Japan commits to aiding Philippines in decarbonization and energy initiatives, says PM Kishida

In a resolute statement, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has reaffirmed Japan’s dedication to supporting the Philippines in its efforts to decarbonize and achieve a “Net Zero” goal.

During his address before a special joint session of the Philippine Congress on Saturday, Prime Minister Kishida emphasized Tokyo’s unwavering commitment to fostering the economic and social advancement of the country, aligning with the Marcos administration’s “Build Better More” program.

Prime Minister Kishida remarked, “Japan is among the Philippines’ largest private-sector investors. We are actively engaged in public-private partnerships and investments in companies contributing to decarbonization.”

Furthermore, he underscored Japan’s intention to foster cooperation among Asian nations regarding environmental initiatives. “With a shared commitment to addressing climate change, an issue highly regarded by the Marcos administration, we are deepening collaboration in the realm of energy transition, embodied by the ‘Asia Zero Emissions Community (AZEC)’ concept,” Kishida stated.

“We are planning to convene an AZEC summit meeting and will collaborate with participating countries to collectively pursue the ‘Net Zero’ objective, using diverse pathways for energy transitions tailored to each country’s unique circumstances,” he added.

In his address, Prime Minister Kishida also emphasized the long-standing relationship between Manila and Tokyo, emphasizing their bilateral ties that have persevered through challenging times. “Over the past half-century, exchanges between our two nations have deepened, and today, the partnership between Japan and the Philippines is stronger than ever,” he noted.

Kishida expressed his hope to collaborate with President Marcos and other ASEAN leaders to ensure that the enduring “golden friendship” between Japan and ASEAN evolves into a “golden opportunity” that paves the way for the next generation.

Prime Minister Kishida’s visit to Manila, which began on Friday, marks a two-day official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between Japan and the Philippines.

DFA: 134 Pilipino pinayagang lumabas sa Gaza

MAYNILA.

Israeli strikes kill civilians at Gaza shelters, Blinken seeks aid amid escalating conflict

0

RAFAH, Gaza Strip. Israeli military strikes have claimed multiple civilian lives on Saturday in the main combat zone of the Gaza Strip, with attacks targeting a U.N. shelter and a hospital, escalating the assault on the besieged enclave’s Hamas rulers. This intensification of the conflict has led to a growing international outcry over the rising death toll and deepening humanitarian crisis.

The Israeli military announced that it had encircled Gaza City, the primary target of its offensive to dismantle Hamas. However, they provided a three-hour window on Saturday for residents trapped by the fighting to flee south.

The latest attacks coincided with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to the region, where he aimed to find ways to alleviate the suffering of civilians caught in the crossfire. Blinken held discussions with Arab foreign ministers in Jordan, following talks in Israel with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Netanyahu reiterated that there could be no temporary cease-fire until all hostages held by Hamas are released.

Egyptian officials, along with Qatar, have proposed humanitarian pauses lasting six to 12 hours daily to allow aid in and evacuate casualties. They also suggested that Israel release some women and elderly prisoners in exchange for hostages held by Hamas. These suggestions, however, appear unlikely to be accepted by Israel. The officials spoke anonymously due to a lack of authorization to brief the press on the discussions.

The Israeli military has repeatedly called for the 1.1 million residents of northern Gaza to move south as they escalate their bombardment in the north and tighten the noose around Gaza City. Nonetheless, some individuals traveling south have been killed during their journey in recent days, and Israel continues to conduct airstrikes in the southern part of the territory, justifying them as targeting Hamas objectives.

With significant portions of residential neighborhoods destroyed by airstrikes, most of the approximately 300,000 remaining residents in northern Gaza have sought shelter in U.N.-run schools and hospitals, hoping for safety. Tragically, Israeli strikes have repeatedly hit and damaged these shelters.

On Saturday, two strikes hit a U.N. school-turned-shelter just north of Gaza City, resulting in several casualties in tents in the schoolyard and among women inside the building. The U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees initially reported 20 casualties, but this figure remains unverified.

The Health Ministry in Gaza, under Hamas control, reported that 15 individuals were killed at the school where thousands had sought shelter, with an additional 70 wounded.

Two individuals were also killed in a strike near the gate of Nasser Hospital in Gaza City, according to Medhat Abbas, a Health Ministry spokesperson.

Around 1.5 million people in Gaza, approximately 70% of the population, have been displaced from their homes, further exacerbating the dire humanitarian situation.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urgently called for an immediate cease-fire to facilitate the delivery of aid into Gaza. He described the humanitarian situation as “horrific,” emphasizing the trauma experienced by the entire population in Gaza and the lack of safe havens.

Guterres acknowledged the previous civilian casualties resulting from Hamas’ attack on Israel but emphasized the importance of protecting civilians and civilian infrastructure. He also called on Hamas to release all the hostages it holds, numbering approximately 240.

The family home of Hamas’ exiled leader, Ismail Haniyeh, located in the Shati refugee camp on the northern edge of Gaza City, was struck by an airstrike on Saturday morning. The extent of damage and casualties remains unknown.

Overnight airstrikes also targeted the western outskirts of Gaza City and the vicinity of Al-Quds Hospital. Another strike hit a building near the entrance of the hospital’s emergency ward on Saturday afternoon, injuring at least 21 people, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent.

Despite Israel’s call for civilians to flee south, strikes have persisted in the southern areas as well. Civilians continue to endure the relentless sound of explosions.

In the southern town of Khan Younis, a family home was destroyed by an airstrike early Saturday, resulting in casualties, including a child.

The Israeli military confirmed that ground forces are now operating in the south, with an armored and engineering corps working to remove booby traps from buildings. During this operation, Israeli troops killed fighters seen exiting a tunnel. The military also reported numerous attacks launched from tunnels on Israeli forces in northern Gaza.

On the northern border of Israel, skirmishes continued on Saturday, with the Israeli military reporting strikes on militant cells in Lebanon attempting to target Israel, as well as an observation post associated with Hezbollah.

Throughout the conflict, Israel and Hezbollah, an ally of Hamas, have engaged in almost daily exchanges of fire along the Lebanese border, raising concerns of a potential new front opening there.

Ayon kay Marcos, “I am very happy to have been able to announced the new appointment of one of the most important departments in our government at ito parang, isinama na natin na ang pagtingin natin sa private sector ay partner sa lahat ng mga ating gagawin,”

Israel assures repatriation of Filipinos in Gaza by Saturday, some Filipinos hesitant to leave

In a significant development, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has announced that the Israeli government has provided assurances that Filipinos currently in Gaza will be allowed to return home by Saturday, at the latest. This development follows the ongoing conflict in the region, and it is seen as a step towards facilitating the safe return of Filipinos trapped in the volatile Gaza Strip.

During a press briefing, President Marcos stated, “May pangako sila sa atin na ma-ipapalabas na ang mga Pilipino. That is what they promised us – Saturday at the latest.” This commitment from the Israeli government comes as a relief to the affected Filipinos and their families.

President Marcos further highlighted that the Philippine Embassy in Cairo, Egypt, is fully prepared to assist in transporting the Filipinos trapped in Gaza through the Rafah border crossing. “Nandon lang sila, matagal lang silang nag aantay doon sa tawiran sa Rafah crossing and they’re ready for when the time comes na tumawid na ang mga Pinoy,” he mentioned.

However, despite the assurance from the Israeli government, there are still challenges to be addressed. According to Philippine Ambassador to Jordan, Wilfredo Santos, Filipinos have not yet been included in the list of individuals permitted to leave Gaza for Egypt. He stated, “We are not yet on the list of foreigners and dual nationals who are given permission to exit Gaza to Egypt.” Santos expressed hope that Filipino nationals will soon receive the necessary clearance to leave Gaza.

Santos further explained that the list of individuals allowed to leave Gaza is updated daily, and it currently only covers the third day since Egypt began accepting foreigners and dual nationals leaving the Palestinian enclave. “There are 7,000 of such nationals, and Egypt processes only between 500 to 600 a day, so it may take 2 weeks to complete the process,” Santos added. This highlights the scale of the logistical operation required to facilitate the safe passage of individuals from Gaza to Egypt.

The Philippines’ embassy in Amman has jurisdiction over Filipinos in Gaza, and they continue to coordinate efforts to ensure the safe repatriation of their citizens. As of now, there are a total of 115 Filipinos who are eagerly awaiting the green light to cross the border, as confirmed by Department of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Teresita Daza.

However, President Marcos acknowledged that some Filipinos, particularly women married to Palestinians, are hesitant to leave their families behind. This dilemma underscores the complex and emotional decisions that some individuals are faced with during such challenging times.

In total, there are 136 Filipinos accounted for in Gaza, and according to Daza, 19 of them remain undecided about their repatriation. This includes a Filipino nun who finds herself in a difficult situation, torn between her calling and the need for personal safety.

In the midst of the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, the Filipino government has been actively engaged in repatriating its citizens from the region. So far, 123 Filipinos from Israel have been successfully repatriated to ensure their safety and well-being during this challenging period.

As the situation in Gaza continues to evolve, the commitment from the Israeli government to allow Filipinos to return home offers hope to those affected. However, the challenges associated with the logistical process of repatriation, as well as the personal decisions faced by some Filipinos, highlight the complexity of the situation and the need for ongoing support and coordination to ensure the safety and well-being of all those involved.

FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried convicted of $10 Billion cryptocurrency fraud

NEW YORK. Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of FTX, has been found guilty of committing cryptocurrency fraud by a New York jury. Bankman-Fried was convicted of stealing over $10 billion from customers and investors, marking a significant fall from grace in the cryptocurrency industry.

The month-long trial concluded with Bankman-Fried’s claims of innocence being rejected by the jury. He faced charges related to wire fraud, wire fraud conspiracy, and other conspiracy charges, which collectively carry a maximum penalty of 110 years in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for March 28.

Bankman-Fried’s defense attorney, Mark Cohen, expressed disappointment with the verdict, stating that Bankman-Fried maintains his innocence and will continue to fight the charges.

U.S. Attorney Damian Williams described Bankman-Fried’s actions as “one of the biggest financial frauds in American history.” He emphasized the seriousness of cryptocurrency-related fraud and the need for accountability.

The trial highlighted the rise and fall of a prominent figure in the cryptocurrency world and drew parallels to the 2009 prosecution of Bernard Madoff, who was involved in a massive Ponzi scheme.

Prosecutors emphasized Bankman-Fried’s extravagant lifestyle and his attempts to gain influence and power through investments, political contributions, and high-profile endorsements. Witnesses, including Bankman-Fried’s former colleagues, testified to his involvement in siphoning billions of dollars from customer accounts.

Bankman-Fried’s arrest and extradition to the United States drew significant attention to the case, ultimately leading to his conviction for fraud.

Israeli forces encircle Gaza City as conflict continues

0

GAZA/JERUSALEM. Israeli forces have encircled Gaza City, the main city in the Gaza Strip, in their ongoing offensive against Hamas, according to Israeli military statements. Hamas, however, is using hit-and-run tactics from underground tunnels to resist the Israeli advance.

Israel has focused its attack on Gaza City, located in the north of the Gaza Strip, with the aim of dismantling the command structure of the Islamist group and urging civilians to move to the south.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated, “We’re at the height of the battle. We’ve had impressive successes and have passed the outskirts of Gaza City. We are advancing,” but provided no further details.

Israeli military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari confirmed the encirclement of Gaza City, which is seen as the focal point of Hamas’ activities. Israeli forces are encountering mines and booby traps as they advance.

Hamas’ armed wing’s spokesperson, Abu Ubaida, claimed in a televised speech that Israel’s death toll in Gaza is higher than what the military has reported, warning, “Your soldiers will return in black bags.”

The conflict has taken a heavy toll on Palestinian civilians, leading to shortages of food, fuel, drinking water, and medicine. The White House is exploring options for temporary pauses in the conflict to allow for safe evacuations from Gaza and humanitarian aid deliveries.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is on a visit to the Middle East to discuss measures to minimize harm to Gaza’s civilians and address the future of Gaza, with a focus on laying the groundwork for future Palestinian statehood.

The latest conflict began when Hamas fighters breached the border on Oct. 7, leading to a series of events that have resulted in significant casualties and damage. The situation continues to escalate, drawing international concern.

In Washington, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a Republican proposal to provide $14.3 billion in aid to Israel, despite objections from Democrats and a potential White House veto. The U.S. government is considering a broader emergency spending package, including funding for Israel, humanitarian aid, and other priorities.

The situation in Gaza remains dire, with many hospitals unable to function properly, and the overall humanitarian situation described as catastrophic. The conflict shows no signs of immediate resolution, leaving civilians in a state of distress and uncertainty.
