Israel to allow limited aid delivery to Gaza amid hospital blast fallout

0

KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip. Israel announced on Wednesday that it will permit Egypt to deliver restricted amounts of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, marking a slight easing of the 10-day blockade on the region. This development follows a massive explosion at a Gaza City hospital that claimed hundreds of lives the day before, as Palestinians faced mounting desperation with dwindling food and water supplies.

The decision, which allows food, water, and medicine deliveries to civilians in the southern Gaza Strip while excluding Hamas militants, was made after a request from visiting U.S. President Joe Biden, according to a statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office. Notably, there was no mention of the much-needed fuel supply.

The timeline for aid delivery remains unclear, as truckloads of aid at the Rafah crossing, Gaza’s sole connection to Egypt, have been waiting for days. However, the crossing’s capacity has been limited, and it has reportedly been damaged by Israeli airstrikes.

Israel’s announcement came as anger over the hospital blast on Tuesday night at al-Ahli Hospital spread across the Middle East. This development coincided with President Biden’s visit to Israel, where he aimed to prevent a wider conflict in the region, which began when Hamas militants initiated a rampage across communities in southern Israel on October 7.

There were conflicting claims regarding the responsibility for the explosion. Hamas officials in Gaza quickly attributed it to an Israeli airstrike, reporting nearly 500 casualties. In contrast, Israel denied involvement and presented evidence indicating that the blast was the result of a rocket misfire by Islamic Jihad, another militant group in Gaza. Islamic Jihad disputed this claim.

The Associated Press has not independently verified any of the claims or evidence provided by the involved parties.

Upon his arrival, President Biden embraced Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and expressed concern for the suffering of Gaza’s civilians. He later stated that the hospital blast appeared not to be Israel’s fault, based on the information available.

Palestinian rocket attacks on Israel resumed shortly before Biden’s arrival, following a 12-hour lull. Israeli airstrikes on Gaza continued, even targeting cities in southern Gaza that Israel had designated as “safe zones” for Palestinian civilians.

After the hospital blast, Jordan canceled a meeting between Biden, Jordan’s King Abdullah II, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi. As a result, President Biden visited only Israel.

The ongoing war between Israel and Hamas was described as “pushing the region to the brink” by Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi. The Israeli military held a briefing to present its case for not being responsible for the al-Ahli Hospital explosion, emphasizing that it was not firing in the area when the incident occurred.

The situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, with thousands of casualties, massive displacement, and humanitarian needs reaching critical levels.

131 Pinoy, umaasang makakatawid ng Egypt mula Gaza

0

Martin Scorsese continues to explore and marvel at the world of cinema

NEW YORK. The legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese has found himself reflecting on a moment from the past. It’s a memory of when the revered Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa received an honorary Academy Award in 1990. During his brief and humble acceptance speech, Kurosawa, then 80 years old, confessed that he hadn’t fully grasped the essence of cinema. At the time, this struck Scorsese as an intriguing statement from a master filmmaker, but it wasn’t until Scorsese himself turned 80 that he began to truly appreciate Kurosawa’s words.

In a recent interview, Scorsese revealed, “I’ve lived long enough to be his age, and I think I understand now. Because there is no limit. The limit is in yourself. These are just tools, the lights and the camera and that stuff. How much further can you explore who you are?”

Scorsese’s lifelong exploration of the art of cinema has grown even more profound and introspective with time. In recent years, his films have expanded in scale and ambition as he delved into themes of faith (“Silence”) and loss (“The Irishman”). His latest work, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” is an audacious endeavor, depicting the systematic killing of Osage Nation members for their oil-rich land in the 1920s. While it’s a departure from Scorsese’s usual gangster films, it weaves themes of trust and betrayal into American history.

“Killers of the Flower Moon,” produced by Apple with a budget of $200 million, represents a significant undertaking by Scorsese to continue his ambitious and personal filmmaking on a grand scale, which is increasingly rare in today’s film landscape.

Scorsese regards “Killers of the Flower Moon” as “an internal spectacle” and a departure from his previous Western films. Through consultations with the Osage Nation, the film aims to authentically depict their history, culture, and language.

For Scorsese, the COVID-19 pandemic provided a period of reflection and reevaluation, allowing him to reconsider his filmmaking choices. He emphasized the meditative process of preparing for a film and highlighted his preference for reading over handling emails.

As a staunch advocate for the art of cinema, Scorsese continues his mission to preserve and celebrate the medium. While he acknowledges the evolving landscape of visual storytelling, he remains unwavering in his belief that cinema can enrich lives and is an art form worth preserving for future generations.

Though time may be running out for Scorsese, he maintains an unquenchable curiosity and astonishment about the possibilities of cinema. His enduring passion for film and storytelling continues to drive his creative exploration.

Have a nice day. Happy April Fullz kahit October palang! Fix your Website.”

Tragedy strikes Gaza hospital as Biden heads to the Middle East: Hamas and Israel blame each other

0

KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip. A catastrophic explosion shook a Gaza City hospital, which was crowded with wounded Palestinians seeking refuge, claiming the lives of hundreds of people, as reported by the Hamas-run Health Ministry on Tuesday. Hamas attributed the incident to an Israeli airstrike, while the Israeli military insisted that the hospital was struck by a rocket misfired by Palestinian militants.

The Gaza Health Ministry confirmed that at least 500 individuals were killed in the blast. Video footage, authenticated by The Associated Press, depicted the hospital building engulfed in flames, with the hospital premises littered with the bodies of victims, including many young children. Nearby lay blankets, school backpacks, and personal belongings.

The incident sparked outrage across the region, occurring just one day before President Joe Biden’s scheduled visit to demonstrate support for Israel and endeavor to avert the expansion of the ongoing conflict. This tragedy unfolded amidst U.S. efforts to persuade Israel to allow the delivery of essential supplies to the beleaguered civilians, humanitarian groups, and hospitals in the besieged Gaza Strip, which has been under complete siege since Hamas initiated a deadly incursion into southern Israel last week.

Hamas denounced the hospital blast on Tuesday as a “horrific massacre” and squarely placed the blame on an Israeli airstrike. Meanwhile, the Israeli military accused Islamic Jihad, a smaller, more radical Palestinian militant group with close ties to Hamas, of firing a rocket barrage near the hospital at the time, pointing to “intelligence from multiple sources” indicating their responsibility for the rocket that struck the hospital.

Hundreds of Palestinians had sought refuge in al-Ahli Hospital and other medical facilities in Gaza City in recent days, hoping to escape bombardment after Israel issued an evacuation order for all residents of the city and surrounding areas to relocate to the southern Gaza Strip.

Ambulances and private cars transported approximately 350 casualties from the al-Ahli Hospital to Gaza City’s primary hospital, al-Shifa, which was already overwhelmed with victims from previous attacks. Mohammed Abu Selmia, the director of al-Shifa Hospital, described the dire situation: “We are squeezing five beds into a single tiny room. We need equipment, we need medicine, we need beds, we need anesthesia, we need everything.” He also warned that the hospital’s generators would run out of fuel by the next day, potentially causing the collapse of Gaza’s healthcare system.

Before the al-Alhi Hospital tragedy, Israeli airstrikes in Gaza had already claimed the lives of at least 2,778 individuals and injured 9,700, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, with nearly two-thirds of the casualties being children. Another 1,200 people across Gaza were believed to be buried under rubble, either alive or deceased, according to health authorities.

The recent attack by Hamas on southern Israel on October 7th resulted in the deaths of over 1,400 people, mostly civilians, and led to the capture of around 200 individuals who were taken into Gaza. Since then, Hamas militants in Gaza have launched daily rocket attacks targeting cities across Israel.

In response to the alleged airstrike, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas canceled his participation in a summit with President Biden, Jordan’s King Abdullah II, and Egypt’s president, which had been scheduled for Wednesday in Amman, Jordan, to discuss the ongoing conflict. Jordan’s foreign minister subsequently announced the cancellation of the summit, citing the escalating conflict between Israel and Hamas as a cause for concern.

As President Biden embarked on his trip to the Middle East, he faces the challenge of preventing the conflict from escalating into a broader regional conflict. On Tuesday, violence flared along Israel’s border with Lebanon, where Iranian-backed Hezbollah militants are active, and Israel has evacuated nearby towns. Military spokesman Lt. Col. Richard Hecht stated, “We are preparing for the next stages of war…Everybody’s talking about a ground offensive. It might be something different.”

Throughout the day on Tuesday, airstrikes claimed the lives of numerous civilians and at least one senior Hamas figure in the southern half of the Gaza Strip, the area where Israeli authorities advised fleeing Palestinians to relocate. An Associated Press reporter witnessed around 50 bodies being brought to Nasser Hospital following strikes in the southern city of Khan Younis.

In Deir al Balah, an airstrike reduced a house to rubble, resulting in the deaths of a man and 11 women and children inside, as well as casualties in a neighboring house. Witnesses reported no warning before the strike.

Israeli tank shelling struck a U.N. school in central Gaza where 4,000 Palestinians had sought refuge, leading to six fatalities and numerous injuries, according to the United Nations Palestinian refugee agency. At least 24 U.N. installations were hit in the past week, resulting in the deaths of at least 14 agency staff members. The Israeli military justified its actions by claiming to target Hamas hideouts, infrastructure, and command centers.

A series of strikes devastated the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza, demolishing an entire block of homes and causing numerous casualties among the families residing there. Among those killed was Ayman Nofal, one of Hamas’ top military commanders, making him the highest-profile militant known to have been killed thus far in the conflict. Nofal had been responsible for coordinating Hamas militant activities in the central Gaza Strip.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu placed the blame on Hamas for Israel’s retaliatory attacks and the mounting civilian casualties in Gaza. He accused Hamas of “targeting and murdering civilians with unprecedented savagery” and “hiding behind civilians.”

In Gaza City, Israeli airstrikes also targeted the residence of Hamas’ top political official, Ismail Haniyeh, resulting in the deaths of at least 14 people. Haniyeh resides in Doha, Qatar, but his family lives in Gaza City. The Hamas media office had not yet identified the individuals killed in the strike.

Given Israel’s refusal to allow the entry of water, fuel, and food into Gaza since Hamas’ attack, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken secured an agreement with Prime Minister Netanyahu to explore the establishment of a mechanism for delivering aid to the territory’s 2.3 million inhabitants. U.S. officials emphasized the significance of this step, despite it appearing modest.

As of late Tuesday, however, no deal had been finalized. A senior Israeli official stated that his country was demanding assurances that Hamas militants would not seize aid deliveries, and entry of aid was also contingent on the release of hostages held by Hamas.

Over 1 million Palestinians have been displaced from their homes, approximately half of Gaza’s population. Sixty percent of these displaced individuals now reside in the approximately 14-kilometer-long area south of the evacuation zone, as reported by the U.N. agency for Palestinians. Aid workers have warned that Gaza is on the verge of a complete collapse, with hospitals at risk of losing electricity and hundreds of thousands of people desperately seeking bread and water.

The U.N. agency also noted that over 400,000 displaced people are currently crowded into schools and other facilities in the south, with limited access to food and water. Israel opened a water supply line into the south for just three hours, benefiting only 14% of Gaza’s population, according to the U.N.

At the Rafah crossing, Gaza’s sole connection to Egypt, truckloads of aid were waiting to enter. The World Food Program revealed that it had more than 300 tons of food ready to be delivered to Gaza. Additionally, civilians with foreign citizenship, many of them Palestinians with dual nationalities, waited at Rafah, hoping to exit the conflict-stricken region.

Groundbreaking study shows Mounjaro diabetes drug facilitates 60-pound weight loss for dieters

The medicine in the diabetes drug Mounjaro helped people with obesity or who are overweight lose at least a quarter of their body weight, or about 60 pounds on average, when combined with intensive diet and exercise, a new study shows.

By comparison, a group of people who also dieted and exercised, but then received dummy shots, lost weight initially but then regained some, researchers reported Sunday in the journal Nature Medicine.

“This study says that if you lose weight before you start the drug, you can then add a lot more weight loss after,” said Dr. Thomas Wadden, a University of Pennsylvania obesity researcher and psychology professor who led the study.

The results, which were also presented Sunday at a medical conference, confirm that the drug made by Eli Lilly & Co. has the potential to be one of the most powerful medical treatments for obesity to date, outside experts said.

“Any way you slice it, it’s a quarter of your total body weight,” said Dr. Caroline Apovian, who treats obesity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and wasn’t involved in the study.

The injected drug, tirzepatide, was approved in the U.S. in May 2022 to treat diabetes. Sold as Mounjaro, it has been used “off-label” to treat obesity, joining a frenzy of demand for diabetes and weight-loss medications including Ozempic and Wegovy, made by Novo Nordisk.

All the drugs, which carry retail price tags of $900 a month or more, have been in shortage for months.

Tirzepatide targets two hormones that kick in after people eat to regulate appetite and the feeling of fullness communicated between the gut and the brain. Semaglutide, the drug used in Ozempic and Wegovy, targets one of those hormones.

The new study, which was funded by Eli Lilly, enrolled about 800 people who had obesity or were overweight with a weight-related health complication — but not diabetes. On average, study participants weighed about 241 pounds (109.5 kilograms) to start and had a body-mass index — a common measure of obesity — of about 38.

After three months of intensive diet and exercise, more than 200 participants left the trial, either because they failed to lose enough weight or for other reasons. The remaining nearly 600 people were randomized to receive tirzepatide or a placebo via weekly injections for about 16 months. Nearly 500 people completed the study.

Participants in both groups lost about 7% of their body weight, or almost 17 pounds (8 kilograms), during the diet-and-exercise phase. Those who received the drug went on to lose an additional 18.4% of initial body weight, or about 44 pounds (20 kilograms) more, on average. Those who received the dummy shots regained about 2.5% of their initial weight, or 6 pounds (2.7 kilograms).

Overall, about 88% of those taking tirzepatide lost 5% or more of their body weight during the trial, compared with almost 17% of those taking placebo. Nearly 29% of those taking the drug lost at least a quarter of their body weight, compared with just over 1% of those taking placebo.

That’s higher than the results for semaglutide and similar to the results seen with bariatric surgery, said Apovian.

“We’re doing a medical gastric bypass,” she said.

Side effects including nausea, diarrhea and constipation were reported more frequently in people taking the drug than those taking the placebo. They were mostly mild to moderate and occurred primarily as the dose of the drug was escalated, the study found. More than 10% of those taking the drug discontinued the study because of side effects, compared with about 2% of those on placebo.

Lilly is expected to publish the results soon of another study that the firm says shows similar high rates of weight loss. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted the company a fast-track review of the drug to treat obesity, which Eli Lilly may sell under a different brand name. A decision is expected by the end of the year.

Bangkay ng babaeng hubad, P8M halaga ng shabu natagpuan

0

TANZA, Cavite.
