“I think the question is whether will it spread. And that’s another matter because if it gets into the supply chain, affecting global movements of trade, the effects can even be more substantial,” ayon kay Balisacan sa isang briefing sa Malakanyang noong Biyernes.

“As of this date, we don’t see a major impact in the economy… There’s hardly any impact,” dagdag pa ng opisyal.

Israeli strike damages Aleppo Airport for the second time in a week, Syrian officials report

0

Aleppo airport in Syria has reportedly suffered an Israeli air strike for the second time in a week, according to Syrian authorities.

The attack, said to be carried out from the direction of the Mediterranean Sea, west of Latakia, targeted Aleppo International Airport and caused significant material damage, rendering the airport out of service, the Syrian defense ministry stated, as reported by Reuters news agency.

Remarkably, Aleppo airport had only recently returned to service after being hit on the previous Thursday, which Syrian officials also attributed to an Israeli strike. However, there has been no official comment from Israeli authorities regarding these incidents.

The previous Thursday, Syrian state media had reported that Israeli forces launched missile strikes on the country’s two main international airports in Damascus and Aleppo, effectively putting them out of action. Notably, these airports serve not only civil aviation but also host military bases. These bases are believed to be transit points for the transportation of Iranian arms to Hezbollah, a powerful militant group with a presence in both Syria and Lebanon.

Desperate exodus: Gazans flee northern streets ahead of expected Israeli invasion

0

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip. Families in Gaza are facing a desperate situation as they attempt to flee the northern areas ahead of an anticipated Israeli invasion. This mass exodus has seen people leave with limited belongings and has resulted in chaotic scenes in the streets.

Some residents have left with their homes jam-packed with clothes, heirlooms, and photographs, while others have strapped foam mattresses to their cars. The means of transportation range from buses, vans, and cars to donkey-drawn carts.

Many people, however, have chosen to walk, accompanied by exhausted family members, navigating streets filled with rubble. Their primary goal is to seek safety from the ongoing conflict.

An Israeli statement urged residents to evacuate south, emphasizing their own safety and the safety of their families while warning about the imminent operation in northern Gaza. This warning has further stoked fear and chaos in a region already beleaguered by relentless Israeli airstrikes following Hamas’s attack.

Within just 12 hours of the initial Israeli warnings, hundreds of thousands of people had either taken to the roads or were forcibly displaced by airstrikes. Nonetheless, some Gazans have opted to remain in the north, citing concerns about the safety of southern areas and the perils of using the roads designated as evacuation routes, which have also been targeted by Israeli airstrikes.

Desperate for safety, some Gazans have sought refuge in locations they hope will not become Israeli targets. Approximately 35,000 people have gathered on the grounds of Gaza City’s main hospital, seeking shelter.

The scale of the evacuation order is enormous, affecting an area with 1.1 million residents, nearly half of the territory’s population. The United Nations and aid workers have raised alarms about the potentially catastrophic consequences of this mass exodus.

Social media has been inundated with pleas for assistance from those seeking refuge. People have reached out for transportation options and support, highlighting the dire situation they are facing.

This harrowing situation has evoked painful memories of historical displacements for many Gazans. Stories of the 1948 Nakba, the mass Palestinian displacement during Israel’s founding, have fueled suspicions about the prospects of Gazans returning to their homes.

The personal toll of this conflict is evident in the story of Haifa Khamis al-Shurafa and her family, who are experiencing displacement for the second time in a week. As they leave, they carry their most important possessions in two suitcases, while Haifa’s 82-year-old father, who witnessed the 1948 events as a child, reflects on the recurring history.

For many residents, leaving behind their homes and memories is an excruciating experience. They find themselves in situations of anguish, humiliation, and injustice, grappling with feelings of abandonment. As they navigate this challenging path, they face uncertainty and despair, unsure of what the future holds.

Gazans grapple with heartbreaking dilemma: Shelter from airstrikes at home or flee under airstrikes?

0

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip. Naji Jamal, a 34-year-old health clinic worker in the Jabaliya refugee camp in northern Gaza, faced a heart-wrenching dilemma as the Israeli army’s ultimatum loomed. Should he heed the call to evacuate and risk homelessness in Gaza’s south, or stay in his building, now designated a target zone, amid the threat of an Israeli ground invasion?

“It’s an existential question, but there is no answer,” Jamal lamented. “There is no safe haven, there is no place that is not being shelled and besieged, there is no place to go.”

The Israeli military gave Jamal and 1.1 million other Palestinians in northern Gaza and Gaza City 24 hours to decide in an unprecedented order. It came as a response to Hamas’ brutal attack that killed over 1,300 Israelis, sending shockwaves across the country.

As the deadline approached, hundreds of thousands of Israeli army reservists gathered near Gaza’s northern border, while Israeli warplanes intensified their airstrikes on homes and residential high-rises. Aid groups called on the international community to prevent what they saw as a potential war crime involving forced population transfer.

In under-resourced and overwhelmed hospitals, Palestinian doctors had no choice but to stay. Evacuating Gaza’s largest hospital, Shifa, was impossible, given the dire conditions and the hospital’s inability to accommodate the 600 patients, many in critical condition.

The Israeli military claims its airstrikes target militant infrastructure, not civilians, a claim rejected by Palestinians. Many fled south, enduring harrowing journeys amidst the bombardment. Tractors, horse carts, and donkeys formed a line stretching 30 kilometers, turning a 45-minute trip into a deadly two-hour odyssey.

Israeli airstrikes on evacuating vehicles reportedly killed at least 70 people, according to Hamas. Despite mistrust, some, like Ali Abdul Bari, evacuated to ensure their family’s safety.

Others hesitated, recalling past Palestinian refugee crises, including the Nakba in 1948, when hundreds of thousands were displaced. Gaza’s Hamas leaders also discouraged flight, calling the Israeli order “psychological warfare.”

For some, the means to leave were lacking, like Jamal, who lacked a car. Piling family members onto a horse cart through a war zone was too daunting.

In the face of uncertain odds, Palestinians in Gaza grappled with an impossible decision, shaped by their history and their resolve to endure.

Microsoft completes $69 billion acquisition of Call of Duty maker Activision Blizzard following antitrust battles

Microsoft has successfully concluded its acquisition of the renowned video game-maker, Activision Blizzard, in a $69 billion deal, marking one of the most expensive tech acquisitions in history. This acquisition is set to have significant ramifications for the video game industry.

The announcement of the deal’s completion came seven hours after Microsoft received final approval from the UK’s competition watchdog. This reversal of its earlier decision to block the merger removed the last obstacle for the transaction.

With this acquisition, Microsoft gains control over the studios behind popular titles like Call of Duty, Diablo, and Overwatch, providing a significant boost to its Xbox gaming console, which currently ranks third in sales, trailing behind Sony’s PlayStation and Nintendo. Microsoft also has grander ambitions to integrate Activision’s titles into its multi-game subscription service, akin to a Netflix for video games.

The nearly 22 months taken to finalize this deal underscored concerns raised by rivals and government regulators who feared that Microsoft could utilize its growing collection of games to stifle competition. This acquisition forms part of a broader trend of industry consolidation, raising concerns among independent game developers who fear being marginalized as the industry focuses its resources on blockbuster franchises with a proven track record of success.

Despite the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority’s blessing, which was expected after preliminary approval was granted last month, Microsoft will sell European cloud streaming rights for all current and new Activision games released over the next 15 years to French game studio Ubisoft Entertainment.

The deal’s strongest resistance came from British and American regulators, and Sony expressed concerns that it could restrict PlayStation gamers’ access to Call of Duty. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) remains in opposition, arguing that this merger could create “walled gardens” around Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass subscription service and the emerging business of on-demand game streaming. Although the FTC lost a court battle seeking to pause the merger, they continue to pursue legal action.

Microsoft, however, has maintained that the acquisition is beneficial for the gaming industry, emphasizing its goal to make Activision’s games more widely accessible across various platforms, regardless of the preferred gaming console.

The completion of this colossal deal positions Microsoft as a major player in the gaming industry, with significant influence over its future. While Sony’s PlayStation maintains its industry leadership, Microsoft’s strategic acquisitions, such as ZeniMax Media and Bethesda Softworks, have bolstered its game catalog and appeal to gamers.

The acquisition of Activision Blizzard reflects Microsoft’s determination to compete with rivals and shape the future of the gaming industry. The repercussions of this deal will undoubtedly reverberate throughout the world of video games.

Israeli embassy employee stabbed in Beijing; foreign suspect detained

0

BEIJING. A 50-year-old Israeli man employed at the Israeli Embassy in Beijing was attacked on Friday in front of a supermarket, Chinese police and the Israeli government reported. Beijing police promptly arrested a 53-year-old foreign suspect. The victim, identified as a family member of an Israeli diplomat, was assaulted without an apparent motive, and it remains unclear if the incident is connected to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

An Israeli government statement confirmed the victim’s stable condition after being transferred to the hospital but did not provide further details.

Video footage circulated on social media depicted the assailant wielding a knife and repeatedly stabbing the victim, leaving bloodstains on the sidewalk. Witnesses in the area reported hearing the victim’s cries as police cars and an ambulance arrived. A police cordon was established, and the bloodstains were later cleaned.

The attack took place as Muslims worldwide held large protests following Friday prayers in response to Israel’s intensive bombing campaign in Gaza, triggered by Hamas’s incursion into southern Israel the previous Saturday.

In addition to the stabbing incident, Israel criticized China’s response to the initial Hamas attack, expressing deep disappointment. Israel’s Foreign Ministry conveyed this sentiment to China’s Middle East envoy, Zhai Jun, stating that China’s statements lacked a clear and unequivocal condemnation of the actions by Hamas against innocent civilians.

China responded by affirming its opposition to acts that harm civilians and violate international law, emphasizing its commitment to de-escalation efforts and a resumption of peace talks. China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced that a Mideast envoy from China would travel to the region soon to work on a ceasefire and de-escalation.

China has been supportive of the Palestinian demand for an independent state while acknowledging Israel’s right to exist. Beijing has assigned blame for regional tensions on the United States, a key ally of Israel.

In Beijing, security was heightened around the Israeli Embassy, with both plainclothes and uniformed police officers present. Antisemitic comments surged on Chinese social media platforms since the outbreak of the conflict, leading the Israeli Embassy in Beijing to filter comments on its Chinese social media account.

Meanwhile, the United States has shown strong support for Israel during the ongoing conflict, deploying senior officials and additional military aid while also engaging in diplomatic efforts to address the crisis. U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer voiced dissatisfaction with China’s initial response to the conflict but welcomed a subsequent statement expressing deep sadness over civilian casualties and condemnation of acts harming civilians.
