India achieves historic lunar milestone with South Pole spacecraft landing

NEW DELHI. India has achieved a monumental feat by becoming the first country to successfully land a spacecraft near the moon’s south pole. The remarkable endeavor, undertaken by the world’s most populous nation, could potentially unlock reserves of frozen water in unexplored lunar regions, marking a significant scientific and technological triumph.

Following a previous unsuccessful lunar landing attempt in 2019, India now joins an exclusive group that includes the United States, the Soviet Union, and China as only the fourth nation to accomplish this milestone. A lander carrying a rover successfully touched down on the lunar surface at 6:04 p.m. local time, eliciting jubilant celebrations across the country. The achievement underlines India’s rising prowess as a technological powerhouse, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of projecting India’s ascendance onto the global stage.

Addressing the achievement from South Africa, where he was participating in the BRICS summit, Prime Minister Modi proudly declared, “India is now on the moon. India has reached the south pole of the moon — no other country has achieved that. We are witnessing history.”

The lunar rover is set to disembark from the lander within hours or a day, engaging in experiments, including analyzing the mineral composition of the lunar surface. The mission, launched over a month ago at an estimated cost of $75 million, is anticipated to last for another two weeks. Indian Space Research Organization’s Chairman, S. Somnath, stated that the next objective would involve a manned lunar mission.

This achievement comes at a crucial time for India, which has recently become the world’s fifth-largest economy. The success of this lunar mission could potentially boost Prime Minister Modi’s popularity ahead of an upcoming significant general election.

India’s achievement is highlighted by the recent mishap with Russia’s Luna-25, intended for the same lunar area, which veered into an uncontrollable orbit and crashed. India’s successful landing serves as a beacon of hope, following Russia’s setback, and reinforces India’s growing influence on the global stage.

Global leaders, including NASA Administrator Bill Nelson and European Space Agency’s Director General Josef Aschbacher, acknowledged India’s emergence as a modern space power.

The mission, referred to as Chandrayaan-3, commenced from Sriharikota in southern India on July 14. This lunar exploration aims to study permanently shadowed moon craters, potentially holding frozen water, which could serve as a valuable resource for future space missions.

India’s space program has progressively advanced since the 1960s, launching satellites for itself and other nations. It achieved a major milestone by placing an orbiter around Mars in 2014. India’s collaboration with the United States in planning its first mission to the International Space Station further underscores its growing space capabilities.

Despite challenges and past failures, India’s resolute dedication to space exploration has culminated in a triumphant landing, positioning the nation as a formidable player in the global space arena.

Explosion deliberately downed plane carrying Wagner chief Prigozhin, U.S. intelligence reports

0

WASHINGTON. An initial assessment by U.S. intelligence agencies has concluded that the plane crash which is believed to have claimed the life of Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the Russian mercenary group Wagner, was the result of an intentional explosion. This revelation comes as Russian President Vladimir Putin paid tribute to Prigozhin, who had posed the most significant challenge to Putin’s 23-year rule.

Unnamed U.S. and Western officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the assessment strongly suggests Prigozhin was deliberately targeted. The explosion aligns with a pattern of suppressing critics that has been a consistent feature of Putin’s tenure. The officials refrained from detailing the cause of the explosion, which is widely presumed to have also caused the demise of several of Prigozhin’s top aides, seen as retribution for their mutiny against the Russian leadership.

As details of the intelligence evaluation surfaced, Putin offered condolences to the reported victims’ families and hinted at “serious mistakes” made by Prigozhin. The aircraft, carrying the Wagner company founder and six other passengers, crashed shortly after takeoff from Moscow. The Russian civil aviation authority confirmed 10 fatalities, but official confirmation of Prigozhin’s death is pending.

President Joe Biden commented on the crash, implicating Putin, although he acknowledged the absence of corroborating evidence. “I cannot confirm the facts, but I’m not taken aback,” Biden stated, emphasizing Putin’s pervasive influence over Russian affairs.

The passenger list included Prigozhin second-in-command, an integral member baptized by his war alias, along with Wagner’s logistics head, a fighter wounded in Syria U.S. airstrikes, and possibly a bodyguard. The presence of high-ranking Wagner members on the same flight raised questions about their joint mission to St. Petersburg.

Outside Wagner’s St. Petersburg headquarters, supporters assembled a makeshift memorial adorned with flowers, company flags, and candles. Putin acknowledged Prigozhin’s role in Ukraine, describing him as a complex figure who made both personal and collective contributions.

Numerous opponents critical of Putin have met untimely deaths or mysterious illnesses, fostering expectations of retaliation against Prigozhin, despite promises to pardon him following a June mutiny. Analysts speculated that the incident could be an attempt to dismantle Wagner as an autonomous entity.

The investigation into the crash’s cause is ongoing, leaving unanswered questions about the motive behind the plane’s explosion. The incident adds to a pattern of enigmatic deaths that are often linked to Kremlin involvement, prompting global scrutiny of Russia’s internal dynamics.

Official pronouncement or parody? Misery or memes?

Why does a popular jingle want us to laugh at our problems? Why not, sings Freddie Aguilar. He and many other urban dwellers in the Philippines may have been taught (nagpasalin-salin, with the philosopher unknown to them) a lesson or two by Friedrich Nietzsche, who says it best: “Perhaps I know best why it is man alone who laughs; he alone suffers so deeply that he had to invent laughter.”

“Laughter is the best medicine” na lang daw kasi hindi nila kilala si Nietzsche. It is not “sad, but true” because we are so happy it is true.

Now is the time to spread your own sarcastic memes, or take time to read or share others’ before losing your freedom to petition our government for redress of grievances (ironically “guaranteed” by the Philippine Constitution of 1935, 1973, and 1987).

Who can beat trolls, anyway? All the lies, fake news, and dis/misinformation already circulated by an army of trolls would be effectively outmaneuvered by the entire armed forces of a country until the same forces would ultimately stop its malicious and criminal operation, but we simply cannot afford that. Is it not because nag-iisa lang si Ninoy? We better check Salingkit: a 1986 Diary by Cyan Abad-Jugo (Anvil Publishing, 2017) in our libraries.

Nag-iisa lang din sa bantay-dagat ang tagapagsalita ng Philippine Coast Guard na si Commodore Jay Tarriela. He posted on Twitter: “If you are a Filipino, whether in government or private sector, regardless of your politics, defending and making excuses for China’s aggressive behavior should deem you unpatriotic, and a traitor to the Philippines and to our people. Given current developments in the West Philippine Sea, it is important to show loyalty to country.” Such a brave commodore! Sapul ang dating nagyayabang-yabangan sa Malacanang.

To the mind of public interest lawyer Joel Ruiz Butuyan, the defeat of the trolls is something we can expect in the future – he did not guess it right eight months before the elections last year – not in the nearest future.

I share the good reflection of our professor, nonetheless: “People vented their anger on social media. In no time, the creative juices that flow in the veins of Filipinos turned expressions of anger and frustration into biting, scorching, yet also comical and amusing, expressions of dissent. An ever growing tide of real people are now creating memes, inventing maxims, and posting hilarious graphics that strip ruling leaders of respectability and instead portray them as bungling clowns and inept shysters. The crude output of trolls has been no match to the imaginative inventions of real people who have been provoked in anger.” (Butuyan, 2021)

“Sobra na, tama na” would not have been so severe had we filled it with sarcasm. Many have tried it these days.

The smiley reactions – in communication studies, we call them paralinguistic digital affordances (PDAs) – proved very retaliatory on the part of Filipinos, including many pro-Marcos supporters, when they heard in the latest state-of-the-nation address (SONA) na nakita raw nilang kayang pababain ang presyo ng bigas, at iba pang pangunahing bilihin.

Pointless suffering prods people to make a point via memes and jokes on social media. With satire supplies, it seems we have no problem after all.

Getting serious

The Digital Revolution that began in the 1980s and the information and communications technology initiatives that go with it must meet our objectives in improving rural health and literacy and related development programs. This is in view of localizing development where the public is communicatively empowered.

Without in any way jeopardizing efforts exerted against abuses done in multiple digital platforms, there should be no alternative to education. That is what we should do first – give the public quality education – with schools, colleges, and universities taking roles in widening access to it, especially to those unreachable via the conventional educational system. The sequential second thing to do is to stretch our minds (and our patience at times), allowing the “initial stages” of ICT products and related digital facilities; patience because internal controls are likely to evolve as well, given that more and more people are using them and are getting used to their technical functions and economic benefits. This means little or no State interference in the administration of some of their features, especially the interconnectedness via social media.

Philippine supply boats successfully break Chinese Coast Guard blockade in contested South China Sea

0

ABOARD BRP CABRA. Amid the presence of a United States Navy aircraft circling overhead, two Philippine boats managed to breach a Chinese coast guard blockade in a risky encounter on Tuesday in the disputed South China Sea. Their mission was to deliver food and essential supplies to Filipino forces stationed at a disputed shoal.

However, the two Philippine coast guard vessels that were escorting the supply boats faced obstruction from at least four Chinese coast guard ships, resulting in a tense five-hour standoff near Second Thomas Shoal.

This perilous incident is the latest episode arising from the long-standing territorial disputes in the busy sea, involving China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Brunei. The area is seen as a potential flashpoint in Asia and has become a sensitive focal point in the broader U.S.-China rivalry.

The Philippine coast guard extended an invitation to a select group of journalists, including two from The Associated Press, to accompany their ships in securing the supply boats. This move was part of a new strategy designed to highlight China’s increasingly aggressive actions in the South China Sea, an area Beijing claims almost entirely.

A Chinese coast guard ship approached as close as 46 meters (50 yards), crossing the path of BRP Cabra to obstruct the Philippine coast guard ship. The latter vessel quickly maneuvered to avoid a collision, as recounted by an unnamed coast guard officer onboard the Cabra due to official policy.

During the standoff, the Cabra and another coast guard ship, the BRP Sindangan, found themselves surrounded by four Chinese coast guard ships and four suspected militia vessels. This compelled them to halt while the remaining two Philippine boats completed the delivery of supplies to the Filipino forces stationed more than 7 kilometers (4 miles) away at Second Thomas Shoal.

Following the successful supply delivery and the replacement of Filipino sailors, all Philippine vessels departed without further incidents from the military outpost established on a stranded Philippine navy ship at the shoal.

“We’re happy that the resupply mission succeeded despite all the dangerous blockings and other actions,” shared Cmdr. Emmanuel Dangate of the Cabra with AP.

Coast Guard spokesperson Commodore Jay Tarriela denounced the Chinese coast guard blockade and other risky maneuvers as violations of international regulations aimed at preventing maritime collisions. He mentioned that the coast guard would submit a report to the Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila, which could potentially lead to a diplomatic protest against China.

The hostilities began on Monday night when a Chinese coast guard ship began trailing the Philippine vessels. On Tuesday morning, both sides asserted their territorial rights through a series of radio exchanges. A man identifying himself as part of the Chinese coast guard ships warned at one point, “To avoid miscalculation, leave and keep out, otherwise, you will bear full responsibility for all the consequences.”

In response to the lack of retreat from the Philippine ships, the Chinese radio caller cautioned that due to the continued “infringement and provocation, we will take countermeasures.”

Chinese coast guard ships repeatedly maneuvered closely past the two Philippine coast guard vessels, with up to three later positioning themselves in front of the Cabra, which remained stationary. The Chinese ships also approached dangerously near the wooden-hulled supply boats. Nevertheless, the smaller vessels managed to navigate through the shallows toward the shoal.

Chinese officials at the embassy in Manila did not provide immediate comments on the incident. The reason behind the deployment of the U.S. Navy surveillance plane, which circled for over three hours while the Chinese ships obstructed and trailed the Philippine vessels near Second Thomas Shoal, remained unclear. When questioned about the deployment of the Navy plane, U.S. Embassy spokesperson Kanishka Gangopadhyay in Manila stated that he could not disclose specifics. He affirmed, “All of our military activities in the Philippines are conducted in full coordination with our Philippine allies.”

Filipino security officials revealed that they have previously received intelligence information and surveillance images from their American and other foreign counterparts, as part of security cooperation, related to the disputed waters.

While the United States does not claim the South China Sea as its territory, it has emphasized the importance of freedom of navigation and flight, along with the peaceful resolution of disputes, for its national interest.

Following an incident on August 5, when a Chinese coast guard ship employed a water cannon against a Philippine supply boat, Washington reiterated its commitment to defend its long-standing treaty ally if Filipino forces, aircraft, and vessels face an armed attack, including in the South China Sea.

Tragic plane crash claims lives, allegedly including mercenary leader Prigozhin

0

Moscow. A plane crash north of Moscow has resulted in the loss of all 10 individuals on board, including Yevgeny Prigozhin, a prominent figure who led a mercenary group known as the Wagner private military company. This incident has raised questions and garnered attention due to Prigozhin’s connection to an armed rebellion against the Russian military earlier this year.

Russia’s civil aviation agency confirmed that the plane crash claimed the lives of all passengers, among them Yevgeny Prigozhin, who had gained notoriety for leading a brief insurrection against Russian military forces. The crash occurred as the aircraft was en route from Moscow to St. Petersburg and went down over 100 kilometers north of Moscow.

Prigozhin’s involvement in the crash has captured global interest as he had been a central figure in the military uprising that sparked tensions between his Wagner group and the Russian government. Following the rebellion, which President Vladimir Putin denounced as an act of treason, charges against Prigozhin were later dropped, allowing him to find refuge in Belarus.

In the wake of the crash, suspicions surrounding Prigozhin’s fate have intensified, especially considering his enigmatic history and the controversies surrounding his actions. Reports indicate that a key general connected to Prigozhin had recently been removed from his position as commander of the Russian air force, adding further intrigue to the situation.

Despite the tragic incident, experts suggest that Prigozhin’s demise might not significantly impact Russia’s ongoing involvement in the conflict in Ukraine. The Wagner group, under his leadership, played a significant role in the Eastern Donetsk region’s battles, capturing the city of Bakhmut after intense clashes. However, Russian officials previously indicated that these forces would potentially rejoin the regular army after the rebellion.

International reactions to the news have varied, with the U.S. National Security Council spokeswoman, Adrienne Watson, expressing a lack of surprise if Prigozhin’s death is confirmed. Nevertheless, some experts advise caution, given Prigozhin’s history of concealing his whereabouts and travels.

As investigations into the crash unfold, questions linger about the circumstances leading to the tragedy. Flight tracking data and images from the wreckage have sparked interest, with partial tail numbers resembling aircraft associated with Prigozhin’s past use being identified.

The incident serves as a somber reminder of the complex web of events and personalities surrounding international conflicts. As the world waits for further information, the repercussions of this crash could potentially reverberate in both the political and military landscapes.

Use the internet wisely

The word war between two opposing camps or groups on social media about gender issue, social status, talents, skills and what have you grown toxic everyday. Their verbal squabble already spilled beyond the walls of decency and propriety like using the most mean and foul language which obviously cannot escape the eyes and ears of the young generation whose daily activities are anchored on their cell phones. Some obscene videos like the show of a certain Toni Fowler showing her naked breast and butt and shaking it like the kid’s toy “Lato-lato” is to me an assault to the inherent decorum and graciousness of Filipino women.

In the olden times, there were also burlesque shows featuring female dancers in skimpy attire but the same was being done in a place exclusively “for adults only”. Minors were normally prohibited from entering or watching such shows because the elderly believed that it corrupts the spirit and destroys the moral fiber of the young. With the advent of the internet, the proliferation of cell phones and the availability of various applications the use of which is not controlled by the net server, unguarded children can see the ugliest, the meanest and the vilest shows that suddenly pop up on the screen.

We cannot go back to the olden times because the world and the people have changed drastically. A lot of life-changing incidents happened, modern gadgets were invented, men have traveled the space and discovered many things in the universe totally unknown before. But those are not licenses for us to forget our humanity and simply embrace what’s new. There are matters we should maintain and preserve like our human dignity and respect for other people’s rights and beliefs.

One need not be a degree or title holder to understand what is right and what is wrong. What is needed is simple common sense, which sadly is not available in the market. Social media is good because it provides us with information not normally provided by the mainstream media but we should always be cautious and smart to detect what is authentic and what is fake. We should take hold of our sanity and not be easily influenced by the so-called “social media influencer” whose main target is fame and money out of their chosen platform – YouTube, Tiktok, Facebook.

Use the internet wisely and refrain from following applications and personalities that corrupt your morality, and destroy the inherent goodness of your character. Stay focused on being good “even if others do not, cannot, and will not.” Always bear in mind that life is short; that nobody lives forever; that there is a time for every season under the sun. One may earn millions and travel the world using a particular platform but as the Good Book tells us, ”What does it profit a man if he gains the world and loses his soul?”

‘T. Rexes’ compete in photo finish at Washington state racetrack

Auburn, Washington. The tranquil surroundings of a suburban Seattle horse racing track transformed into a prehistoric spectacle as over 200 participants donned inflatable Tyrannosaurus rex dinosaur costumes for a unique event. The 2023 T-Rex World Championships held at Emerald Downs, which originally began in 2017 as a pest control company’s team-building activity, culminated in a closely contested finish, resembling a scene from the dinosaur era.

In a surprising twist, the 100-yard (91.2-meter) dash concluded with a photo finish, with three contenders crossing the finish line simultaneously on Sunday. The top spot was secured by Ocean Kim, hailing from Kailua, Hawaii, who managed to nudge ahead of the pack and hit the finish wire first. Colton Winegar, adopting the persona of Deno the Dino, claimed second place, representing Boise, Idaho. Rex Ray Machine, portrayed by Seth Hirschi from Renton, took the third position.

The original Tyrannosaurus rex inhabited the Earth approximately 65 to 67 million years ago. A recent scientific study, published in the journal Science two years ago, estimated that about 2.5 billion of these remarkable creatures roamed the planet during their existence. Hollywood’s fascination with the carnivorous T. rex, epitomized by the “Jurassic Park” franchise, has only added to the public’s enduring intrigue in this ancient predator.

The T-Rex World Championships, born out of a quirky team-building exercise, have truly captured the imagination of participants and spectators alike, offering a playful nod to the awe-inspiring history of the fearsome T. rex.
