Rice millers: Presyo ng bigas inaasahang bababa ‘in 2-3 weeks’

0

Russia’s Luna-25 spacecraft crashes on moon, ending pursuit of lunar south pole

0

MOSCOW. Russia’s Luna-25 spacecraft crashed into the moon after entering an uncontrolled orbit, as confirmed by the country’s Roscosmos space agency on Sunday.

The unpiloted spacecraft had the ambitious goal of becoming the first to touch down on the lunar south pole. Scientists believed this area held significant reserves of frozen water and valuable elements.

The anticipated landing date was set for Monday. However, Roscosmos announced that communication with Luna-25 was lost on Saturday when the spacecraft encountered difficulties and reported an “abnormal situation.” Luna-25 was in a competition with an Indian spacecraft launched on July 14 to secure the first arrival at the south pole. Both craft were expected to reach the moon sometime between August 21 and 23. This lunar mission marked Russia’s first since 1976, during the era of the Soviet Union.

Only three governments—Soviet Union, United States, and China—have achieved successful moon landings. Scientists were particularly intrigued by the lunar south pole, where permanently shadowed polar craters were speculated to contain frozen water within rocks, a resource that future explorers could potentially transform into air and rocket fuel.

A previous Indian endeavor to land at the south pole in 2019 ended in failure when their spacecraft collided with the moon’s surface. Roscosmos aimed to demonstrate that Russia was capable of delivering payloads to the moon and securing guaranteed access to its surface. Sanctions imposed on Russia due to its actions in Ukraine had hindered its space program’s access to Western technology.

Initially planned to carry a small moon rover, the Luna-25 abandoned this idea to enhance the craft’s reliability by reducing its weight, according to analysts.

The spacecraft was launched from Russia’s Far East Vostochny Cosmodrome on August 10. This spaceport was a personal endeavor of Russian President Vladimir Putin and played a pivotal role in his aspirations to elevate Russia to a space superpower.

Family’s decision to donate body for pig kidney research could revolutionize transplants

0

NEW YORK. In a significant development, a family’s courageous choice to contribute a body for pig kidney research holds the potential to revolutionize transplantation procedures. Mary Miller-Duffy found herself in a state of shock and mourning when her brother suddenly collapsed and subsequently was declared brain-dead. This tragic situation posed a difficult question: Should she opt to donate her brother’s body for research purposes?

This marked the beginning of Maurice “Mo” Miller’s journey, as his body found its way to a well-lit corner of NYU Langone Health’s intensive care unit. His body’s involvement in this endeavor forms a crucial part of the ongoing effort to address the scarcity of transplantable organs by exploring the use of animal organs.

Miller-Duffy recalled that her brother had always been driven by a desire to assist others, making her decision even more challenging. However, she takes pride in her brother’s final act, seeing something positive emerge from the tragedy. She stated, “This unfortunate and sudden passing, as brief as it was, has yielded something positive.”

Medical professionals performed a groundbreaking procedure on July 14 by replacing Miller’s kidneys with one sourced from a genetically modified pig. Subsequently, the deceased man received care from doctors and nurses, mirroring the treatment provided to a living patient, as they eagerly monitored the progress over the course of the following days.

Astoundingly, more than a month later, the transplanted pig kidney is exhibiting all the functions of a healthy human kidney. This achievement marks the longest period that a pig kidney has successfully functioned inside a human body. As the calendar turns towards September, the focus is now on assessing whether the kidney can sustain its performance for a second month.

The Associated Press gained unique insight into the intricacies of experiments involving posthumous subjects, which could potentially bring the realization of animal-to-human transplants one step closer.

Gaza Strip welcomes its first cat cafe: A cozy haven from life amid blockade

0

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip. The worldwide trend of cat cafes, where individuals enjoy coffee while spending time with cats, has finally arrived in the besieged Gaza Strip. In this economically challenged Palestinian region governed by the Hamas militant group and afflicted by a 17-year-long blockade, residents seeking respite from the difficulties of their surroundings flocked to the newly established Meow Cafe on Thursday. This cafe is Gaza City’s version of the unique concept that has found success around the globe.

The founder of the cafe, Naema Mabed, aged 52, envisioned the establishment as a distinct escape from the challenges of life in Gaza. With limited recreational options, an alarming youth unemployment rate exceeding 60%, and frequent conflicts with Israel since Hamas took control of the region in 2007, Mabed aimed to provide a haven. Within the cozy atmosphere of the cafe, Mabed offers a modest beverage service and encourages patrons to head straight to the cat corner, where they can interact and play with the furry companions. The entry requirements are simple: visitors must don plastic covers over their shoes and cleanse their hands before engaging with the cats.

“I have devoted my life to raising cats, and they bring joy and tranquility—a release from life’s pressures,” Mabed shared with The Associated Press, while cats freely roamed around her. She likened communing with felines to a “global antidepressant.”

The customers seem to share this sentiment. They appeared delighted as they played and relaxed with the ten resident cats, each with names like Tom, Dot, Simba, and Phoenix. Some guests quietly absorbed the soothing presence of the cats.

Mabed emphasizes that the cats are not available for adoption, as she has a strong bond with her feline companions.

“The experience is truly about finding psychological comfort through the cats,” remarked 23-year-old Eman Omar, who paid the 5 Israeli shekels ($1.30) entrance fee to enjoy half an hour of cuddling with the cats. “Everything feels wonderful!”

Experts assert that the cafe serves a greater purpose beyond merely indulging cat enthusiasts and providing an opportunity for attractive selfies. Psychologist Bahzad al-Akhras stated that in places like Gaza, such sanctuaries can serve as therapeutic spaces for individuals impacted by the region’s devastating wars and other hardships.

“Any environment that facilitates human interaction with animals has a positive psychological influence,” al-Akhras commented.

Bringing the cat cafe trend to Gaza was no small feat for Mabed. Establishing the cafe in the region came with various challenges, extending beyond financial constraints. The concept of paying to spend time with cats in a place where stray cats roam the streets of Gaza City daily struck some residents as absurd.

However, for cat enthusiasts restricted in their ability to travel due to the Israeli-Egyptian blockade, and who might not encounter this immensely popular trend elsewhere, the experience proved to be pure bliss.

“If you have a soft spot for cats, this is the place for you,” affirmed Omar, one of the cafe’s customers. “And even if you’re not a cat lover, you’ll likely find yourself drawn to loving them.”

Miss Universe contestants sound alarm they allegedly had to strip off clothes for ‘body checks’

A lawyer asserts that Miss Universe contestants underwent scrutiny to detect ‘scars, cellulite, or tattoos’.

At least seven Miss Universe Indonesia contestants have reported instances of alleged sexual harassment, claiming that they were compelled to undergo “body checks,” according to the contestants’ attorney. The attorney, Mellisa Anggraini, stated that seven finalists who participated in the pageant held between July 29 and August 3 in Jakarta, accused pageant officials of requiring them to remove their clothing and underwear for examinations involving “scars, cellulite, or tattoos” on their bodies.

The reported checks took place in the presence of about two dozen individuals, including men, within the ballroom of the Sari Pacific Hotel where the pageant was conducted, as noted by Anggraini. “We have obtained some evidence, even videos showing that the organizer had carried out ‘body checks,'” the attorney added. Furthermore, Anggraini stated that five of the contestants claimed they were photographed without tops during the checks.

Priskila Ribka Jelita, a 23-year-old contestant, recounted her experience in an interview with The Associated Press: “When they asked me to open my bra… I was shocked! But I couldn’t speak or refuse. When I tried to cover my breast with my hand, I was even scolded and yelled at.” Jelita, who is one of Anggraini’s clients, described feeling “confused, nervous, and humiliated” during the process, particularly when she was instructed to lift her leg for an examination on the inside of her thigh.

The contestants’ attorney revealed that they were unaware that they would be subjected to such body checks, believing they were simply gathering for a fitting in the ballroom. Anggraini mentioned that more contestants might come forward to file similar complaints regarding the alleged body checks.

In response to the allegations, the Miss Universe Organization announced its decision to sever ties with its Indonesian franchisee, PT Capella Swastika Karya, and the director responsible for both Miss Universe Indonesia and Miss Universe Malaysia, Poppy Capella. The organization stated, “In light of what we have learned took place at Miss Universe Indonesia, it has become clear that this franchise has not lived up to our brand standards and ethics.”

The organization further declared the cancellation of this year’s Miss Universe Malaysia pageant, as the same franchisee holds the license for that event. The former director of Miss Universe Indonesia, Poppy Capella, denied any knowledge of the reported body checks and disavowed any involvement, also condemning “violence and sexual harassment.”

The Miss Universe organization expressed gratitude to the contestants who spoke out for their “bravery” and emphasized that measurements or weight are not prerequisites for participation in the contests. The statement concluded by expressing apologies to the women from the Indonesian pageant who had such an experience with the organization.
