Mediterranean diet may be the ultimate weapon vs prostate cancer

Men who consume colorful fruits and vegetables on a regular basis are less likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer (PC), according to new research by University of South Australia scientists.

A rainbow of foods rich in certain micronutrients helps to prevent prostate cancer (PC) as well as speed up recovery among men who undergo radiation treatment for the disease.

The findings, from two studies published in the journal Cancers, highlight the importance of a Mediterranean or Asian diet that includes these foods.

Researchers compared micronutrient plasma concentrations of prostate cancer patients with a healthy control group, revealing low levels of lutein, lycopene, alpha-carotene, and selenium in PC patients and high levels of iron, sulfur, and calcium in the same group, relative to controls.

Increased DNA damage after radiation exposure was also associated with low lycopene and selenium in blood plasma.

Men with plasma concentrations lower than 0.25 micrograms (ug) per milliliter (mL) for lycopene and/or lower than 120ug/L for selenium have an increased risk of prostate cancer and are likely to be more sensitive to the damaging effects of radiation.

Foods that are rich in lycopene include tomatoes, melons, papayas, grapes, peaches, watermelons, and cranberries. Selenium-rich foods include white meat, fish, shellfish, eggs, and nuts.

Study co-author Dr Permal Deo says eating foods that are naturally rich in lycopene and selenium is preferable to taking supplements, where the benefits are limited, according to previous studies.

“Our recommendation is to adopt a Mediterranean diet enlisting the help of a dietician because people absorb nutrients in different ways, depending on the food, the digestive system, the person’s genotype and possibly their microbiome,” Dr Deo says.

Prostate cancer remains one of the most common and fatal cancers in men, but the nutritional deficiencies associated with it remain largely unknown, hence this study.

Other risk factors, such as ethnicity, family history and age have previously been linked to prostate cancer.

“There is strong evidence that being overweight and tall increases the risk of prostate cancer. Diets high in dairy products and low in vitamin E may also increase the risk but the evidence is less clear.”

Vitamin E is found in plant-based oils, nuts, seeds, fruits, and vegetables.

The research is the first to evaluate plasma concentrations of micronutrients and trace elements with respect to prostate cancer in the South Australian population. (Sci Tech Daily)

Men who regularly consume a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables have a lower risk of being diagnosed with prostate cancer, according to two studies by University of South Australia researchers. These studies found that a Mediterranean or Asian diet, which includes a range of micronutrients, can help prevent prostate cancer and aid in recovery from radiation treatment for the disease. The research showed that low levels of certain micronutrients, such as lycopene and selenium, were associated with increased risk of prostate cancer and increased DNA damage after radiation exposure.

The saga of a great writer and poet

(1st of several parts)

The youngest of the three siblings by the second marriage between the late Don Sinforoso B. Evangelista and Dona Jovita Malaguit, Romy (Palasig) was born per his account three years before WWII.  His father was a successful businessman engaged in the buy & sell of copras and local production of coconut oil in the City of San Pablo.  Romy would recall to me the comfortable life he had as a child when his parents were still alive – big house, good food and a nanny that attended to his personal needs. All these lasted only for a short time.  His father was killed during the war by the Japanese Imperial Army leaving him and his elder brother Elizer in the care of their mother.

With lack of knowledge on how to run the business left by his father and with no sufficient savings to finance the needs of the family, her mother resorted to loans using some of the land titles as collateral. This angered his eldest brother Pedro by the first marriage  and allegedly poked his service pistol while cursing them.  Pedro was an official of the Philippine Army while his wife Nathalia was a member of the Women Auxiliary Corps.

Romy vividly narrated to me the agony and grief he suffered at the age of five when his mother got sick.  I almost could not believe his story that at a very young age, he was the one assisting his mother in going to the toilet, giving her medicines and water to drink.  “She  died in my arms”, he told me. “I was holding her as she was breathing heavily not knowing that she was already struggling for her life.” Every time he would remember this incident, he would shed tears in silence.

As an orphan, he and his brother Elizer lived with their Kuya Pedring until such time that he can no longer bear the kind of discipline being imposed upon them – something Romy abhorred so much. He left the house and lived with an old man near the San Pablo Train Station who taught him how to use daggers and knives to defend himself. As he grew older, he learned the art of using knives which he carried with him everywhere he went. He became the leader of a group of young men which he called ‘Stampers’ and was branded as “Kilabot ng Pitong Lawa”.

His life’s story roused the interest of Jojo Acuin, the known Nostradamus of the Philippines who tried to convince him to sell to him his story for film making but he refused. He courted and won the heart of a beautiful young lady Nelia K. Salamat over the objection of the girl’s parents because she was still studying.  They later got married and had five children – Florencia Ronalyn, Ronel, Roselle, Roreen and Raquel.  He sent Nelia to school again to finish her studies and eventually became a public school teacher.

In solidarity with women – and girls

0

It is nice to work with women, pray with women, talk with women. But as our individual contexts initially bring to light, creating an environment conducive to the empowerment of women will improve the world of the next generation in terms of narrowing gender gaps. Researchers and journalists must widely disseminate and follow up their studies. Many developed and developing countries have made great strides in women empowerment, but these countries should not rest on laurels. Empowering them must be wide-reaching.

Consider “empowerment from within” as a salient issue in communication and governance. How about empowering both women and girls? This will enthusiastically reflect that process. Their formative years are a determining factor; they are supposed to be made aware of the essentials of Christian ministries and be blessed by a lot of training programs and godly sermons like the need to know what to pray and how to pray while they are not mothers yet. The idea can be found in 2 Timothy 3:6-7, an English Standard Version of which says: “For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth.”

As for “women (and girls) empowerment from within” as a salient issue for us, communication researchers, this point may enable us “to understand, rather than be understood.” Listening more to them is a tall order. But once we gather enough data out of their “voice,” we may provide a good discussion of study results as well as a guide to the administration side of church ministries. This leads me to further suggest that this be included in study limitations: We may make it clearer that our participants are from a particular small Christian group of women (and girls) as more and more Muslim women and girls get benefitted from programs on gender equality promotion that includes their own version of “empowering (them) from within.”

Outside of our homes, apart from the religious sector, we may “check” woman group activities, or simply “makialam.” Sorilla (2022) recorded the following organizations that uphold women and related rights: Rags2Riches; Women’s Legal and Human Rights Bureau; Habi: The Philippine Textile Council; Child Protection Network; Kasuso: Philippine Foundation for Breast Cancer; Samahan ng mga Pilipina para sa Reporma at Kaunlaran (SPARK!); and ICanServe Foundation. Others have their long respective list of women’s groups.

Happy Women’s Month to every Gabriela Silang, Gregoria de Jesus, and Melchora Aquino (Tandang Sora) in our Pinay fold here and abroad. And to all women and girls on our Mother Earth, mabuhay. We should all be proud to stand in solidarity with them (mga babae).

“Detailed engineering [design] is now ongoing—it’s about 70 percent complete and we told the President it will be ready within the year to ground break the implementation of this very significant bridge,” ang sani niya sa reporters sa pakikipag pulong kay President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. sa Malacañan Palace.

“No less than the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has indicated that the economic rate of return of this bridge is more than 25 percent and that’s big,” ayon sa kanya.
