A popular streaming service, Netflix to charge an additional $8 month for viewers living outside US subscribers’ households
Netflix on Tuesday outlined how it intends to crack down on the rampant sharing of account passwords in the U.S., its latest bid to reel in more subscribers to its video streaming service as its growth slows.
To combat password sharing, Netflix said it will limit U.S. viewership of its programming to people living in the same household. Those who subscribe to Netflix’s standard or premium plans — which cost $15.50 to $20 per month — will be able to allow another person living outside their household to use their password for an additional $8 per month, a $2 discount from the company’s basic plan.
Without providing details how it authenticates subscriber identities or accounts, Netflix assured that everyone living in the same household of a U.S. customer will still be able to stream TV series and movies “wherever they are — at home, on the go, on holiday.” The company based in Los Gatos, California has roughly 70 million U.S. accountholders.
The long-anticipated move, telegraphed by Netflix a year ago, seeks to end a practice that the company allowed to go unchecked for years while its streaming service was attracting subscribers in droves. At that time, management had little incentive to risk riling customers by reining in password sharing.
While Netflix looked the other away, an estimated 100 million people worldwide were getting passwords from family and friends to freeload on Netflix TV series such as “The Crown” and films such as “All Quiet On The Western Front.” Those passwords were funneled through Netflix’s 232.5 million worldwide paying subscribers, who generated the bulk of the company’s $32 billion in revenue last year.
But after a year of lackluster subscriber growth that included its largest customer losses in more than a decade, Netflix is putting its foot down.
In February, it began blocking freeloading viewers in Canada, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain, following similar moves in Latin America.
Before the crackdown on password sharing, Netflix began introducing features, such as the ability to transfer the profiles set up on subscriber accounts to make it easier for people to retain their viewing histories after they are no longer able to watch shows for free.
Netflix’s effort to force more of its viewers to pay for access to its programming follows the launch of a $7 monthly plan that inserted commercials into its service for the first time. Netflix has picked up an additional 9 million worldwide subscribers since the ad-supported option debuted, although not all of those signed up for the low-priced plan.
Although the new U.S. surcharge for viewers living outside subscribers’ households is less than Netflix’s basic streaming plan, it comes at a time that Americans have been paring their discretionary spending because of high inflation. That inflationary squeeze, combined with more competition from other streaming services, is one of the main reasons Netflix has suffered a slowdown in growth.
Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters acknowledged last month that the crackdown on password sharing is likely to trigger an uptick subscriber cancellations, but expressed confidence the company will be better off in the long run after people adjust to the clampdown.
“We see an initial cancel reaction, and then we build out of that both in terms of membership and revenue as borrowers sign-up for their own Netflix accounts,” Peters assured analysts, citing how the crackdown has unfolded in Canada since February.
Netflix’s shares fell 2% Tuesday to close at $355.99. The stock remain up by about 20% so far this year.
“Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.” —Philippians 2:3-4 (KJV)
I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. —1 Timothy 2:1-2 (NLT)
Has anyone ever stated that PBBM works well in agriculture, and if so, why? First off, following are quotable quotes, including that of the Secretary of the Department of Agriculture. Listen to himself he should. I repeat, to himself (on the sixth and last quote).
“The president should reconsider his position and appoint a competent person who would take charge of the DA, end all controversies in the department, and focus on helping farmers and ensuring adequate food supply in the country…As clearly shown by the situation in the DA, it is very difficult to do all of those responsibilities and at the same time focus on the myriad of programs that must be handled by the DA Secretary.” —Sen. Risa Hontiveros,18 Aug 2022
“I can’t understand why Marcos took the job of concurrent agriculture secretary (which no other president has done) when he really hasn’t any experience in managing a huge bureaucracy nor does he have any expertise in agricultural production. Hubris, that only he alone could do the job? … Contrast his single visit to the Agriculture department to the 18 ‘social and leisure’ activities (five birthday parties) he has attended in and outside the Palace In effect, rather than things ‘moving quickly’ for the Agriculture department, these have all stopped, leaderless.” —Ex-Cabinet Secretary RigobertoTiglao Jr., 14 Oct 2022
“The president is seriously considering several people to appoint on a permanent basis or regular basis who will represent or minister the DA portfolio. But he has not yet signified to us that he is ready to announce his decision.” —Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, 23 Nov 2022
“Some sectors, Mr. ES, are urging the president because of the need for food production and food security, that he must already appoint a permanent secretary for the Department of Agriculture so the president can focus on more important other issues as leader of this country.” —Rep.Rodante Marcoleta (Sagip party-list), 23 Nov 2022
“However, all these cannot be implemented if the most important issue in the sector is not addressed. The DA lacks a leader who can supervise operations in the sector on a full-time, daily basis. President Marcos insists that being concurrent agriculture secretary will directly address problems afflicting the sector. How can he do this if he is busy with other important tasks such as national security, more so if he is often abroad selling the Philippines as an investment destination or attending to his foreign policy obligations as head of state?
“It is clear that the President cannot personally run the agriculture department 24/7. If agriculture is truly close to his heart, what he needs to do is appoint a trusted individual to helm the DA, someone personally close with a direct line to him. He can now name highly qualified allies who ran but lost in the May elections last year as the one-year ban on their appointment has lapsed.
“And his first marching order for a full-time DA secretary should be to clean up the department and its attached agencies such as the BPI of scalawags. Only then will the DA perform as it should and the agriculture sector contribute what it should to the economy.” —Philippine Daily Inquirer editorial, 22 May 2023
“Hindi, kailangan eksperto sa agrikultura. Agriculture is a very complicated subject. Hindi lang kung sino-sino basta’t magaling mag-manage. They have to understand the science… They have to understand the solution. They also have to understand the system… Unless, they’re involved in agriculture. Mayroon naman nag-retire diyan, they got heavily involved in agriculture, baka marunong na talaga sila, why not? … All the hard things, ‘yung mahirap gawin ngayon namin gagawin. Pag nagawa na namin ‘yung mga bucket list namin, natapos na namin, aalis na ako then I will give it to somebody else.” —PBBM, 20 Jan 2023
For its succinctness, the last quotable quote done four months ago is for his appropriate action (and for Bersamin’s announcement later). Or shall we say, here is the Agriculture chief reporting to the Chief Executive for his appropriate action?
All’s well that ends well. Kuya Pedring agreed with fatherly advice for us to love and cherish each other for as long as we live. As we went out of the door, he kept on reminding Romy to be good.
The following days, we became busy talking to our other prospective principal and secondary sponsors who all accepted our request with enthusiasm and genuine smiles. My daughter-in-law Marie accompanied me to my chosen local couturier for the wedding gown while my Publisher Dinah M. Carabio was the one who talked to the photographer, the make-up artist and the florist. Fiscal Ante Gonzales and his wife Joy sent me two sets of Barong Tagalog made of jusi for my sons Mike and Jeff who will be the ones to give me away, or shall I say escort me, on my wedding day.
Tony Caballejo, Boyet Marcelo, Clemente Tenorio and the rest of the group of Palasig in Labak erected a large tent at the back of our house where they will cook all the foods that will be brought to the venue of the wedding at Tierra de Oro Resort. My friends and playmates since I was a child, Levinia “Levy” G. Mariano and Rosalia “Baby” F. Corcolon were the ones who prepared and arranged all the driftwoods and flowers for the makeshift altar. The result was fantastic – beautifully and artistically made!
I thought everything was okay but the wedding gown did not turn out as expected. Hence, Marie had to ask my couturier to rush another gown a day before the wedding. That moment was stressful for all of us but Delia finished it just on time.
On the day of the wedding which is June 24, 2001, the entire dramatis personae arrived on time. All our Ninongs and Ninangs were present except for Judge Leonardo C. Paner who had to attend an equally important engagement in the United States. Our lady secondary sponsors were all dressed in shimmering gold while the gentlemen were clad in Barong Tagalog. We had two Little Brides that added to the delight of visitors – Cyrenne Kate P.Calanasan and Heartleen R. Albajera.
When the organ started to play for the commencement of the processional, everybody in the garden stood up to watch the beautiful ladies and the handsome gentlemen walking on the red carpet. Atty. Amy Melba S. Belulia, my Maid of Honor was the first on the line followed by Fiscal Ante D. Gonzales as Romy’s Best Man. Everybody was in awe watching Atty. Amy as she walked like a queen – a kind of walk that will put to shame the famous walk of Catriona Grey.

Land Transportation Office (LTO) chief Jose Art Tugade stepped down from his post on Monday due to “differences” with the Department of Transportation (DOTr).
In a statement posted by the Presidential Communications Office, Tugade said there were “differences” in the methods of the DOTr and the LTO on how to “succeed in serving the public.”
“For this reason, I am stepping down, so (Transportation) Sec. Jimmy Bautista will have the free hand to choose who he can work best with,” Tugade said.
“I will continue to root for the LTO’s success even as a private citizen, because I will always share in Sec. Bautista’s belief that our offices can be a formidable force for good in our country,” he added.
The LTO said Tugade’s resignation will take effect on June 1.
LA PAZ, Bolivia. Pope Francis has sent one of his top sex crimes investigators to Bolivia at a time when the Andean nation is being shaken by an escalating pedophilia scandal involving priests.
Monsignor Jordi Bertomeu, a leading member of the church’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, arrived in Bolivia on the same day as a former Jesuit seminarian landed in the country vowing to reveal more information about alleged cases of abuse.
The Bolivian Episcopal Conference said Bertomeu’s visit is not directly related to the recent sex abuse allegations but had been planned earlier to analyze “the progress made in the field of the culture of prevention” promoted by the Vatican.
Bertomeu arrived in Bolivia from Paraguay, where he had been investigating similar accusations against church officials and in 2018 he led the investigation into abuses committed by priests against minors in Chile.
The meetings in Bolivia “will be conducted in an atmosphere of profound closeness to all those who have been victims of the scourge of abuse in the Church,” the Episcopal Conference said in a statement.
Bertomeu “is a person of great trust to Pope Francis, who is responsible for addressing these issues, and he is coming to provide some guidance on how we can handle this issue, listen to and support the victims,” said Monsignor Giovani Arana, the Episcopal Conference’s secretary.
The visit comes soon after case of Spanish Jesuit Alfonso Pedrajas became public. According to a private diary accessed by the Spanish newspaper El País, Pedrajas allegedly abused about 85 minors in Catholic boarding schools in Bolivia in the 1970s and 1980s. He died of cancer in 2009.
The Prosecutor’s Office has initiated an investigation, which remains confidential, and has called on victims to file complaints.
The Jesuit Society in Bolivia has apologized to the victims and pledged to support the investigation while denouncing Pedrajas’ superiors for an alleged cover up. Many of the superiors are no longer in office or have died.
Pedro Lima, a former Bolivian Jesuit seminarian considered an important witness, has vowed to cooperate with the investigation. His arrival in Bolivia coincide with Bertomeu’s.
“I am not only a witness but also a victim of abuses of power, sexual abuse, and abuse of conscience by the Jesuit Society in Bolivia,” Lima said upon his arrival in the Bolivian capital of La Paz on Monday to testify before the Prosecutor’s Office.
During a news conference, Lima accused three Jesuits of covering up the alleged abuses.
“Apologies are not enough, these abuses cannot go unpunished. There must be reparation for the victims, and I am here to ensure that these painful events never happen again,” said Lima, who declined to provide details about the alleged abuses he suffered.
Lima’s assertions were questioned by the lawyer for the Jesuits, Audalia Zurita, who said Lima “held a position of power” to denounce the alleged abuses when in 2006 and 2007 he was a member of the Constituent Assembly that reformed Bolivia’s constitution and did not do so.
Lima left the Jesuit Society, where he was a teacher in schools and boarding houses, in 2001 and turned to politics. In 2012, he left the country claiming “political persecution” by the Movement Toward Socialism party, and sought refuge with the Jesuits in Paraguay, where he worked until recently.
“Of course, I worked with the Jesuits in Paraguay. Having worked with them does not mean that I should remain silent… when I wanted to denounce, they said there were no victims, no evidence,” he said.
Pedrajas’ case has brought other previously unresolved cases to light. Prosecutor Wilfredo Chávez stated that “there are 23 priests implicated in pedophilia in the country,” including one who was sent to pre-trial detention for three months last week.
There have been isolated protests in some churches and Catholic schools in Bolivia since the Pedrajas case came to light.
People protest with signs that read in Spanish “Prison for pedophile priests” outside the Bolivian Archbishopric office in La Paz, Bolivia, Friday, May 19, 2023. Milton Murillo, a Bolivian priest, has been remanded in custody on suspicion of abusing seminarians a decade ago, shortly after news broke of what has turned out to be the largest pedophilia scandal in the Andean country’s history, involving the deceased Jesuit priest.
Ayon sa Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), nagpadala sila ng halos 690,000 relief goods “saan man sa bansa.”
Ms Barnawi is joined on Axiom Mission 2 by fellow Saudi mission specialist Ali Alqarni, the second male astronaut from the Gulf kingdom to go to space, and two Americans, commander Peggy Whitson and pilot John Shoffner.
The crew traveled to space inside SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft, which sat atop the Falcon 9 rocket launched from Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, at 21:37 GMT on Sunday.
Dragon docked autonomously with the ISS at 13:12 GMT on Monday, Axiom Space tweeted.
During their time on the orbiting laboratory the crew will conduct more than 20 science and technology experiments, including the repercussions of space on human health and rain-seeding technology.
Ms Barnawi’s experiments will be based on some of the work she has done over the past nine years as a research lab technician at the Stem Cell and Tissue Re-engineering Programme of King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Riyadh.
At a recent news conference, she said that becoming the first female Saudi astronaut to go to space was “a great pleasure and honor that I’m very happy to carry”.
She also said she was looking forward to sharing her experience on board the ISS through video link-ups with children.
“Being able to see their faces when they see astronauts from their own region for the first time is very thrilling.”
Mishaal Ashemimry, a Saudi-American aerospace engineer and adviser to the Saudi Space Commission, said: “Our goals are to benefit all humanity through science.”
“We hope this mission will inspire girls from various backgrounds in order to advance the human experience.”
Women in Saudi Arabia only gained the right to drive in 2018, and human rights groups say male guardianship laws still limit women’s rights there.
First Arab female astronaut. Saudi Arabia Sunday made history as its first female astronaut, Rayyanah Barnawi launched toward the International Space Station (ISS).
