Keeping photographs and souvenirs

January 16, 2023, Monday, a local holiday in my beloved San Pablo City. I visited my high school batchmate Rose SJ Lanuza in her house at Brgy. San Benito, Victoria, Laguna.  Just like me, she was alone tending to her orchids and looking intently at her house as she is going to Australia and would stay there for quite a while. “I will miss all of you and the good times we had together”, she said referring to our HS Batch 1968.  Then she wiped her face with a towel obviously wiping her sweat that mingled with her tears I supposed. SS

Since we celebrated our batch Golden Anniversary in 2018, we regularly met to share wonderful stories of our family life, of our humble achievements as parents and of what more is in store for us in the near future. There was so much fun and we saw how much time changed between each of us – from sporting long black hair to short gray one; wrinkled skin; bended back; limping walk; blurred vision; dental loss and the maintenance of medicines for hypertension, diabetes, and other illnesses. All these did not deter us from seeing each other regularly until the pandemic stopped us.

Our Class President Norberto Belen who is currently in the USA continues to monitor all of us through social media always making sure that the OIC he appointed in the person of Ruel C. Alimario is doing his best to keep the Batch intact.  With less than thirty persons to “watch” who are all cooperative and disciplined, everything is easy for Ruel although sometimes, he spent his own money just to make sure that any agreed event will push through.

With regards to the venue for big events like Christmas Party, our Class Valedictorian Legor Mendoza, who is currently the Barangay Chairperson of Brgy. Sta. Rosa in Alaminos, Laguna, allows us to use her farm including all the amenities therein for free.  Every moment we share together wherever we choose to go are treasures no amount of money can buy. These are reflected in all the videos and photographs stored in our mobile phones. Thanks to technology, the memories we created are deposited safely for us to revisit when we feel like it.

Rose SJ Lanuza is aware that technology is evolving and sooner or later, all our videos and photos will be erased or removed to give way to something new so she made a very wise decision. She secured hard copies of chosen photographs from our affair in 2018 up to the present, arranged it according to dates and events and placed it in thick photo albums for posterity. She spent a lot of money for it but it’s worth it, she said.

True enough, as I turned the pages of the album Rose made, I felt I was traveling down memory lane reminding me of the hardships, challenges, achievements, failures and successes we went through before we reached this point in our lives.  Many of us did not make it this far because they died young so we agreed to spend more time together while we still have the energy and time to sing, dance, eat and travel.  Life is short as we all are aware of so we better make the most out of it like keeping photographs and souvenirs.

Driving communication’s future? Test intelligence

0

Twenty-two years ago EDSA Dos or the second people power uprising toppled Philippine President Joseph Estrada over allegations of corruption, with a 13-0 Supreme Court decision supporting the Vice President’s takeover. He would later become a convicted plunderer and get a life sentence, but then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo pardoned him. Estrada’s exiting Malacanang, the seat of power, revealed the importance of information and communications technology (ICT) as cellphone text messaging or SMS kept people abreast of the four-day uprising, with protests being smoothly coordinated.

A mere “coup de text” like that can hardly be effective these days. In fact, it was as early as the Arab Spring or that series of pro-democracy revolts in Tunisia, Morocco, Syria, Libya, Egypt, and Bahrain largely beginning in 2011 or ten years after EDSA Dos. The ICT-in-action during the time was activism on Word Wide Web with extensive use of the relatively new digital social media.

It is good to be forward-looking insofar as the role of ICT in developing countries such as ours is concerned. Fast forward to 2023, however, have we prepared young Filipinos with the critical foundation in the art, science, and practice of social media? Do we have the moral fiber to smoothly drive communication’s future assuming we can? Advancing their ideas on it, Randy David, Ramon Guillermo, Jose Mario De Vega, and a few more professors found out that we do have it, but they also underscored the intellect in order for us to substantially change the paradigm early enough.

De Vega told his colleagues that opening open forums meant for students, teachers, and educational institutions is one small step for us not to be overstepped by our new inventions, the last being the artificial intelligence (AI) tools. Then, test the “intelligence” of AI in a very personal way like what the other two noted professors did.

De Vega (2023) correctly pointed out: “(N)o matter how great, fast, and powerful these latest apps and technologies are, as long as we use our head, maximize our reason, and think for ourselves, there is no way that machines will overwhelm or defeat us. In fact, I will reiterate: it is not us against the machine. How can a mere creature overpower its creator? Machines are not the enemy. Our opponent is the person who does not think. Our enemy is laziness, cowardice, indifference, pride, prejudice, and misplaced arrogance.”

Who wants to see another student who would go on as senate president without knowing what plagiarism is? He did plagiarize while inside the august hall of the upper chamber and did lose twice in the elections, but still had no remorse for not being a role model for would-be leaders of the nation, including the digital native students who intend to finish their courses without being hounded by academic dishonesty issues in the future.

Leaders’ lies told again and again cannot be halted. The ICT and related machinery will soon be there to protect truth-telling and facilitate the deepening of our national character as well as democracies outside of us.

Lucena rice farmers nag level up ng farming techniques

0

Lucena, City, Quezon.

“We all should be open to advancement in farming techniques and equipment like transplanter and mechanized harvester to boost our production. The ideal rice varieties will also help us maximize the planting and harvesting season, ensures food security, even only in rice,” ayon kay Merano.

“This is good news to us.

“That signifies na kakaunti na lang ang namamatay dahil sa Covid dito sa ating bansa (that people dying from Covid-19 are fewer nationwide) and we are able to prevent already further deaths because of disease,” ayon sa kanya.

“After (a) series of negotiations, our Team 4A (Calabarzon) have convinced these two former PNP personnel to surrender and stop putting the image of the PNP in a bad light,” ayon kay de Leon sa isang statement.

After five successful editions, Sine Kabataan is back for its sixth year! The Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) is holding an open call for short film entries for Sine Kabataan Short Film Lab and Festival 2023. Submission of entries is from January 13 to February 10, 2023.

The Sine Kabataan Short Film Competition not only aims to provide a platform to young Filipino filmmakers but also elevate their creativity and storytelling skills that are reflective of how they perceive the issues they face today. The competition is open to filmmakers ages 18-30 years old who have produced at least one short film.

20 story concepts which can be live action, documentary, animation or experimental will be shortlisted from the pool of submissions. Those who make the cut will undergo exclusive film labs which will cover topics from development up to post-production. With the easing of COVID-19-related restrictions, the FDCP will be shifting its film labs to a hybrid on-site and digital platform to equip the filmmakers with technical knowledge and practical skills in production.

From the 20 shortlisted projects, 10 will be chosen as finalists by a Selection Committee after a Pitch Showcase and each of them will receive a production grant of PHP 100,000 to produce their story concepts.

The FDCP expands the running time requirement this year from five (5) minutes to seven (7) up to 20 minutes to grant the competing filmmakers an opportunity to better express themselves and to let them explore treatments that will further maximize the potential of their story concepts.
