DA ‘aalisin ang middleman’ para mapababa ang presyo ng sibuyas

Upang pababain ang presyo ng tingi ng sibuyas, sinabi ng Department of Agriculture nitong Sabado na nakatutok ito sa pag-aalis ng maraming layer ng mga mangangalakal na nagdudulot ng mataas na halaga ng mga bilihin.

“Right now, what we are doing is to eliminate certain layers of traders because that will help bring down the price. As we all know, retail price includes the cost of biyahero (trader) and the cost of the retailer,” ayo kay Agriculture Assistant Secretary and spokesperson Kristine Evangelista sa isang news forum sa Dapo Restobar sa Quezon City.

Inanunsyo ng opisyal ng DA na ang mga retail na presyo ng sibuyas sa mga wet market ay nananatiling mahigit na PHP400–PHP 550 kada kilo.

Bukod sa pagpapalakas ng market linkage sa pagitan ng mga producer at consumer, idinagdag ni Evangelista na tinitingnan din ng DA kung may iba pang bottlenecks sa supply chain, at binibigyang kakayahan din ang mga kooperatiba ng mga magsasaka na gampanan ang papel ng middlemen.

Hinggil sa pag-aangkat ng sibuyas, tiniyak ng DA na hindi makakaapekto sa mga magsasaka ang mga inaangkat na produkto.

Ngayong linggo ay inaprubahan ng DA ang pag-aangkat ng 21,060 metrikong tonelada ng sibuyas, at nagtakda ng deadline sa Enero 27 para sa lahat ng eligible importers para sa ipasok ang kanilang mga shipment.

Ang pag-aangkat ng sibuyas ay ginawa upang mapigil ang mga pagtaas ng presyo ng mga bilihin sa mga lokal na pamilihan bago ang peak season ng ani na inaasahan sa kalagitnaan ng Pebrero.

Inaasahan ng mga lokal na nagtatanim ng sibuyas ang pag-aani sa Pebrero hanggang Abril.

Para sa mga pangmatagalang hakbang, sinabi ni Evangelista na ang DA ay magpapatupad ng mga interbensyon upang mapababa ang gastos ng produksyon at kasabay nito ay mapataas ang ani.

Sinabi niya na tinitingnan din nila ang mga posibleng lugar para sa lokasyon ng mga cold-storage facility na itatayo ng DA upang mag-imbak ng labis na ani.

“The Bureau of Plant Industry has a list of accredited cold-storage facilities, but we need to put up additional facilities. That is included in the DA budget this year. These facilities are meant to be strategically-located in production areas,” ayon kay Evangelista.

Nasamsam ng BOC ang P240M halaga ng smuggled na asukal sa Batangas

Batangas City. Nasamsam ng Bureau of Customs (BOC) ang 4,000 metric tons ng refined sugar mula sa Thailand na nagkakahalaga ng PHP240 milyon sa Batangas port noong Biyernes.

Sa isang pahayag na inilabas kahapon, sinabi ng BOC na ang isang composite team ay agad na nagsagawa ng operasyon kasunod ng isang tip na ang VOI MV SUNWARD ay may dalang hindi idineklara na kargamento na dumaong sa pier noong Huwebes nang notice of arrival na inihain sa BOC.

Ang nakumpiskang kargamento ng white refined sugar (brand ng Sun) na may kabuuang timbang na 50 kilo bawat bag ay ipinadala sa Stone Int’l. Co. Ltd. mula sa shipper na Thai Sugar Trading Corp.

Naglabas na ng Warrant of Seizure and Detention (WSD) si Batangas Port District Collector Rhea Gregorio laban sa shipment at sugar shipment.

Samantala, ikinalulungkot naman ni Commissioner Yogi Filemon Ruiz ang patuloy na pagtatangka ng mga smuggler na ipasok ang mga hindi deklaradong produkto sa bansa.

“We are appalled at the audacity of these groups to continue with their activities despite the BOC’s intensified efforts lately to apprehend them. But thankfully, our team is just as relentless and tenacious too, once and for all, end such reprehensible acts,” ayon sa kanya.

Sta. Cruz, Laguna. Arestado ang isang most wanted person sa regional level, sa kasong rape sa isang joint manhunt operation kahapon sa Calamba City, Laguna. 

Kinilala ni Police Colonel Randy Glenn Silvio, direktor ng Laguna Police Provincial Office ang akusado na si alyas Thata, residente ng Calamba City at tubong Zamboanga Del Sur.

Ayon kay Police Lieutenant Colonel Milany E. Martirez, hepe ng Calamba City Police Station (CPS), isinagawa ng Calamba CPS at San Pablo City Police Station ang operasyon sa bisa ng warrant of arrest sa kasong rape na inilabas ng Regional Trial Court Branch 22, 9th Judicial Region, Pagadian City, noong June 20, 2018, na walang nirerekomendang piyansa.

“I commend our personnel’s efforts in this operation. Hindi natin hahayaan na maging taguan o pugad ng mga criminal ang ating nasasakupan. Paiigtingin pa ng Laguna PNP ang operasyon laban sa kriminalidad upang masiguro ang pagkahuli ang mga gumawa ng krimen sa labas man o sa loob ng probinsya,” ayon kay Silvio.

Sta. Maria, Laguna. Nasakote ng mga tauhan ng Sta. Maria Municipal Police Station (MPS) ang isa pa sa apat na suspects na nanambang at pumatay sa dating kagawad ng barangay at pangulo ng farmers cooperative sa Sitio, Silangan,Brgy. Santiago, ng bayang ito. 

Ayon sa report na isinumite ni PLt.Col. Randy Glenn Silvio, Laguna Police Provincial Director kay PBGeneral Jose Melencio Nartatez, Regional Director of PRO CALABARZON, ang suspek ba nadakip ay kinilalang si Noel Buluran, 41, may- asawa at residente ng St Maria.

Ayon naman kay Police Major Evenier, hepe ng Sta Maria MPS, si Buluran ang isa sa mga suspect na responsable sa pagkamatay ni Diamante.

Matatandaan na matapos tambangan at mapatay si Diamante ay agad na tumakas ang mga salarin subalit nahuli ang isa sa mga ito na si Edgar Evangello sa isang police checkpoint.

Hinihinalang pulitika ang motibo sa krimen kaugnay sa muling pagtakbo bilang konsehal ng barangay ng suspect.

Apat sa walong Filipino traveler mula sa China na nagpositibo sa coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) at nahawahan ng dalawang Omicron sub variants, ayon kay  Department of Health Epidemiology Bureau Director Dr. Alethea de Guzman noong Biyernes.

Sa isang online townhall meeting, iniulat ni de Guzman na tatlo ang infected ng BF.7 habang ang isa ay infected ng BA.5.2.

“Ito ‘yung mga hindi bagong variants. Dati na nating ‘tong mga nade-detect,” ayon sa kanya.

Ang mga sample ng iba pang apat na manlalakbay ay walang assigned lineage.

“Minsan pagka-transport nade-degrade ‘yung quality ng specimen kaya hindi natin ma-sequence,” ayon pa rin kay de Guzman.

Nauna rito, sinabi ng World Health Organization na ang BF.7 at BA.5.2 ang nagtutulak sa kamakailang wave ng mga impeksyon sa Covid-19 sa China.

Noong Disyembre 27, 2022 hanggang Enero 2, 2023, pumasok sa bansa ang walong Pinoy na manlalakbay mula sa China. Lahat sila ay hindi nabakunahan at nag positibo sa test sa pamamagitan ng antigen screening pagdating sa airport.

Mayroon silang 89 na close contact at isa lamang sa mga contact na ito ang nagpakita ng mga sintomas ng Covid-19. (PNA)

Makulimlim at maulan ngayong Sabado habang papunta ang LPA sa Surigao Sur

Makulimlim na papawirin at inaasahan ang pag-ulan sa kalakhang bahagi ng bansa ngayong araw ng Sabado dahil sa low-pressure area (LPA) at Northeast Monsoon o “amihan.”

Sa kanilang 4 a.m. weather bulletin, sinabi ng Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) na huling tinantya na ang LPA ay nasa baybayin ng Lanuza, Surigao del Sur.

Magiging maulap, na may kalat-kalat na pag-ulan at pagkidlat-pagkulog, sa Calabarzon, Mimaropa, at nalalabing bahagi ng Visayas at Mindanao dahil sa LPA.

Magdadala din ito ng maulap na kalangitan na may kalat-kalat hanggang sa malawak na pag-ulan at pagkidlat-pagkulog sa Rehiyon ng Bicol, Silangang Visayas, Dinagat Islands, at Surigao del Norte.

Sa kabilang banda, ang “amihan” ay magdadala ng maulap na papawirin na may mga pag-ulan sa Metro Manila, Aurora, Nueva Ecija, at Bulacan.

Ang nalalabing bahagi ng Luzon ay makakaranas ng bahagyang maulap hanggang sa maulap na papawirin na may mahinang pag-ulan na dala ng “amihan.”

Ang hangin sa buong bansa ay magiging katamtaman hanggang sa malakas, mula sa timog-silangan hanggang hilagang-silangan sa Hilagang Luzon at hilagang-silangan hanggang hilagang-kanluran sa iba pang bahagi ng bansa.

Ang temperatura sa San Pablo City, Laguna ay 27°C hanggang 23°C, Metro Manila ay mula 22°C hanggang 29°C; Lungsod ng Laoag, 21°C hanggang 30°C; Lungsod ng Lipa, 23°C hanggang 29°C; Metro Cebu, 23°C hanggang 27°C; Cagayan de Oro City, 24°C hanggang 27°C; at Metro Davao, 24°C hanggang 29°C. (PNA)

Macasaet takes over SSS

President and Chief Executive Officer Rolando Ledesma Macasaet formally assumed the post as the 20th head of the Social Security System (SSS) from outgoing PCEO Michael Gonzales Regino during turnover ceremonies held at the Magsaysay Hall of the SSS main office in East Avenue, Quezon City on Tuesday, January 10, 2023.

Macasaet, who held the position of President and General of the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) during the last four years of the Duterte Administration, was appointed by President Bongbong Marcos to head the SSS last week.

In his brief speech, Macasaet assured the SSS officials and employees that under his stewardship, the agency will continue with the reforms and innovations started by Regino to provide better social services to workers and pensioners.  

“I will continue with the path of growth started by PCEO Regino and explore new ways for the benefit of members, pensioners, and other stakeholders,” Macasaet said. “We will work doubly hard to provide our current members and pensioners what is just and due to them without jeopardizing the financial protection of members and future pensioners,” he added.

The new SSS Chief said he was grateful to President Marcos for giving him the opportunity to serve under his administration by overseeing the state-run pension fund for those in the private sector.

“President Ferdinand R. Marcos has high expectations from us to provide guaranteed safety nets to the Filipino people,” Macasaet said. “We have to work doubly hard so we could provide our current members and pensioners on what is just and due to them without putting in jeopardy the financial protection of current members and future pensioners.”

At the same time, Macasaet commended Regino for his dedicated hard work and professional as PCEO and for instituting various reforms and programs that made SSS a leading social protection institution in the country today.

“PCEO Regino managed to transform the agency into a government show window of reform, efficacy, and dedicated public service,” Macasaet said. “The records will show that under his leadership, the SSS achieved new heights in improved social security services, in better coverages and benefits to pensioners, in providing equitable loans, better investments and improved collections.”

Earlier in his own speech, Regino urged Macasaet, whom he described as his personal friend, to continue with the implementation with the innovations he introduced that will result to better services to at least 3.1 million SSS pensioners in the country.

Macasaet took his Oath of Office before Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin in Malacañang on January 5, 2023. Regino served as SSS PCEO for nine months after being appointed by former President Rodrigo Duterte in March 2022. Before that, he was a member of the Social Security Commission, the highest policy-making body of the SSS.

Both Macasaet and Regino are natives of Zamboanga City and were high school classmates at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University class of 1977. They started their professional careers in Metro Manila and were appointed to key positions during the Duterte administration.

During his term, Regino said the SSS increased its efficiency, built its investment portfolio and ensured the timely and proper delivery of benefits to SSS members.  In his nine-months as PCEO, Regino implemented innovative programs that benefit its members and employers.

Among these programs are the flexible contribution payment schedule for farmers and fishermen, the Contribution Subsidy Provider Program, the Consolidation of Past Due Short-Term Member Loans with Condonation of Penalty, Contribution Penalty Condonation Programs (CPCPs) for business and household employers, and the Workers’ Investment and Savings Program (WISP) Plus. The SSS also disbursed a record of P238 billion in benefits to members, pensioners, and their beneficiaries.

Before joining SSS, Macasaet had an extensive experience in public service as he served in various leadership capacities in several Government-Owned and Controlled Corporations (GOCCs) from 1988 to 2005, such as the Philippine National Construction Corporation, Dasmariñas Industrial Steel Corporation, Skyway Corporation, and Tierra Factors Corporation.

Moreover, he has more than two decades of professional experience in financial services, banking, and public-private partnerships, most of it under the Philippine National Bank, which makes him a perfect fit to manage the pension fund. He also served as a Board Member of various companies such as San Miguel Corporation, Bank of Commerce, Private Infrastructure and Development Corporation, and PCI Bank.

Macasaet worked for the Bank of Montreal, served as Director of Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank in Beijing and with the Philippine National Bank (PNB) as vice president in Los Angeles and ASEAN based in Singapore.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Economics, Cum Laude, from the University of the Philippines and has earned a Master of Business Administration from the same university. He also finished an Executive Program in Finance at Columbia University and a Diploma in Management at Harvard Business School, both in the United States. (SSS)

Biñan City, Laguna. Arestado ang isang high value individual at ang kanyang kasabwat sa isang drug buy-bust operation na isinagawa ng mga tauhan ng Biñan City Police Station (CPS) kahapon.

Nakumpiska sa mga suspek ang dalawampu’t-anim na plastic sachets na naglalaman ng hinihinalang shabu na may timbang na 165 gramo at may tinatayang nagkakahalaga ng Php 1,072,500.00.

Kinilala ni Police Colonel Randy Glenn G Silvio, Acting Provincial Director, Laguna PPO ang mga suspek na sila alyas Beverly (HVI) at Junjun, pawang mga residente ng Biñan City Laguna.

Ayon sa ulat ni Plt Col. Virgilio M. Jopia, hepe ng Biñan CPS, nagkasa ng isang  anti-illegal drug buy bust operation ang kanilang Station Drug Enforcement Unite (SDEU)  sa  Brgy. Malaban, Biñan City, Laguna na nagresulta sa agarang pagkaaresto ng mga nabanggit na suspek matapos bumili ng droga sa kanila ang mga awtoridad na nagpanggap bilang poseur buyer kapalit ang buy-bust money.

Kasalukuyang nasa kustodiya ng Biñan CPS ang mga arestadong suspek habang ang mga nasamsam na ebidensya ay ipapadala sa Crime Laboratory para sa forensic examination.

NAkatakdang humarap ang mga suspek sa kasong paglabag sa R.A 9165 o “Comprehensive Dangerous Drug Act of 2002”.

“Sa pagkahuli ng mga suspek na ito, gusto ko ipaabot sa mga kababayan natin na walang puwang dito sa buong lalawigan ng Laguna ang mga drug pusher na katulad nito. Makakaasa po kayo na hindi namin ititigil ang aming mga operasyon kontra ilegal na droga at maging sa mga iba pang ilegal na gawain upang matiyak natin ang kaayusan, katahimikan  at siguridad ng ating mga mamamayan,” ayon kay Silvio.

‘Travel goals’ of politicians hamper the goal of educational tourism

Call it educational tourism or edu-tourism, but the fact remains that state universities and colleges’ overall mission on it is doomed to fail because of the “travel goals” of politicians. Private higher education institutions, for that matter, need to use their potential and stop following the practices of their counterparts in the countryside.

There is no doubt that we generally lack dynamic management and leadership skills simply because our local and national politicians use a huge sum of taxpayer pesos for their travel goals in America, Europe, and Asia. Just take a close look at university projects for edu-tourism, their health and environmental impacts if any, and you would instantly spot them on your own: Sayang.

Even short-term goals cannot be achieved, though educators have done and are doing their best enriching students with cultural and related experience by their educational travels. While the educators intensely provide high-quality curricular offerings in hospitality and tourism, Congress tolerates non-stop errors of judgment by some of its “honorable” members from its two chambers, whose horrible official travel expenses redound to benefits that are simply not great. It is the same Congress which does not have the balls or scruples to instigate high-level talks to make sure taxpayer money is spent wisely and judiciously in foreign trips of officials. “Juicylicious” funds and future support for political undertakings are going to happen should they keep mum on excessive foreign travel issues. Pundits note that Congress cannot see real threats to the public out of these secret deals made before and after the top officials travel abroad. Have we heard of a single congressional inquiry dissecting the budget rundowns of the official tours made in the last six months? Majority of congressmen and senators are a hit and miss in terms of exercising their check-and-balance power to override and reject extravagant ideas of going out of the country as their constituents keep on asking for basic social and health services to no avail.

We always hear university projects getting small budgets, while all we hear from our legislators and key government officials is that they triumph on their trips overseas. They trumpet billions and trillions of fresh investment “pledges,” but economic experts think otherwise. According to them, every nation-state pledge these days means nothing but an empty promise. You may even contemplate why these politicians allow these to happen; it is all because out of all these trips, they can successfully advance their art of PR.

But who are really going to invest in the Philippines and how ready are they to know that we are not ready for them? Neither for ourselves. On the bright side, educators and their institutions are focused on their educative mission, busying themselves more on the local edu-tourism, with many of them even extending their service to the service and agriculture sectors. Simply put, politicians’ “travel goals” must go away.

The voluntary recall is pursued by the MAH due to the detection of ethylene glycol above the maximum allowable limit of 0.1% in 1 batch of the raw material propylene glycol which is used as an excipient to the subject product. As part of the MAH’s precautionary measure to protect the right to health of the public, the affected batch including all other available batches will be voluntarily recalled.

The potential risk of high doses of ethylene glycol may result to abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, inability to pass urine, headache, altered mental state and acute kidney injury which may lead to death in younger kids.

Iron + Vitamin B Complex is indicated for the treatment and prevention of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in children, latent insufficiency of iron and vitamin B during the growth period; iron deficiency after loss of blood. It may also be used as supplement during conditions of chronic illnesses and during convalescence. Iron + Vitamin B Complex  Syrup [Sangobion Kids] is packed in 100 mL amber glass bottle.

Therefore, distributors, hospitals, retailers, pharmacies, or clinics that have stocks of the product are instructed to discontinue further distribution, sale, and use. Likewise, all consumers are advised not to use or purchase Sangobion Kids Syrup.
