Kim Jong Un’s daughter visits family mausoleum, fuels speculation as potential heir

0

SEOUL — The teenage daughter of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, reportedly named Kim Ju Ae and around 13 years old, made her first known visit to a sacred family mausoleum on New Year’s Day. This move, experts say, could reinforce her standing as a potential successor.

State media images released Friday showed Kim Ju Ae at the forefront alongside her parents, bowing deeply at Pyongyang’s Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, where the embalmed bodies of her late grandfather Kim Il Sung and great-grandfather are preserved. The palace, often described as a symbol of the regime’s legitimacy, is frequently visited by Kim Jong Un during major state anniversaries.

Cheong Seong-Chang, deputy head of South Korea’s private Sejong Institute, described the visit as “a politically orchestrated move” ahead of the upcoming Workers’ Party congress. Analysts speculate that Kim Jong Un may consider giving his daughter a senior party post, potentially the first secretary role, which is the second-highest position in the ruling party. However, other experts caution that she may instead be assigned lower-level positions due to her young age.

Kim Ju Ae has appeared in state media since November 2022, accompanying her father at military parades, missile launches, and high-profile visits abroad, including a September trip to Beijing. During this year’s New Year celebrations, she was seen kissing her father on the cheek, highlighting their close relationship.

The upcoming Workers’ Party congress, the first in five years, is expected to set new policy priorities and reshuffle officials. North Korea has not announced the exact dates, but South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) projects it could occur in January or February.

The NIS also previously identified Kim Ju Ae as her father’s likely heir, though some international analysts argue that her young age and North Korea’s male-dominated power structure could complicate succession. Kim Jong Un, 41, has reportedly shown no major health issues, easing concerns about an immediate leadership transition.

Observers note that publicly introducing Kim Ju Ae marks a departure from tradition. Neither Kim Jong Un nor his father, Kim Jong Il, were publicly acknowledged in state media during their childhoods. Experts suggest that repeated appearances by Kim Ju Ae are likely intended to cultivate public acceptance of a continuation of the Kim family’s dynastic rule.

“These criminal groups are ruthless. They deceive Filipinos with promises of high-paying jobs and easy money, then subject them to abuse once they are trapped,” ayon kay Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado sa isang pahayag.

“Let this serve as a strong warning: no legitimate employer will require you to scam your own countrymen or invest through unofficial platforms,” dagdag pa niya.

“The Bureau of Immigration is working closely with law enforcement partners to track, disrupt, and dismantle these scam rings. We are committed to protecting Filipinos and preventing these syndicates from continuing to victimize our people,” ani Viado.

Around 40 dead, 115 injured in Swiss Alpine bar fire during New Year’s celebration

CRANS-MONTANA, Switzerland — About 40 people were killed and 115 others injured, most seriously, after a fire tore through the Le Constellation bar at Crans-Montana, a renowned Swiss Alpine resort, during New Year’s celebrations, authorities said.

Valais Canton police commander Frédéric Gisler said officials are working to identify the victims and notify their families, describing the local community as “devastated.”

Thirteen of the injured were Italian citizens, while six others remain unaccounted for, Italy’s ambassador to Switzerland, Gian Lorenzo Cornado, told state-run RAI television.

Beatrice Pilloud, Valais Canton attorney general, said it was too early to determine the fire’s cause. She added that no one has been arrested and there are currently no suspects. “The investigation is not directed at anyone; it is meant to clarify the circumstances of this tragic fire,” she said.

Several witnesses described total chaos inside the crowded bar. Sixteen-year-old survivor Axel Clavier told The Associated Press that he saw people suffocating, panicking, and attempting to escape through windows. One of his friends died, and two or three remain missing.

Two women speaking to French broadcaster BFMTV said they saw bar staff carrying a lit candle in a bottle, which sparked flames that brought down the wooden ceiling. Crowds surged through a narrow basement staircase and door as they tried to escape.

The number of injured quickly overwhelmed the intensive care unit and operating theater of the regional hospital, according to Mathias Reynard, head of the Valais Canton government. Authorities urged locals to exercise caution in the coming days to avoid incidents that could further strain medical resources.

Crans-Montana is a top destination for international skiing and golf and will host the final World Cup events before the Milan-Cortina Olympics in February.

Swiss President Guy Parmelin, speaking on his first day in office, said many emergency personnel “faced scenes of indescribable violence and distress.” He called on the public to respond with “prayer, unity, and dignity” in the wake of the tragedy.

Meta faces scrutiny over fraudulent ads, allegedly manipulated transparency tools to avoid regulation

Internal documents reveal that Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has long struggled with widespread fraudulent advertising on its platforms and took steps to avoid regulatory scrutiny while protecting billions of dollars in ad revenue.

According to Reuters, Japanese regulators raised concerns last year after a surge of scam ads flooded Facebook and Instagram. These included fake investment schemes and AI-generated celebrity product endorsements. Meta feared Japan might require verification of all advertisers, which could reduce fraud but also cost the company revenue.

In response, Meta launched an enforcement campaign to remove scam ads. At the same time, internal documents show the company took steps to make problematic ads less “discoverable” to Japanese regulators. Staffers manipulated Meta’s publicly searchable Ad Library by identifying top keywords and celebrity names used to find fraudulent ads and systematically removing those ads from search results.

The tactic successfully hid some scam ads from regulators, giving the impression that Meta was more effective at controlling fraudulent content than it actually was. A memo noted that after the effort, fewer than 100 scam ads appeared in searches during the last week of the campaign. Japanese officials, including ruling Liberal Democratic Party lawmaker Takayuki Kobayashi, acknowledged the improvement.

While Meta argued the removal of scam ads was legitimate and part of broader anti-fraud measures, former employees described the efforts as “regulatory theater,” designed to give the company favorable optics without fully addressing the problem. Meta spokesperson Andy Stone maintained that advertiser verification is just one of many tools the company uses to reduce scams and that scam reports have decreased by 50% globally over the past year.

The documents also show that Meta’s “general global playbook” now incorporates similar tactics in other countries, including the United States, Europe, India, Australia, Brazil, and Thailand, to delay or limit mandatory advertiser verification.

Meta earns the majority of its revenue from advertising, and internal assessments indicated that unverified advertisers were disproportionately responsible for scam activity. While universal verification would reduce fraudulent ads, the company has resisted the cost of implementing it globally, estimating it would total around $2 billion and potentially reduce total revenue by up to 4.8%.

The documents reveal that Meta’s approach is largely “reactive only,” complying with stricter rules only when legally required, as seen in Taiwan and Singapore. In Taiwan, where new legislation mandated verification for financial advertisers, Meta verified accounts to avoid fines, resulting in a significant drop in scam ads locally. However, the company’s algorithms often redirected blocked ads to other markets, perpetuating a “whack-a-mole” problem.

Fraud across social media has surged worldwide, fueled by AI-generated ads, cryptocurrency payments, and organized criminal networks. Meta’s own data suggest that scams on its platforms cause billions in global consumer losses each year.

Despite these challenges, Meta has repeatedly sought to manage regulatory perception rather than fully implementing proactive solutions. Internal memos from Japan and other markets describe strategies to mimic regulator searches, manage the “prevalence perception” of scams, and stage verification rollouts to appear compliant.

Meta’s internal documents cast light on the tension between the company’s financial interests and the growing global demand for transparency and accountability. Regulators in Europe, the U.S., and Asia continue to examine Meta’s handling of fraudulent advertising, with some lawmakers calling for stricter enforcement and investigations.

A Meta spokesperson emphasized that the company remains committed to reducing scams on its platforms, stating that enforcement measures, verification programs, and other tools are part of ongoing efforts to protect users.

Deadly New Year fire at Swiss Alpine resort bar; dozens feared dead, 100 injured

0

CRANS-MONTANA, Switzerland — Dozens of people are feared dead, and around 100 others were injured after a massive fire tore through a crowded bar during New Year’s celebrations at the Swiss Alpine resort town of Crans-Montana early Thursday, authorities said.

The blaze erupted less than two hours after midnight at Le Constellation bar, transforming what had been a festive gathering into what officials described as one of the most devastating tragedies in Switzerland in recent years.

Valais Canton police commander Frédéric Gisler told reporters that “several tens of people” were presumed killed. However, authorities cautioned that an exact death toll could not yet be confirmed as victim identification and notifications of families are still ongoing.

“That will take time and for the time being, it is premature to give you a more precise figure,” Gisler said, adding that the local community is “devastated” by the incident.

Valais Canton attorney general Beatrice Pilloud said investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire, noting that experts have been unable to safely enter the heavily damaged structure. She stressed that authorities have ruled out any malicious intent.

“At no moment is there a question of any kind of attack,” Pilloud said.

Emergency response teams, including helicopters and ambulances, were dispatched to the scene to transport victims, some of whom are believed to be foreign nationals, according to officials.

Witnesses told French broadcaster BFMTV that moments before the fire, a male bartender lifted a female bartender onto his shoulders as she held a lit candle in a bottle. The flames allegedly spread rapidly, causing the wooden ceiling to collapse.

One witness described a deadly crowd surge as patrons attempted to flee from a basement nightclub via a narrow staircase and doorway. Another recounted scenes of people smashing windows to escape, with some suffering severe injuries, while frantic parents rushed to the area to check on their children. A witness likened the unfolding scene to a horror movie as he watched from across the street.

Fire officials said the blaze may have caused the release of combustible gases, triggering a violent ignition known among firefighters as a flashover or backdraft.

“This evening should have been a moment of celebration and coming together, but it turned into a nightmare,” said Mathias Reynard, head of the regional government of Valais Canton.

Hospitals in the region were quickly overwhelmed. Reynard said the intensive care unit and operating theater at the regional hospital reached full capacity due to the number of injured.

Authorities urged residents and visitors to exercise caution in the coming days, noting that medical resources remain stretched in the tourist-heavy region, which is currently busy with ski season activities.

Crans-Montana, located less than five kilometers from Sierre—site of a deadly 2012 bus crash that killed 28 people—is internationally known for hosting major ski and golf events. The resort is scheduled to host World Cup downhill races ahead of the Milan Cortina Olympics in February.

Swiss President Guy Parmelin expressed condolences in a social media post, saying the government’s “thoughts go to the victims, to the injured and their relatives.” Thursday marked Parmelin’s first day in office as Switzerland’s rotating president. Out of respect for the victims’ families, he postponed a traditional New Year’s address originally scheduled for Thursday afternoon, according to Swiss broadcasters SRF and RTS.

“We already sent a request for a paraffin test to the vice mayor’s partner. That’s one of the things we have to do,” pahayag ni Iloilo City Police chief Captain Jeffrey Delgado.

“As of now, we are looking at accidental firing as one of the possible angles. But our follow-up is still ongoing, so in case that there is other evidence for another angle, the investigation will still go on,” ayon kay Iloilo City Police Office spokesperson Major Shella Sangrines.

France moves toward Australia-style social media ban for children

PARIS — France is preparing to ban children from using social media platforms beginning in the 2026 academic year, as President Emmanuel Macron pushes to follow Australia’s world-first restrictions on minors’ access to online platforms.

A draft bill prohibiting children under 15 from using social media is expected to be submitted to the Conseil d’État for legal review in the coming days and could be debated in parliament early next year, according to reports by Le Monde and France Info. The government aims for the ban to take effect in September 2026.

The proposed legislation mirrors Australia’s recent move to bar under-16s from social media platforms, including Facebook, Snapchat, TikTok, and YouTube, which came into force in December. In France, the draft bill includes two key provisions: a nationwide ban on social media use for under-15s and a prohibition on mobile phones in high schools attended by students aged 15 to 18. Mobile phones are already banned in French primary and middle schools.

President Macron has repeatedly signaled his support for swift action, saying in recent weeks that momentum is building internationally following Australia’s decision. Speaking earlier this month at a public debate in Saint-Malo, Macron said excessive screen time was linked to declining academic performance and rising mental health problems among young people.

“The more screen time there is, the more school achievement drops … the more screen time there is, the more mental health problems go up,” Macron said. He likened unrestricted access to social media to allowing a child to drive a Formula One car without proper training.

The draft bill, cited by Le Monde, points to the “risks of excessive screen use by teenagers,” including exposure to inappropriate content, online bullying, and disrupted sleep patterns. It stresses the need to “protect future generations” from digital risks that threaten social cohesion and shared values.

Education unions are expected to review the proposed high school phone ban, while legal scrutiny by the Conseil d’État will assess the bill’s compatibility with French and European law.

Anne Le Hénanff, France’s minister responsible for digital development and artificial intelligence, said earlier this month that restricting social media access for under-15s is a government priority. She told Le Parisien that the bill would be “short and compatible with European law,” particularly the EU Digital Services Act (DSA), which targets hate speech, misinformation, and disinformation online.

France’s move comes amid broader international discussions on limiting children’s exposure to social media. Denmark and Norway are considering similar bans, while Malaysia has announced plans to restrict social media use for under-16s starting in 2026. In the United Kingdom, the Labour government has said it has not ruled out a ban, stressing that any decision must be based on robust evidence.

The proposed legislation also follows growing concern in France over the psychological effects of social media on children. A parliamentary inquiry into TikTok, released in September, described the platform as a “slow poison” for young users. The report warned that algorithm-driven content exposed children to an “ocean of harmful material.” TikTok has rejected the findings, saying it is being unfairly blamed for broader industry and societal challenges.

The parliamentary report recommended a complete ban on social media for children under 15 and proposed a night-time “digital curfew” for those aged 15 to 18, restricting access between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. The inquiry was launched after a 2024 lawsuit filed by seven French families accusing TikTok of exposing their children to content linked to self-harm and suicide.

The social media ban forms part of Macron’s broader policy push as he enters the final and politically challenging year of his presidency, with a divided parliament and unresolved budget negotiations for 2026 still looming.

Around the world, New Year traditions reflect culture, belief, and hope

As the world ushers in a new year, countries mark the occasion with traditions rooted in history, faith, and cultural symbolism, highlighting both diversity and shared aspirations for renewal and good fortune.

In Spain, the arrival of the new year is timed to the clock’s final 12 chimes, with revelers eating one grape for each stroke. The custom, observed nationwide, is believed to bring luck and prosperity for every month of the year.

In Japan, New Year’s Eve is marked by solemn reflection rather than revelry. Buddhist temples ring their bells 108 times in a ritual known as Joya no Kane, symbolizing the cleansing of earthly desires and human flaws as people prepare for spiritual renewal.

In the Philippines, the focus is on prosperity. Families wear polka-dotted clothing, display round fruits, and jingle coins in their pockets, embracing the belief that circular shapes attract wealth and abundance in the year ahead.

In Denmark, friendship and good fortune are celebrated through an unusual custom: smashing old plates at the doors of friends and relatives. A doorstep littered with broken dishes is considered a sign of strong relationships and good luck.

In Scotland, New Year’s Eve, or Hogmanay, features the tradition of “first-footing,” in which the first visitor to enter a home after midnight brings symbolic gifts such as coal, bread, or whisky—tokens of warmth, sustenance, and cheer for the coming year.

In Brazil, crowds dressed in white gather along the coast to jump seven waves at midnight while making wishes. The ritual honors Yemanjá, the goddess of the sea, and is believed to bring protection and blessings.

In parts of South Africa, particularly Johannesburg, the new year is welcomed by discarding old furniture and appliances, symbolizing the act of letting go of the past. Authorities have since regulated the practice due to safety concerns.

From quiet moments of reflection to vibrant public rituals, these traditions underscore a common global desire: to begin the new year with hope, renewal, and the promise of better days ahead.
