US seizes Venezuelan oil tanker, heightening regional tensions

WASHINGTON — The United States has taken control of a Venezuelan oil tanker in international waters, a move that could intensify already heightened tensions in Latin America and beyond.

President Donald Trump confirmed Wednesday that the vessel, named the Skipper, had been seized off the Venezuelan coast. “As you probably know, we’ve just seized a tanker on the coast of Venezuela,” he said. “Large tanker, very large, largest one ever seized, actually.”

Attorney General Pam Bondi posted a video on X showing armed personnel rappelling from a helicopter onto the ship, securing the deck with weapons drawn. She stated that the FBI, Homeland Security Investigations, and the US Coast Guard, “with support from the Department of War, executed a seizure warrant for a crude oil tanker used to transport sanctioned oil from Venezuela and Iran.”

Bondi said the tanker had been sanctioned for several years for its alleged role in an illicit oil shipping network supporting foreign terrorist organizations. “This seizure, completed off the coast of Venezuela, was conducted safely and securely—and our investigation alongside the Department of Homeland Security to prevent the transport of sanctioned oil continues,” she wrote.

A senior US official confirmed the operation occurred in international waters without incident or casualties among either US personnel or the tanker crew. The vessel was carrying Venezuelan crude and had previously been linked to Iranian oil, prompting a federal judge to issue a warrant for its seizure.

The tanker was reportedly en route to Cuba, but the oil’s final destination was intended to be in Asia after being brokered through Cuban intermediaries. The official added that further seizures may follow in the coming weeks as the US continues to apply pressure on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

Trump provided few details about the seizure. Asked about the fate of the oil, he replied, “We keep it, I guess,” and declined to comment on ownership of the tanker. He also said he had not recently spoken with Maduro.

Venezuela condemned the move in a statement, calling it “an act of international piracy.” The government accused the US of targeting Venezuela’s natural resources rather than addressing migration, drug trafficking, democracy, or human rights. “It has always been about our natural wealth, our oil, our energy, the resources that belong exclusively to the Venezuelan people,” the statement said.

Cuba, already facing widespread power outages due to its aging energy infrastructure, relies heavily on oil imports from countries like Venezuela, Russia, and Mexico. The Cuban government had no immediate comment on the seizure.

The tanker’s confiscation comes amid an ongoing US campaign of pressure against Venezuela, which has included deploying thousands of troops and a carrier strike group to the Caribbean, targeting suspected drug trafficking boats, and issuing repeated threats against Maduro. So far, US strikes have reportedly killed 87 people and destroyed 23 alleged drug vessels. Administration officials are reportedly preparing contingency plans in case Maduro is removed from power.

Maduro did not address the tanker’s seizure in a speech delivered Wednesday as the news circulated internationally.

This action highlights growing US-Venezuela tensions and underscores the potential for broader regional impacts, particularly for countries dependent on Venezuelan crude.

“[T]he DOJ dismissed the charges against Patidongan and Ellakim Patidongan as they have been admitted as state witnesses by the DOJ Witness Protection Program,” ayon sa panel ng mga prosecutors.

“Procedurally, as to that case, he is not automatically discharged,” dagdag niya.

Renewed Thailand Cambodia border clashes intensify, thousands flee homes

SURIN, Thailand —Renewed fighting along the Thailand Cambodia border continued without letup on Wednesday, displacing hundreds of thousands of residents as both militaries exchanged heavy fire across multiple provinces.

Associated Press teams positioned on the Thai side reported hearing outgoing artillery amid escalating hostilities rooted in longstanding territorial disputes. The clashes reignited after a skirmish on Sunday that wounded two Thai soldiers and effectively nullified a fragile ceasefire brokered in July through Malaysian mediation and pressure from United States President Donald Trump.

Trump said he expects to speak with both leaders on Thursday and expressed confidence he could again help halt the violence, although Washington had yet to make contact with Bangkok regarding any new ceasefire efforts.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said Thailand would continue defending its territory, while Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen vowed a strong counteroffensive. The latest round of fighting has killed more than a dozen people and forced the evacuation of about 400,000 residents in four Thai border provinces, Thai military spokesperson Rear Adm. Surasant Kongsiri said. Cambodia’s defense ministry reported more than 127,000 villagers evacuated on its side of the frontier.

Thailand said five soldiers had been killed and dozens wounded. Cambodia reported nine civilian deaths, including a baby, and 46 others injured.

Tensions also spilled into regional sports. Cambodia withdrew its delegation from the 33rd Southeast Asian Games, which opened Tuesday in Thailand, citing safety concerns raised by athletes’ families.

The July ceasefire, reaffirmed during an October meeting in Malaysia, had called for the removal of heavy weapons, improved coordination on clearing land mines and other measures to prevent renewed conflict. However, both countries continued trading accusations and intermittent fire across the border. Cambodia complained that 18 of its soldiers captured before the ceasefire had not been returned. Thailand accused Cambodia of laying new land mines that injured Thai troops.

The conflict intensified this week as Thailand deployed jet fighters to strike what it described as military targets. Cambodia positioned BM 21 rocket launchers with a range of up to 40 kilometers.

By mid afternoon Wednesday, the Thai army’s northeastern regional command reported that Cambodian forces had launched 79 BM 21 salvos totaling 3,160 rockets, used artillery 122 times and carried out 63 drone bomb attacks. A hospital in Surin province was evacuated after rockets landed about 500 meters away.

Thai forces also reported destroying a crane on a hill near the historic Preah Vihear temple, alleging it was being used for electronic surveillance and command operations. A curfew from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. was imposed in four districts of Sa Kaeo province under existing martial law orders.

In Surin city, around 550 evacuees sheltered in a gymnasium as the fighting continued. Among them was 37 year old farmer Thidarat Homhual, who worried about her livestock and pets left behind.

“We are behind the front line. We can live like this. It is OK,” she said. “But I want it to be over.”

“That the supply exceeded the agency’s two-month requirement, and a total of 116,046 rolls remained at the supplier’s custody without any agreement due to lack of policy on procurement of supplies and equipment,” ani COA.

Pope Leo XIV urges Europe’s inclusion in Ukraine peace talks, hits U.S. move to weaken alliance

ROME, Italy — Pope Leo XIV on Tuesday stressed that Europe must play a central role in any peace agreement on Ukraine, as he criticized what he described as efforts by the Trump administration to weaken the long-standing alliance between the United States and Europe.

Leo made the remarks after meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who is touring European capitals to secure continued support for Kyiv. The American pope said they discussed calls for a ceasefire and the Vatican’s ongoing efforts to help return Ukrainian children taken by Russian authorities.

When asked about the U.S. peace proposal and the apparent sidelining of European governments, Leo said Europe cannot be excluded from discussions about a war unfolding on its own continent.

“Seeking a peace agreement without including Europe in the talks is unrealistic, given the war is in Europe,” he said as he left his residence in Castel Gandolfo. “Security guarantees are being sought today and for the future. Europe must be part of this, and not everyone seems to understand that. But I believe there is a great opportunity for European leaders to unite and pursue a common solution.”

Zelenskyy earlier said the peace plan being discussed with the U.S. and European partners includes three documents, a 20-point framework, a second set of security guarantees, and a third plan for Ukraine’s reconstruction.

Leo was also asked about the U.S. peace plan, but his response focused on broader concerns about the Trump administration’s stance on the transatlantic alliance. The administration recently released its national security strategy questioning the U.S. commitment to Europe and expressing interest in improving relations with Russia.

Leo said the document would mark “a huge change” to what had long been considered a solid partnership between Washington and European capitals. He added that statements by U.S. President Donald Trump appear aimed at “trying to break apart what I think needs to be an alliance today and in the future.”

While some in the United States may support that position, “many others would see things in a different way,” he said.

The Vatican has maintained a stance of neutrality in Russia’s war on Ukraine while extending humanitarian assistance to what Pope Leo calls the “martyred” Ukrainian people. He has met Zelenskyy three times and has spoken by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Leo has repeatedly called for a ceasefire and urged Russia in particular to take steps that could help pave the way for peace. The Vatican has also worked to help secure the return of Ukrainian children taken to Russia, and last month Leo met with several children who had been brought back.
