NEW DELHI, India | October 12, 2026 | India’s opposition parties marched toward the Supreme Court on Monday to challenge a controversial voter list revision that they say threatens electoral fairness, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar amid escalating protests and mass detentions.

The march, led by opposition figures including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, followed demonstrations over the removal of more than 130 million names from draft electoral rolls during a nationwide verification exercise. Opposition parties allege that the process could disenfranchise eligible voters and benefit Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The Election Commission and the BJP deny political manipulation, saying the revision is intended to remove duplicate and ineligible registrations.

Gandhi called on opposition parties, civil society groups and members of the public to join the march and raise concerns about alleged electoral irregularities. Participants sought to bring their demands before the country’s highest court, including a call for Kumar to step down.

However, reports in Indian media said Chief Justice of India Surya Kant declined a request to meet opposition leaders, noting that the issues they wanted to discuss were already before the court. He indicated that the leaders could file a petition for consideration alongside existing proceedings.

Authorities imposed heightened security across central New Delhi, closing six metro stations and warning of traffic disruptions. The measures followed a weekend crackdown in which thousands of demonstrators were reportedly detained, including members of the youth-led Cockroach Janata Party, a movement that has joined calls for the election chief’s resignation.

The dispute centers on the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision, or SIR, of electoral rolls. Supporters of the exercise argue that accurate voter lists are necessary to protect election integrity, while critics warn that large-scale removals could exclude eligible citizens, particularly if people face difficulties proving their registration details or correcting errors.

The controversy has intensified scrutiny of the Election Commission, the constitutional body responsible for overseeing elections in India. Its independence is central to public confidence in a country with one of the world’s largest electorates. The dispute has also renewed debate over voter registration procedures and safeguards against the wrongful exclusion of eligible voters.

India has long conducted periodic revisions to keep voter lists current, but the scale and implementation of the latest exercise have become major political flashpoints. Opposition parties have framed the dispute as a test of democratic accountability and the institutions responsible for conducting elections.

The Election Commission maintains that the verification process is intended to identify duplicate and ineligible entries. Allegations of politically motivated removals have not, by themselves, established that the exercise was manipulated to favor the ruling party. The legal challenge and subsequent court proceedings will be important in determining how the disputed revisions are handled.

The latest march marks another escalation in the confrontation between opposition parties, election authorities and the government over electoral transparency. The central question is whether the revision can ensure accurate voter rolls without wrongly depriving eligible citizens of their right to vote.
