SAN FRANCISCO/WASHINGTON — Iranian state media has mocked U.S. President Donald Trump over a secret aircraft switch during his return from a NATO summit in Turkey, using memes that depict the president hiding inside a catering truck amid reports of a credible Iranian missile threat.
Reuters reported Thursday that Iranian state media circulated images showing Trump allegedly hiding in a catering truck, which was reportedly used to conceal his movement as U.S. security officials transferred him from Air Force One to a smaller military aircraft. The Iranian Embassy in South Africa also joined the online mockery.
The unusual security operation reportedly took place after the NATO summit in Ankara in July, when U.S. and Turkish intelligence identified what was considered a credible threat involving a possible missile attack against Trump’s aircraft.
According to Reuters, the U.S. Secret Service arranged for Trump to leave the presidential aircraft through a catering truck before transferring him to a C-32A military jet. Air Force One then continued separately with senior officials, staff and members of the press.
The operation was intended to make it more difficult for a potential attacker to determine which aircraft was carrying the president.
Trump has acknowledged the aircraft switch and said he followed the instructions of the Secret Service. He also suggested that the smaller aircraft could have faced greater danger if an adversary had determined that he was aboard.
The episode has since become a target of political satire and online memes, with the catering truck becoming the central image used by Iranian media to portray Trump as vulnerable to an Iranian attack.
The mocking comes as tensions between Washington and Tehran remain high. Iran has said there has been no progress toward reviving an interim peace agreement with the United States, while disagreements over the Strait of Hormuz continue to complicate diplomatic efforts.
The aircraft incident has also drawn attention in the United States because of the secrecy surrounding the operation. Members of the press traveling with Trump reportedly remained aboard the apparent presidential aircraft without being informed that the president had already been transferred.
Reuters noted that secret presidential travel arrangements have historical precedents, particularly when security threats are considered serious enough to warrant unusual measures.
The episode has now become part of the broader information battle between Iran and the United States, with Tehran’s state media using the incident to project an image of American vulnerability while Washington has emphasized the security threat that prompted the operation.
The exchange highlights how the confrontation between the two countries is unfolding not only through military and diplomatic channels but also through political messaging, social media and increasingly sophisticated information campaigns.
