TEHRAN, Iran – Iran on Friday began a week of state funeral ceremonies for former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, whose body was placed in state in Tehran as thousands of mourners gathered to pay their respects amid heightened security and regional tensions following his death earlier this year.

State media showed Khamenei’s flag-draped coffin lying in state as mourners filed past in solemn procession. Surrounding his coffin were several smaller coffins containing the remains of close relatives who were also killed in the same conflict, including one bearing the photograph of his young granddaughter, a poignant image that drew attention during the opening rites.

The ceremonies are expected to continue over several days in Iran and neighboring Iraq before concluding with Khamenei’s burial in his hometown of Mashhad. According to Reuters, funeral events are being held in Tehran, Qom, Najaf and Karbala, reflecting the late leader’s religious significance within the Shi’ite Muslim world. His burial is expected to take place following the completion of the week-long mourning ceremonies.

Senior Iranian officials, clerics and foreign delegations attended the opening ceremonies. Reuters reported that representatives from Russia, China and several regional allies were among those participating, while security was tightened throughout the capital as large crowds gathered to honor the late leader.

Iranian authorities have portrayed the funeral as a symbol of national unity and resilience following Khamenei’s death in a joint U.S.-Israeli airstrike earlier this year. The government has mobilized extensive logistical support for the ceremonies, which are expected to draw millions of mourners over the coming days.

Despite the official displays of solidarity, Reuters reported that Iran continues to grapple with economic difficulties and political divisions that have fueled public dissatisfaction in recent years. The funeral comes at a pivotal moment for the Islamic Republic as the country adjusts to a new phase of leadership under Khamenei’s successor while navigating ongoing regional security challenges.

Khamenei led Iran for nearly four decades, shaping the country’s domestic governance and foreign policy since succeeding Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989. His death marked one of the most significant developments in Iran’s modern political history and has intensified attention on the country’s future direction amid continuing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
