TAMPA, Florida | Thomas Markle Sr., the 82-year-old estranged father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, has been arrested in Florida and charged with possessing child sexual abuse material, following an investigation involving evidence recovered from storage units in California and reports concerning his former residence in the Philippines.

The U.S. Department of Justice announced on November 6 that Markle, whose full name is Thomas Wayne Markle, faces one federal count of possession of child pornography. Federal authorities said the charge stemmed from an investigation that led FBI agents to search two storage units in the Los Angeles area that Markle had rented since 2008.

According to a federal affidavit, investigators seized approximately 78 items, including slides, film negatives and books containing suspected child sexual abuse material. Some of the images allegedly depicted Markle with prepubescent girls. The FBI said the investigation began in October after authorities received information from an individual who had signed an affidavit concerning the discovery of suspected material among Markle’s possessions in the Philippines. A second individual subsequently provided information about his California storage units.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said the investigation involved cooperation among law enforcement personnel in the United States and their counterparts in the Philippines, Mexico and other jurisdictions. The materials recovered from the California storage units are now part of the federal case. Authorities have not established whether there were victims in the United States, according to earlier statements reported by The Associated Press.

Markle appeared before a federal magistrate judge in Tampa following his arrest. He was released pending further proceedings, subject to electronic monitoring, and the court ordered a psychiatric examination to determine whether he is capable of understanding the proceedings and assisting his lawyer. Reuters reported that he entered no plea and that his case is expected to proceed in California. If convicted, he faces a maximum statutory sentence of 20 years in federal prison.

The investigation also has links to the Philippines, where Markle had been living before returning to the United States following serious health complications. According to reports by CBS News and The Associated Press, his son, Thomas Markle Jr., discovered suspected child sexual abuse material among his father’s belongings at their former residence in Cebu City and turned personal items over to Philippine law enforcement. A Philippine National Police spokesperson confirmed to CBS News that an investigation was launched following the turnover.

Meghan previously said she was deeply distressed by the allegations and that she had been informed of troubling accusations against her father years earlier. In a statement released in October, she said a letter containing allegations had been sent to London’s Metropolitan Police and Royalty and Specialist Protection. She said her decision to keep her father away from her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, was intended to protect them. She also expressed hope that justice would be served and that the safety of children would remain the priority.

The estrangement between Meghan and her father became public in the weeks leading up to her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry at Windsor Castle. Thomas Markle did not attend the ceremony after controversy surrounding staged photographs of him preparing for the wedding, which were published by a British tabloid. Their relationship remained strained in the years that followed.

Markle previously denied possessing child sexual abuse material, describing the accusations as false in an interview with the Daily Mail. His arrest and federal charge do not constitute a conviction. The U.S. Department of Justice emphasized that he remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
