Robots can outrun us. Can they finally work like us?

BEIJING, China | Humanoid robots are proving they can run faster than the world’s fastest humans, but China’s latest robotics showcase is testing a more consequential question: whether these machines can perform the precise, unpredictable tasks required to work alongside people in factories, warehouses, restaurants and other real-world environments.

At the five-day World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, two humanoid robots surpassed Usain Bolt’s 9.58-second world record for the 100-meter sprint, while another robot completed the 400 meters faster than the current human record, according to Reuters. The athletic performances have drawn attention to the rapid advances in robotic speed, balance and power, but the competition’s less glamorous events may offer a better measure of whether humanoids are ready for commercial use.

The games feature 51 competitions, including 30 sports events and 21 scenario-based contests designed to simulate practical situations in factories, restaurants and emergency settings. More than 40% of the contests require robots to operate fully autonomously, placing greater emphasis on perception, decision-making and physical dexterity rather than speed alone.

Among the practical challenges are connecting cables, charging electric vehicles, moving materials and performing fine-motor tasks. Such activities may appear simple to humans, but they require a robot to identify an object, determine its position, adjust its grip and movement and respond when conditions are not exactly as expected.

That ability to cope with imperfections is becoming a central test for humanoid robotics. A cable may not be perfectly aligned, an object may be beyond its expected position, or a task may require several adjustments before it can be completed. Robots that can handle those variables without human intervention would be considerably more useful than machines capable only of performing carefully rehearsed demonstrations.

The distinction is increasingly important as China seeks to move humanoid robots from technology demonstrations into commercial production. At the World Robot Conference in Beijing this week, more than 300 companies displayed over 2,000 robotics products and unveiled more than 150 new products. Demonstrations included robots sorting parcels, assembling electronic products and performing household tasks.

China has already established itself as the world’s largest industrial robotics market. The International Federation of Robotics reported that China installed about 295,000 industrial robots in 2024, representing 54% of global installations. The country’s operational stock surpassed 2 million units, also the largest in the world.

The country has also made humanoid robots a strategic technology priority. China’s industrial policy has encouraged research, manufacturing and commercialization, while local governments have established robotics industry clusters and funding programs. Reuters reported in 2025 that Chinese government procurement of humanoid robots and related technologies rose sharply, from 4.7 million yuan in 2023 to 214 million yuan in 2024.

The rapid expansion has produced impressive technological milestones. Unitree Robotics, one of China’s leading humanoid robot manufacturers, said it had delivered about 18,000 bipedal humanoid robots across several models by July 2026. The company also recently unveiled a high-speed robot capable of reaching 12.66 meters per second.

But speed remains only one part of the challenge. Chinese robotics companies are under growing pressure to demonstrate that humanoid robots can generate real economic value rather than simply perform spectacular stunts. Industry executives and researchers have emphasized the need for robots that can operate reliably in actual workplaces, where conditions are rarely as controlled as those in laboratories or demonstrations.

The challenge extends to the robots’ “brains.” Unitree CEO Wang Xingxing said the industry could eventually reach a “ChatGPT moment” in which robots understand ordinary instructions and perform unfamiliar tasks, but he cautioned that such a breakthrough could still be two to 10 years away. Reuters reported that China accounted for more than 40,000 humanoid robot deliveries in the first half of 2026, although current humanoids remain less efficient than human workers in many real-world applications.

The World Humanoid Robot Games themselves are part of a broader effort to showcase China’s robotics capabilities. The first edition was held in Beijing in August 2025, when hundreds of teams competed in events ranging from football and boxing to cleaning and sorting. The 2026 edition has expanded substantially, with more than 2,000 robots competing across 51 events.

The rapid development is also becoming part of a wider global technology competition. The United States in July barred the import of new foreign-made humanoid and quadruped robots from China and other countries through restrictions imposed by the Federal Communications Commission, citing national security and domestic manufacturing concerns.

For now, the most meaningful measure of humanoid robotics may therefore have little to do with medals, sprint times or spectacular jumps. A robot that can run 100 meters faster than Usain Bolt makes for a remarkable headline. A robot that can recognize a misplaced cable, pick it up, align the connector correctly and complete the task without assistance may prove far more important to the future of work.

The question facing China’s rapidly expanding robotics industry is no longer simply whether machines can move like humans. It is whether they can reliably understand the messy physical world humans routinely navigate without thinking.
