KOLKATA, India | October 19, 2026 | At least 19 people have died and 25 others have been injured in a stampede at a crowded Durga Puja festival pavilion in Kolkata, eastern India, prompting arrests, a government investigation and a review of safety arrangements at other festival venues.
The incident occurred on the evening of October 17 at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pavilion in north Kolkata during Maha Saptami, the seventh day of the Hindu festival. Police said heavy crowds and rainfall contributed to the deadly crush as devotees gathered at the temporary worship site.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that seven people had been arrested in connection with the incident, while authorities moved to investigate possible failures in crowd management and security arrangements. A special investigation team was reportedly formed to examine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
The state government announced compensation of ₹25 lakh and a government job for the family of each person killed, along with ₹5 lakh for each injured victim and coverage of their medical expenses, according to India’s public broadcaster, News On AIR. Prime Minister Narendra Modi separately announced assistance of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for each deceased victim’s next of kin and ₹50,000 for each injured person.
Durga Puja is one of the most important Hindu festivals in West Bengal, celebrating the goddess Durga through religious ceremonies, cultural performances and elaborate temporary pavilions known as pandals. Kolkata hosts thousands of these installations each year, drawing large crowds of worshippers and visitors. The scale of the celebrations makes controlled entry and exit routes, crowd monitoring and emergency access essential to public safety.
The tragedy has renewed concerns about crowd management at mass gatherings in India, where deadly stampedes have occurred at religious events in the past. In 2013, more than 100 people died in a stampede near the Ratangarh temple in Madhya Pradesh. Such incidents have repeatedly highlighted the dangers of overcrowding, sudden crowd surges and inadequate safety arrangements.
Authorities have begun reviewing safety measures at other Durga Puja venues as the investigation continues. The findings are expected to help establish the circumstances that led to the Kolkata stampede and determine whether further action is warranted against those responsible.
