KATHMANDU | Nepal is facing a massive recovery effort after devastating flash floods killed at least 1,252 people and left more than 4,200 missing, while a 44-member South Korean disaster relief team has joined the continuing search for survivors and victims.
The disaster struck on August 26 after a collapse of glacial ice and rock near Nepal’s border with China unleashed a powerful surge of water, mud and debris through communities in the Himalayan region. Homes, roads, bridges and hydropower facilities were destroyed or buried.
According to Reuters, Nepal now estimates that about 20,000 homes will need to be rebuilt, including roughly 7,500 that were completely destroyed. Authorities are considering relocating some communities to safer areas because many surviving houses remain uninhabitable.
The search-and-rescue operation remains focused on remote areas and hydropower facilities where hundreds of workers are feared trapped. More than 9,300 Nepali Army personnel are involved, while international teams from India, China, South Korea and other countries are providing specialized assistance.
South Korea’s 44-member Korea Disaster Relief Team (KDRT) arrived in Kathmandu early Wednesday, September 2, aboard a South Korean Air Force KC-330 aircraft. The team includes personnel from South Korea’s Foreign Ministry, Korea International Cooperation Agency and National Fire Agency. It brought five search-and-rescue dogs, drones, thermal imaging equipment and devices designed to detect people trapped beneath debris.
The Korean team is also helping search for nine South Korean nationals who remain missing at the Upper Trishuli-1 hydropower project in Rasuwa District. A separate six-member Korean ground team has been conducting searches around the project using drones and helicopter support.
The humanitarian situation has become increasingly difficult as unidentified bodies continue to be recovered. The Associated Press reported that Nepalese authorities have resorted to temporary mass burials in Kathmandu while preserving photographs, personal information and DNA samples to facilitate later identification.
Families of missing people have gathered at a “wall of the missing” at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu, where photographs and information about missing relatives have been posted. Reuters reported that some families have also held symbolic funerals for relatives whose bodies have not been recovered.
The disaster has also affected neighboring Tibet, where Chinese authorities have reported 21 deaths and 541 people missing. China has reopened a critical road to the affected area and sent additional rescue and humanitarian equipment.
The catastrophe has renewed concerns about the growing vulnerability of Himalayan communities to climate-related disasters. The Associated Press reported that warmer temperatures are accelerating glacier melt and increasing the risks of flash floods, landslides and other hazards across the Hindu Kush Himalayas. Experts have pointed to earlier disasters, including the 2013 Kedarnath floods in India and the 2023 South Lhonak glacial lake outburst flood, as evidence of the region’s growing exposure.
For Nepal, the immediate priority remains the search for those still missing, while authorities begin planning the enormous task of rebuilding homes and critical infrastructure. The scale of the destruction means recovery is likely to extend well beyond the rescue operation, with relocation, reconstruction and stronger disaster-warning systems becoming central to Nepal’s response.
