BIRMINGHAM, England — Alexandra Eala captured her second WTA 125 singles title after rallying from a set down to defeat doubles partner Nikola Bartunkova in a tightly contested Birmingham Open final on Sunday.
The top-seeded Eala overcame a slow start to secure a 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 win in a match marked by extended baseline exchanges and momentum shifts in the deciding set. The victory adds another milestone to the rising career of the 21-year-old Filipino tennis player.
Eala’s latest title comes as she continues to build on a breakthrough season that saw her reach the semifinals of the Miami Open last year, a run that significantly raised her profile internationally and drew strong support from the global Filipino community.
She further cemented her standing on the WTA circuit with a first-round win over Clara Tauson at the U.S. Open, where she survived a dramatic third-set tiebreak to record her first main-draw victory at a Grand Slam.
The Filipino star, who trains at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Spain, also became the first woman representing the Philippines to win a WTA 125 title when she claimed the Guadalajara 125 Open earlier in her career.
Her consistent performances on tour have made her one of the most closely watched emerging players in women’s tennis, with increasing attention at major tournaments including the Australian Open, where she competed earlier this season.
With her Birmingham triumph, Eala further strengthens her position on the WTA circuit as she continues her push toward higher-tier tour events and main-draw success in Grand Slams.
