MANILA, Philippines — A powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck offshore Mindanao in southern Philippines on Monday morning, triggering a tsunami alert and prompting monitoring across coastal areas, international seismic agencies confirmed.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at 7:37 a.m. local time with an epicenter located approximately 24.7 kilometers west-southwest of Burias at a depth of about 35 kilometers.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami advisory/forecast, warning that hazardous sea-level fluctuations and possible tsunami waves could affect nearby coastal regions, including parts of the Philippines and Malaysia.
