WANGARATTA, Australia | October 19, 2026 | Independent Australian lawmaker Helen Haines is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria, prompting a joint counter-terrorism investigation as authorities work to establish the motive behind the incident.
Victoria Police said the 65-year-old member of parliament was hit by a Toyota LandCruiser on Murphy Street at about 3:30 p.m. local time on Monday. A 43-year-old man from nearby Tarrawingee was detained by a bystander before being taken into police custody. Officers recovered a knife from the vehicle, according to police statements reported by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and Australian Associated Press.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as an apparent deliberate attack but said investigators had not determined the motive. The national Joint Counter-Terrorism Team, involving the Australian Federal Police and the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, has joined state police in the investigation. Authorities have not established that the incident was terrorism-related, and it remains unclear whether the suspect and Haines knew each other.
Haines was taken to hospital before being flown to Melbourne for emergency treatment, according to ABC News. Her family issued a statement thanking bystanders, emergency personnel and police for their assistance and requested privacy while she receives medical care.
Albanese condemned political violence and praised Haines as a respected public servant. Opposition Leader Angus Taylor also denounced the incident, warning against allowing violent attacks on elected representatives to become normalized. Victoria Premier Ben Carroll expressed concern for Haines, her family and the Wangaratta community.
The incident has renewed concerns about threats against Australian politicians. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said reports of harassment and threatening behaviour against senior public officials rose from 951 in the preceding financial year to 1,067 in 2025-2026, according to Australian Associated Press.
Haines has represented the regional electorate of Indi as an independent since 2019. Before entering federal politics, she worked as a nurse, midwife and health researcher, serving communities in northeastern Victoria. The Australian Parliament’s official records confirm that she was re-elected in 2022 and 2025.
Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Police have not announced a final determination of the suspect’s motive, and further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
