World leaders back Palestinian statehood at UN, defying US and Israel

UNITED NATIONS. Dozens of world leaders voiced support for the recognition of a Palestinian state during a high-level meeting at the United Nations on Monday, a significant diplomatic shift nearly two years into the Gaza war that faces strong opposition from Israel and the United States.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France would formally recognize Palestine at the meeting he convened with Saudi Arabia, calling the move a step toward keeping the two-state solution alive. “We must pave the way for peace,” Macron said. “We must do everything within our power to preserve the very possibility of a two-state solution, Israel and Palestine living side by side in peace and security.” His remarks were met with lengthy applause.

The announcement comes as Israel’s government, described as the most far-right in its history, has rejected the establishment of a Palestinian state. Israeli forces continue their offensive in Gaza against Hamas following the October 7, 2023, attack that killed some 1,200 people in Israel. Local health authorities say more than 65,000 Palestinians have since been killed in Gaza, with Israel facing global criticism for its military conduct.

Israel launched a long-threatened ground assault on Gaza City in recent weeks, with no sign of a ceasefire on the horizon. Israeli officials have warned that international recognition of Palestine will undermine the prospects for peace.

Other leaders joined Macron in voicing support. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres all took part in the event. Sanchez, whose government recognized Palestine in 2024, told Reuters that momentum for recognition is growing. “Within Western society, there’s a large majority nowadays of countries that already recognize the Palestine state,” he said.

Macron outlined a framework for a renewed Palestinian Authority under which France would open an embassy, subject to reforms, a ceasefire, and the release of hostages held by Hamas. Ahead of this week’s UN General Assembly, Luxembourg, Malta, Belgium, and Monaco also joined the majority of UN member states that recognize Palestine.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, unable to attend after being denied a U.S. visa, urged nations via video link to extend their support. “We call for your support so that Palestine becomes a full-fledged member of the United Nations,” he said, promising reforms and elections within a year of a ceasefire.

Currently, Palestine holds observer status at the UN without voting rights. Full membership requires approval from the Security Council, where the United States holds veto power.

The United States and Israel boycotted Monday’s meeting. Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon said his government would consider its response after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu returns from his scheduled meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump on September 29. Netanyahu has repeatedly rejected calls to recognize a Palestinian state, insisting that the war against Hamas must continue until the group is destroyed.

While more European countries are moving to recognize Palestine, key states such as Germany and Italy have signaled reluctance. Germany, citing its historical responsibility for the Holocaust, insists recognition should follow a negotiated peace process, while Italy warned recognition could be “counterproductive.”

Israel is reportedly weighing the possible annexation of parts of the occupied West Bank as a response to the recognition efforts, despite risks of alienating Arab states such as the United Arab Emirates, which normalized ties with Israel under the 2020 Abraham Accords. The UAE has warned that annexation would undermine the agreement.

The United States has also cautioned against punitive measures targeting Israel, including potential consequences for France as host of the UN summit.

Bagyong Opong posibleng mabuo, banta sa Visayas at Luzon

MAYNILA.

THE HAGUE.

“The Prosecution charges the murders and attempted murders below, although the actual scale of victimization during the charged period was significantly greater, as reflected in the widespread nature of the attack,” ayon sa dokumentong nilagdaan ni ICC Deputy Prosecutor Mame Mandiaye Niang.

Ayon sa dokumento, “Together, Duterte and his co-perpetrators established a network of perpetrators comprising State actors such as law enforcement officers (including personnel from the PNP, PDEA, the NBI and the Bureau of Corrections (“BuCor”)), non-police assets and hitmen (together, “the National Network”), to operate in a similar manner as the DDS in conducting operations to kill alleged criminals in accordance with the Common Plan.”

That is one confirmation that they intend to burn the Palace… The capacity to burn the Palace is very difficult but the intent is there.”

“None of the protesters were seriously hurt… by seriously, I mean that they would have to be hospitalized. The police got hurt more than the protesters,” aniya.

Anti-corruption rally rocks Manila, booing of Chavit Singson highlights deep public distrust

0

MANILA, Philippines. Thousands of Filipinos demonstrated on Sunday in an anti-corruption rally that brought both unity and discontent, as some public figures attending were booed by parts of the crowd. The protest, sparked by allegations of massive kickbacks in flood-control projects, saw more than 33,000 peaceful participants, while a smaller group broke away into violent clashes with the police near the presidential palace.

At the “Trillion Peso March,” held at multiple locations including the EDSA Shrine and the People Power Monument, celebrities and politicians showed up in solidarity. However, among them, former Ilocos Sur governor Luis “Chavit” Singson was booed by protesters near Corinthian Gardens during the march along EDSA.

Celebrities such as Vice Ganda, Angel Aquino, Jodi Sta. Maria, Catriona Gray, and others also participated to lend voice to the outrage. Vice Ganda shouted strong words against corrupt officials, saying, “They’re animals.” “Father, forgive me, but f**k them. I know the mass has just ended, but Lord, forgive me because this is true. This is the language of all Filipinos whose money was stolen,” he said. He even called for the restoration of the death penalty for corrupt government officials.

Meanwhile, a faction of the protest turned violent near the presidential palace, where 49 people were arrested for throwing rocks, bottles, and fire bombs at officers, blocking roads and bridges. About 70 officers were injured. Police deployed tear gas to disperse the assailants, who vandalised property, including ransacking a budget inn, spraying graffiti, toppling posts and shattering glass. Schools in the vicinity were closed due to the disturbances.

Activists condemned what they described as misappropriation of public funds. Althea Trinidad, a student from Bulacan, said, “I feel bad that we wallow in poverty and we lose our homes, our lives, and our future while they rake in a big fortune from our taxes that pay for their luxury cars, foreign trip,s and bigger corporate transactions.” Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David called on citizens to act peacefully, stating, “Our purpose is not to destabilize but to strengthen our democracy.”

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has responded by establishing an independent commission to investigate anomalies in roughly 9,855 flood-control projects believed to involve over 545 billion pesos since mid-2022. Several contracts awarded to construction companies are now under scrutiny.

The booing of Chavit Singson reflects a deeper frustration among protesters not only with corruption but with the presence of figures viewed with distrust. Some attendees welcomed high-profile participants while others expressed that those seen as part of traditional power structures should not expect support without accountability.

Former Ilocos Sur governor Luis “Chavit” Singson is met with loud boos as he arrives at the anti-corruption rally in Manila, a reaction that underscores protesters’ frustration with figures long associated with traditional politics.

4 major Western nations recognize Palestinian state, Israel condemns move

LONDON. Britain, Canada, Australia, and Portugal formally recognised a Palestinian state on Sunday, a move intended to revive hopes for a two-state solution amid the devastating war in Gaza, drawing a furious response from Israel.

The four Western nations, traditionally close allies of Israel, joined more than 140 countries worldwide that support Palestinians’ aspirations for an independent homeland in the occupied territories. Britain’s decision carried particular weight given its historic role in Israel’s creation following World War Two.

“Today, to revive the hope of peace for the Palestinians and Israelis, and a two-state solution, the United Kingdom formally recognises the State of Palestine,” said Prime Minister Keir Starmer. He added: “The man-made humanitarian crisis in Gaza reaches new depths. The Israeli government’s relentless and increasing bombardment of Gaza, the offensive of recent weeks, the starvation and devastation are utterly intolerable.”

France and other nations are expected to follow suit this week during the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sharply condemned the decision. “I have a clear message to those leaders who recognise a Palestinian state after the horrific massacre of October 7: You are giving a huge reward to terrorism. And I have another message for you: It will not happen. A Palestinian state will not be established west of the Jordan River,” he said, referring to Hamas’ 2023 attack that killed 1,200 people and led to 251 hostages being taken, according to Israeli figures.

In retaliation, Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has killed more than 65,000 Palestinians, mostly civilians, according to local health authorities. The offensive has also displaced much of the population, spread famine, and reduced large swathes of Gaza to rubble.

Palestinian leaders and communities welcomed the decision. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said the recognition would help pave the way for the “State of Palestine to live side by side with the State of Israel in security, peace, and good neighbourliness.” Husam Zomlot, head of the Palestinian Mission to the UK, called the announcement “a moment when the UK Prime Minister and the British government, on behalf of their people, stand and say: ‘We must correct history, we must right the wrongs’.”

Hamas also welcomed the step but said it must be accompanied by “practical measures” to end the war in Gaza and prevent Israel from annexing the West Bank.

In Canada, Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that the recognition was aimed at strengthening voices for peaceful coexistence and the defeat of Hamas. “This in no way legitimises terrorism, nor is it any reward for it,” he stressed. Portugal’s Foreign Affairs Minister Paulo Rangel described the decision as a “fundamental line of Portuguese foreign policy” and reiterated that “a ceasefire is urgent.”

Public opinion remains divided. Some Londoners praised the move as a step toward peace, while others criticised it as premature. Mandy Damari, the British mother of released British-Israeli hostage Emily Damari, told Reuters that Prime Minister Starmer was “under a two-state delusion,” arguing that the recognition rewarded Hamas. In contrast, hostages remain in captivity and the war continues.

The United States, Israel’s closest ally, has yet to comment on the recognition by three of its allies. Former President Donald Trump has previously opposed such a move. Meanwhile, Israeli Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said he would push for Israel to apply sovereignty over parts of the West Bank, which would amount to de facto annexation of territory seized in the 1967 war.

Britain’s involvement in the region dates back to 1917, when its troops captured Jerusalem from the Ottoman Empire, and the League of Nations later granted Britain the mandate to administer Palestine. Now, over a century later, London’s recognition of Palestinian statehood signals a dramatic shift in Western diplomatic positioning, setting the stage for heated debates at the UN this week.

Basta may ebidensya, wala kaming sasantuhin,” ani Lacson.

MAYNILA.

Israel intensifies Gaza City assault, 60 Palestinians reported killed

JERUSALEM. Israel’s military continued its assault on Gaza City and the wider Gaza Strip on Saturday, dismantling underground shafts and booby-trapped structures in operations that killed at least 60 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities.

The offensive comes ahead of Monday’s expected move by 10 countries, including Australia, Belgium, Britain, and Canada, to formally recognise an independent Palestinian state, just before the annual U.N. General Assembly leaders’ summit.

Israel’s demolition campaign targeting high-rise buildings in Gaza City has escalated in recent days, alongside a ground assault. Israeli forces, which control the city’s eastern suburbs, have been striking the Sheikh Radwan and Tel Al-Hawa districts, positions that could allow them to advance toward central and western Gaza City, where most residents are sheltering.

The military estimates it has demolished up to 20 tower blocks in Gaza City over the past two weeks and believes more than 500,000 people have left the city since early September, according to Israeli media. Hamas disputes those figures, claiming fewer than 300,000 have left and around 900,000 remain, including Israeli hostages.

Hamas’ military wing earlier released an image montage of hostages on Telegram, warning their lives were at risk due to Israel’s operations. The group also said that since August 11, Israel has destroyed or damaged more than 1,800 residential buildings in Gaza City and demolished over 13,000 tents sheltering displaced families.

Nearly two years of conflict have left more than 65,000 Palestinians dead, widespread famine, and the destruction of most of Gaza’s infrastructure, according to Gaza health officials. Israel disputes these accounts, arguing that the hunger crisis has been overstated and placing responsibility on Hamas.

The Israeli military body COGAT, which oversees aid into Gaza, said Hamas fired at U.N. teams on Saturday and blocked the opening of a new humanitarian route in the southern Gaza Strip. Hamas rejected the claims, saying that criminal gangs with protection from Israeli firepower are looting aid convoys. The United Nations has not yet commented.

“We have been calling day and night (for) U.N. organizations to carry out their humanitarian and relief work,” a senior Hamas media official told Reuters.

The war began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led attacks in Israel killed 1,200 people and took 251 hostages. Of those, 48 remain in Gaza, with around 20 believed to be alive.
