Tony Bennett: Legendary New York crooner dies aged 96

0

NEW YORK. Tony Bennett, the masterful stylist of American musical standards, passed away at the age of 96, just two weeks shy of his birthday.

The legendary singer, known for his devotion to classic American songs and his ability to create new standards like “I Left My Heart In San Francisco,” enjoyed a career spanning decades, garnering admiration from fellow artists like Frank Sinatra to Lady Gaga.

His publicist, Sylvia Weiner, confirmed the news of his death to The Associated Press, stating that he died in his hometown of New York. While no specific cause was mentioned, it was known that Bennett had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2016.

Bennett was regarded as one of the last great saloon singers of the mid-20th century, and he often expressed that his ambition was to create a hit catalog rather than just hit records. Throughout his career, he released more than 70 albums, earning him 19 competitive Grammy Awards, most of which were achieved after he turned 60. His exceptional voice and interpretation of songs endeared him to fans and peers alike.

Unlike his friend and mentor, Frank Sinatra, Bennett chose to interpret songs rather than embody them. His music selections ranged from the Gershwins and Cole Porter to Irving Berlin and Jerome Kern, and he had a unique ability to caress a ballad or brighten up-tempo numbers.

Bennett’s ability to endure and reinvent himself allowed him to gain new fans and collaborate with younger artists, some young enough to be his grandchildren. Notably, his duets project with Lady Gaga, “Cheek to Cheek,” achieved No. 1 status on the Billboard 200 chart in 2014 when Bennett was 88 years old. This success was followed by another chart-topping album, “Duets II,” featuring contemporary stars like Gaga, Carrie Underwood, and Amy Winehouse.

Throughout his career, Bennett tirelessly championed the Great American Songbook, believing that the songs of composers like Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, and Jerome Kern would never fade away.

One of Bennett’s most famous contributions came from two unknown songwriters, George Cory and Douglass Cross, who provided him with his signature song, “I Left My Heart In San Francisco,” during a career lull in the early 1960s. The song became a massive hit, earning Bennett his first two Grammy Awards.

In addition to his musical accomplishments, Bennett actively supported the Civil Rights Movement, and he joined Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1965 Selma-to-Montgomery voting rights march and performed for the protesters.

Bennett’s life and career were filled with challenges and triumphs, but his passion for music and art remained unwavering. Survived by his wife Susan, daughters Johanna and Antonia, sons Danny and Dae, and nine grandchildren, Tony Bennett leaves behind a legacy of timeless music and artistic brilliance.

California Science Center starts complex process to display Space Shuttle Endeavour vertically

LOS ANGELES. A highly technical process began Thursday in Los Angeles to put NASA’s retired Space Shuttle Endeavour on permanent display in the vertical launch position complete with external tank and two solid rocket boosters.

Workers used a crane to hoist the bottom segments of the boosters into the California Science Center’s future Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center, which is currently under construction in Exposition Park.

The segments, called aft skirts, had to be precisely positioned so that the entire assembly can be stacked properly. Officials say it will be the first time the procedure has been done outside of a NASA facility.

The 20-story-tall display will stand atop an 1,800-ton (1,633-metric ton) concrete slab supported by six so-called base isolators to protect Endeavour from earthquakes.

Endeavour was built as a replacement for the destroyed Space Shuttle Challenger and flew 25 missions between 1992 and 2011.

When NASA’s shuttles were retired, Endeavour was flown to California atop NASA’s special Boeing 747 shuttle carrier in 2012, drawing crowds as it flew over locations in the state associated with the space program.

After landing at Los Angeles International Airport, the shuttle was placed on a special trailer and then created a sensation as it was inched through tight city streets to the California Science Center over several days.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the Air and Space Center was held last year on the 11th anniversary of Endeavour’s final return from space.

Dec. 31 will be the last chance to see Endeavour as it has been displayed — horizontally in the landing position — for years since arrival at the California Science Center.

The shuttle will be moved across Exposition Park and lifted by a crane to be intricately mated to the external tank. Construction of the Air and Space Center will be completed around the full shuttle stack.

The center’s foundation has raised nearly $350 million of the $400 million goal for the project.

Two planets sharing same orbit around their star? Astronomers find strongest evidence yet

0

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. Astronomers reported Wednesday the discovery of what could be two planets sharing the same orbit around their star.

They said it’s the strongest evidence yet of this bizarre cosmic pairing, long suspected but never proven.

Using a telescope in Chile, the Spanish-led team spotted a cloud of debris in the same orbit as an already confirmed planet circling this star, 370 light-years away in the constellation Centaurus. They suspect it’s either a planet in formation or remnants of a planet that once was.

Asteroids are known to accompany planets around their star — for example, Jupiter and its so-called Trojan asteroids. But planets in the same orbit “have so far been like unicorns,” noted study co-author Jorge Lillo-Box of Madrid’s Center for Astrobiology.

“They are allowed to exist by theory, but no one has ever detected them,” he said in a statement.

The scientists said they will need to wait until 2026 in order to properly track the two objects around the star known as PDS 70.

The confirmed planet with the suspected tagalong takes 119 years to complete a lap. A gas giant, it’s three times the size of Jupiter. Another gas giant is known to circle this star, albeit from a much greater distance.

Lead author Olga Balsalobre-Ruza of the Center for Astrobiology in Madrid, said the findings, published in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics, are “the first evidence” that such double worlds might exist.

“We can imagine that a planet can share its orbit with thousands of asteroids as in the case of Jupiter, but it is mind-blowing to me that planets could share the same orbit,” she said in a statement.

Duterte, Dela Rosa advised to limit travel amid ICC probe

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla has advised Sen. Ronald dela Rosa and former President Rodrigo Duterte to not fly to countries where the International Criminal Court (ICC) can “influence the judicial system” amid its push to investigate the Duterte administration’s drug war.

Remulla offered the advice when asked during a briefing on efforts of the executive branch to protect dela Rosa, who served as the Philippine National Police chief during the Duterte administration.

Remulla added that the same advice would be extended to the former president.

“They are citizens of the Republic who also need our protection. So we have to advise them properly,” he explained.

The justice chief noted that they would particularly advise against traveling to European countries.

In a statement, Solicitor General Menardo Guevarra said the ICC appeals chamber’s “failure to rule on jurisdiction” will be “a powerful argument for any person who may be investigated or charged” by the tribunal.

The government has long insisted that the ICC could no longer exercise jurisdiction over the country since the Philippines withdrew from the Rome Statute in 2019. Guevarra said that although the majority of the appeals chamber did not tackle the issue, two judges were of the view that the international court had already lost jurisdiction.

Meanwhile, Senator Francis Tolentino told reporters that the Senate committee on justice and human rights, which he chairs, will hear proposed resolutions seeking to defend Dela Rosa and Duterte from the ICC probe.

Tolentino said he will talk to the Senate leadership about the schedule upon the resumption of session next week.

Even before the ICC disclosed its decision rejecting the Philippine government’s plea, Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri also said they would protect dela Rosa unless a local court issues an arrest warrant against him.

“If there’s no local warrant for his arrest, then he should be accorded the respect of a senator of the republic and be protected as such,” Zubiri said.

Magsasaka patay sa kidlat, barangay chairman sugatan sa Quezon

TAYABAS CITY, Quezon.

International probe into Philippines ‘war on drugs’ resumes

THE HAGUE, Netherlands. Appeals judges at the International Criminal Court ruled Tuesday that an investigation into the Philippines’ deadly “war on drugs” can resume, rejecting Manila’s objections to the case going ahead at the global court.

The court’s investigation was suspended in late 2021 after the Philippines said it was already probing the same allegations and argued that the ICC — a court of last resort — therefore didn’t have jurisdiction.

The Philippines launched its appeal after judges in January agreed with the court’s chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, that deferring the investigation to Manila was “not warranted.” At the time, judges ruled that the domestic proceedings did not amount to “tangible, concrete and progressive investigative steps in a way that would sufficiently mirror the court’s investigation.”

At a hearing Tuesday, Presiding Judge Marc Perrin de Brichambaut said the five-judge appeals panel, in a majority decision, agreed and rejected the Philippines’ appeal.

More than 6,000 suspects, most of them people who lived in poverty, have been killed in the crackdown on drug crime, according to government pronouncements. Human rights groups say the death toll is considerably higher and should include many unsolved killings by motorcycle-riding gunmen who may have been deployed by police.

Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has defended the crackdown as “lawfully directed against drug lords and pushers who have for many years destroyed the present generation, especially the youth.”

Duterte withdrew the Philippines from The Hague-based court in 2019 in a move rights activists said was an attempt to evade accountability and prevent an international probe into the killings in his campaign against illegal drugs. However, the ICC still has jurisdiction over alleged crimes committed when the country was still a member state of the court.

The current Philippine president, Ferdinand Marcos Jr., said last year that Manila has no plan to rejoin the ICC, a decision that supported his predecessor’s stance but rejects the wishes of human rights activists.

“The ICC appeals chamber decision rejects Philippine government claims that the ICC should not investigate in the country,” said Bryony Lau, deputy Asia director at Human Rights Watch. “President Marcos should back up his stated commitment to human rights by cooperating with the ICC prosecutor’s inquiry.”
