Holy Week with your kids at home

As parents, you may be feeling overwhelmed with the balancing act of working from home, educating your children, and maintaining a faith filled family life, while sheltering in place. Children need consistency in their lives. Through daily prayer, music and creative experiences, we can encourage reflection and preparation. Here are some tips and resources to help you and your family reflect and prepare during Holy Week.

Daily Holy Week opening prayer and song

Start each day with this opening “A Lenten Prayer” from Loyola Press. Then, listen to and sing Janet Vogt’s “In This Reconciliation” together.

Preparing for Palm Sunday

Catechist Cafe offers age appropriate songs, videos, scripture passages, discussion questions and activities to use together as a family, as you prepare for a Palm Sunday livestreamed services. Separate activities are offered based on age groups (Preschool- Grade 3 and Grade 4+)

For children who are preparing for First Communion

Although our celebrations may be delayed due to shelter in place requirements, Holy Week is a good time to continue First Communion preparation and explore the theme of reconciliation. For English speakers, Hi God: First Communion is a wonderful resource to get you started.

Holy Week art activities for children

Children learn by doing. They actively engage in creative art expression. For children ages 3–6, you can help your child create a ‘handprint book’ that has a page for each day of Holy Week, along with Scripture that is simplified for your child’s understanding. Here are some ideas from CatholicIcing.com

For children ages 7–10, making a banner or a wreath using symbols for the days of Holy Week helps them to understand the timeline of events and how we pray at each of these times. “Wee Little Miracles” offers a great guide on this. You can also find more information and other ideas in this wonderful booklet from Practical Resources for Church (PRC).

Stations of the Cross resources

Reviewing and praying the Stations of the Cross with your children at home is an excellent preparation for Good Friday.

The Way of the Cross for Children offers responses, Bible readings, reflections, artwork and songs for each of the 14 stations — all in a format that’s easy for children to follow. Additionally, coloring pages for the Stations of the Cross keep kids engaged. Download this resource for ages 3–6. Download this one for ages 7 and up.

Daily Holy Week Closing Prayer and Song

Finally, end each day with the “A Lenten Prayer” and a song at bedtime. Listen to and reflect on “Walk on with Jesus” by Mark Friedman and Janet Vogt.

Family prayer is a great way to foster community, peace and love in the home during these trying times. We hope these resources, prayers and music selections help your children to learn about Holy Week, while deepening their relationship with Jesus and with you. (OCP)

WHO celebrates 75th anniversary, calls for health equity in face of unprecedented threats

Director-General calls on governments and leaders to take action to protect and invest in health and care workers who are at the forefront of the response to health and climate emergencie

On 7 April 2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) will mark its 75th anniversary, along with its 194 Member States and other partners, by calling for a renewed drive for health equity.

Seventy-five years ago, in the aftermath of the deadliest and most destructive war in human history, the Constitution of the World Health Organization came into force: a treaty between the nations of the world, who recognized that health was not only a fundamental human right, but also fundamental to peace and security.

Over the past seven and a half decades, there has been extraordinary progress in protecting people from diseases and destruction, including smallpox eradication, reducing the incidence of polio by 99%, saving millions of lives through childhood immunization, declines in maternal mortality and improving health and well-being for millions more.

“The history of WHO demonstrates what is possible when nations come together for a common purpose,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. “We have much to be proud of, but much work to do to realize our founding vision of the highest attainable standard of health for all people. We continue to face vast inequities in access to health services, major gaps in the world’s defenses against health emergencies, and threats from health harming products and the climate crisis. We can only meet these global challenges with global cooperation.”

To meet these challenges, WHO is urging countries to take urgent action to protect, support and expand the health workforce as a strategic priority. Investments in education, skills and decent jobs for health need to be prioritized to meet the rapidly growing demand for health and avert a projected shortage of 10 million health workers by 2030; primarily in low- and middle-income countries.

A global education programme on basic emergency care targeting 25% of nurses and midwives from 25 low- and middle-income countries by the end of 2025 was also recently announced by WHO. This 25x25x25 emergency care programme will provide nurses and midwives with the skills and competencies to make a major difference in saving lives and reducing disabilities.

Looking forward to the next 75 years and close to the turn of the next century, a renewed commitment to health equity will be the key to addressing future health challenges. In the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic, WHO’s roadmap to recovery includes an urgent paradigm shift towards promoting health and well-being and preventing disease by addressing its root causes and creating the conditions for health to thrive. WHO is urging countries to provide health by prioritizing primary health care as the foundation of universal health coverage.

The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that protecting health is fundamental to our economies, societies, security and stability. Learning from the worst pandemic in recent history, WHO stands ready to support the countries of the world as they negotiate a pandemic accord, the revision of the International Health Regulations and other financial, governance and operational initiatives to prepare the world for future pandemics.

Over the past five years, WHO has invested in science and digital health, creating a Science Division led by the Organization’s first Chief Scientist. This has come at a time when science is under sustained attack every day. Countries must protect the public from misinformation and disinformation. The future of health depends on how well we power health through science, research, innovation, data, digital technologies, and partnerships.

King Charles III’s coronation: Plans for the centuries-old ceremony

He’s been Britain’s reigning monarch since September last year, but King Charles III and his Queen Consort, Camilla, will be formally crowned this spring in a coronation ceremony steeped in centuries of tradition — with a few small tweaks expected for the modern age.

King Charles III will officially be crowned on Saturday, May 6, alongside Camilla. The date was agreed upon by the U.K. government, the Church of England and the royal household.

To celebrate, people in the U.K. will be given a public holiday, though because the coronation will take place on a Saturday, the national holiday will be on Monday, May 8.

Celebratory lunches will be held across the U.K. and other Commonwealth countries that weekend, and on May 7, a concert will be performed at Windsor Castle.

The coronation will take place at Westminster Abbey, where the ceremony has been held for the last 900 years. It will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby.

King Charles and Camilla will travel to Westminster Abbey from Buckingham Palace as part of “The King’s Procession.” After the service, they will return to Buckingham Palace in another procession, this time joined by other members of the royal family, known as “The Coronation Procession.”

Once they arrive at Buckingham Palace, the senior members of the royal family will make an appearance on the balcony.

Coronation ceremonies came out of an historic need to bring stability to European monarchies amid competing claims to their thrones, as well as traditions of church involvement in the state. They do not take place immediately after the death of the previous monarch to allow time for the country to grieve. The ceremony is largely religious, and it does not bring King Charles any further privileges as the monarch, which he has been since the moment his mother died.

British coronations involve an Anglican Church service.

Once inside the Abbey, traditionally the events take place as follows: the Recognition, the Coronation Oath, the Anointing, the Investiture and the Enthronement and Homage.

During the Recognition, the monarch is presented to the people in attendance. During the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, Charles’ mother, in 1953, trumpets sounded after she was presented to each side of the abbey, and people exclaimed “God save the Queen.”

The only part of the coronation ceremony that is required by law is the Coronation Oath. The exact wording of the oath has varied over the centuries. Queen Elizabeth II swore to rule the U.K. and Commonwealth countries according to law, exercise justice with mercy and maintain the Church of England. It is expected that King Charles’ oath will be similar, though he is expected to recognize all faiths.

After the oath, Charles is expected to be anointed with holy oil by the Archbishop of Canterbury, who will pour the oil onto a spoon and anoint Charles’ hands, head and breast. Then, Charles will be given the royal robe, the orb, the coronation ring, the sceptre and the rod of his position. St. Edward’s Crown will be placed on his head.

After King Charles is crowned, his Queen Consort, Camilla, will be crowned, before the final procession back to Buckingham Palace.

The coronation is paid for by the U.K. government because it is a state event.

Who will go to the coronation?

The coronation is a state occasion, which means the government controls the guest list.

In addition to the Royal Family, those attending will include the prime minister, representatives from the Houses of Parliament, heads of state, and other royals from around the world.

More than 8,000 guests attended Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation, but Westminster Abbey had to be closed for five months to allow extra seating to be built.

Its normal capacity is about 2,200 and it seems likely this will be the maximum number on this occasion.

The event will be attended by heads of state from around the world, including from Ireland, France, Spain, Belgium, Japan, Hungary and Monaco. All three presidents of the EU – Ursula von der Leyen, Roberta Metsola and Charles Michel – will be there.

President Marcos of the Philippies will travel to London to witness the coronation while U.S President Joe Biden is planning on skipping the monumental event, the Washington post reported.

“Kung sa sine natin titingnan ito, analogy to ng movie, si Marvin was a director, producer of the props and casting director.

In the same briefing, Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr. said Miranda is the “missing vital link” and “one of the main conspirators” behind the assassination of Degamo, based on the testimonies of the other suspects who were either arrested or surrendered.

Base sa rebelasyon at confessions ng arrested suspects, including a discharged former AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines) member who had direct participation in the killing of Gov.

“We are now at the tail end of our quest for justice, and hunt for the masterminds behind the death of Gov. Degamo and eight others and wounding of many more victims and with the arrest of Marvin Miranda, we are certain that the pieces of the puzzle are almost complete and we can clearly picture out what really transpired before, during and after the brazen attack in Pamplona, Negros Oriental which will eventually help us in unmasking and identifying the main conspirators and masterminds behind the gruesome murder of Gov.

“Kumbaga sa pulis, case closed na ito, prosecution na tayo pagkatapos, but we know who masterminded it. (In police terms, this case is already closed. We are now in the prosecution phase but we know who masterminded it),” ayon kay Remulla.

“He can answer questions in the preliminary investigation. That will make our job easier and it will make it easier for all of us Filipinos na we can remove uncertainty,” ito ang sagot ni Remulla noong tanungin kung agad na dadakipin si Teves sa sandaling dumating ito sa bansa.

Bukod kay Miranda, may 10 pang suspek na nasa kustodiya ng NBI na sina Osmundo Rivero, Joven Javier, Joric Labrador, Benjie Rodriguez, Winrich Isturis, Dahniel Lora, Rommel Pattaguan, John Louis Gonyon, Eulogio Gonyon Jr., at Rogelio Antipolo Jr.

“We have accounted for all those directly involved in the killing of Governor Degamo and eight of the 11 have been or will be charged with multiple murder, frustrated murder as well as attempted murder. In addition, some of the suspects will be charged with illegal possession of firearms and explosives,” dagdag niya.

Hunt vs. ‘spotters’

“We are confident that with all the pieces of evidence at hand our pursuit of justice is within our sight.

“This is humanity’s crew,” ayon kay NASA Administrator Bill Nelson.

“This is a big day. We have a lot to celebrate and it’s so much more than the four names that have been announced,” ayon kay Glover.

0

Your guide to Holy Week

Pope Francis reflects on the faith Jesus placed in God, abandoning himself in his moment of pain because he knew that God’s reason would save him.

Catholics have honored the last week of Jesus’ life since the Apostles. Holy Week, stretching from Palm Sunday to Holy Saturday, is a time to reflect on all that Jesus suffered for us. It is a time to worship him as our king, and remember the light he brings to a dark world.

In the first century, the early Christians celebrated every Sunday in commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus. By the second century, they established a particular day for the celebration of the resurrection, which was connected to the Jewish Passover.

Their observance began at sundown on Saturday evening. They called it the Night of the Great Vigil, a time of remembrance and expectation that lasted throughout the night so they could sing “Alleluia” at dawn on Easter morning. It was during the Night of the Great Vigil that new Christians were received into the Church.

By the fourth century, it became customary for people to make pilgrimages to Jerusalem to celebrate what was called the “Great Week,” which included Holy Thursday, Good Friday, the Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday. The diary of a woman named Egeria in 381 contains the first accounts of the special rites, prayers and devotions that took place in Jerusalem during the Great Week.

Over time, the practice of observing Holy Week spread throughout the Christian world, with prayers, historical re-enactments and special liturgies. During the Middle Ages, the celebration of the Easter Vigil gradually fell out of practice. The important days of the week were Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

In 1955, the Vatican re-established the Easter Vigil as an important part of Holy Week observances.

During the Second Vatican Council (1962-65), the bishops called for the restoration of the early Christian rituals for receiving new Christians into the Church at the Easter Vigil. In 1988, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults was issued.

Today, Easter Vigil with the Easter fire, the lighting of the paschal candle, the reading of salvation history, the celebration of the sacraments of initiation for catechumens and renewal of baptismal promises for the faithful is once again an integral part of Holy Week celebrations. Pope at Mass: Jesus turns our hearts of stone to hearts of flesh. In his Palm Sunday Mass, Pope Francis reflects on the faith Jesus placed in God, abandoning himself in his moment of pain because he knew that God’s reason would save him.

Tips for leaving your dog home alone this Holy Week

0

Our dogs would never have to be left home alone. For those times when it’s unavoidable, here’s a list of do’s and don’ts of leaving dogs home alone.

In a perfect world, our dogs would never have to be left home alone. Our dogs certainly lay on the guilt when we grab our briefcase, car keys, purse and other items when we’re dashing out the door to participate in Visita Iglesia. They give us the puppy-dog eyes, they whine at the door, they race around our legs as if to say, “Don’t leave us!”

You know you won’t be gone that long, but your dog doesn’t know that and frankly, for your dog whether you’re gone five minutes or five hours it’s all the same–you’re gone, they don’t want you gone.

These are a couple of the real-world reasons we have to leave our dogs alone: work, going out with friends, running errands, etc. What’s a pet parent to do? For those times, here’s a list of do’s and don’ts of leaving dogs home alone.

How to leave your dog home alone

1. Give your dog a safe space. For some dogs, a crate is their safe space, for others, having the run of the house is best. No matter whether your dog is in a crate or not, you will want to check that there are no hazards in their path—dangerous foods, electrical cords, or places a collar can get caught.

2. Leave water and a temperature-controlled room. Whether you’re leaving your dog alone in the summer or the winter, make sure the temperature in the room is sufficient to keep them comfortable. A dog in a crate needs to be able to have a cool breeze during warm months as they can’t move to a cooler location.

If you’re going to be gone a long time and you’re worried they will drink too much and have to go outdoors, do ask a friend or hire a pet sitter to walk them.

3. Show your dog that being home alone isn’t so bad. If you know that you will need to leave your dog home alone while you run errands or are at work for the day, you need to train them so being home alone isn’t so bad. Work with your dog on any potential separation anxiety issues by leaving for short periods, then longer periods until he or she knows even though you’re leaving, you will be back.

4. Leave some background noise. There are television stations and apps you can play to keep your dog company. DOGTV, for example, has scientifically-developed programming designed to help relax your dog while you’re away.

If you leave on a television or radio, the background noise will keep your dog company and may alleviate any stress they suffer if they hear a lot of outdoor noise (dogs barking, car noise, lawn mowing, etc.)

5. Give your dog a food toy or food puzzle. Keep your dog entertained by filling a Kong with treats that will keep them occupied. Find a food puzzle toy that will reward your dog with a treat when they work at the puzzle. Give your dog his or her favorite toy and consider swapping toys in and out of a toy box to keep them interested.

Don’ts for leaving dogs home alone:

1. Make a big fuss. If you act stressed and hug and kiss and baby-talk your dog before you walk out the door you will raise your dog’s stress level. They will feel your mood and it will make them anxious. They will then equate your leaving with an anxiety-inducing event and may start suffering separation anxiety.

2. Forget to arrange a visit for your dog to have a mid-day walk. Even if your dog is old enough to go the entire day without needing to go to the bathroom, having a bit of company and a short walk will help prevent accidents in the house. And hiring a daytime dog walker will ensure they’re getting some physical activity.

3. Leave chewable items within reach. Yes, you can, and will want to, leave your dog their favorite toys to play with when you’re away. Just don’t leave your favorite shoes or books or trash can in reach. If you don’t want to come home to trash in the house or chewed possessions, don’t leave them where your dog can get to them.

4. Forget to exercise your dog before you leave. A tired dog is a happy dog, and a mentally stimulated dog is more likely to sleep the day away. Schedule in a long walk before you leave or play a rousing game of fetch. Mental and physical activity is necessary for a happy, healthy pup.

5. Leave them alone too long. Most dogs can be left alone for hours at a time (there are those exceptions to the rule), but if you’re going to be away for too many hours, you do need to invest in a pet sitter or dog walker. “Too many hours” is different for each dog; you know your dog best and know what their limits are for being home alone.

It is sometimes as difficult to leave your soulful sidekick home alone as it is to leave your human baby with a sitter, but there are times when there is no way around it. Know that if you plan and prepare before your dog is home alone, it will be all right. When you return you can lavish them with love, give them some praise, then spend quality time together for the rest of the day!

Have a blessed Holy Week everyone.
