Six-minute solar eclipse to illuminate Egypt’s Valley of the Kings in 2027

LUXOR, Egypt — A rare total solar eclipse lasting more than six minutes is set to pass across Egypt on August 2, 2027, with the ancient city of Luxor and the Valley of the Kings among the most prominent viewing locations for an event expected to attract eclipse watchers from around the world.

NASA calculations put the maximum duration of totality at about 6 minutes and 23 seconds, making the August 2 eclipse one of the longest total solar eclipses of the 21st century. The eclipse will cross parts of southern Europe, North Africa and the Middle East before continuing toward the Horn of Africa and western Asia.

In Luxor, totality is expected to last approximately 6 minutes and 22 seconds, with the maximum eclipse occurring at about 1:05 p.m. local time. The entire eclipse, including its partial phases, will last nearly three hours in the city.

The event is attracting particular attention because the path of totality will pass across some of Egypt’s most important archaeological sites. The Valley of the Kings, the Luxor and Karnak temple complexes and other ancient monuments in and around modern Luxor are expected to experience darkness during totality.

The eclipse’s unusually long duration is the result of the Moon passing directly between Earth and the Sun while appearing large enough in the sky to completely cover the solar disk. During totality, the Sun’s bright surface is blocked, allowing the much fainter solar corona to become visible. NASA says total solar eclipses can last from only seconds to about 7.5 minutes, depending on the geometry of the Moon’s shadow and Earth’s position.

The 2027 eclipse belongs to Saros Series 136, a recurring cycle of solar eclipses separated by approximately 18 years. The greatest eclipse is calculated to occur at 10:06 UTC, with the longest totality along the central path crossing North Africa and the Middle East.

Egypt is expected to be a major destination for eclipse observers because the path of totality crosses a broad section of the country and August typically brings dry conditions to the region. In Luxor, the eclipse is expected to reach totality shortly after midday, giving observers an unusually long period to experience the transition from daylight to darkness.

The event has already generated significant interest among astronomy enthusiasts and the travel industry. Luxor’s combination of a long period of totality, historic monuments and generally favorable August weather makes it one of the most anticipated viewing locations along the eclipse path.

For observers, however, the spectacle requires proper eye protection. NASA advises viewers to use appropriate solar viewing glasses or other certified solar filters when looking directly at the Sun during the partial phases. Ordinary sunglasses are not safe for viewing a solar eclipse, while cameras, binoculars and telescopes require properly fitted solar filters.
