Pope Francis discharged from hospital; ‘Still alive,’ he jokes

Rome. A chipper-sounding Pope Francis was discharged Saturday from the Rome hospital where he was treated for bronchitis, quipping to journalists before being driven away that he’s “still alive.”

Francis, 86, was hospitalized at Gemelli Polyclinic on Wednesday following his weekly public audience in St. Peter’s Square after reportedly experiencing breathing difficulties. The pontiff received antibiotics administered intravenously during his stay, the Vatican said.

In a sign of his improved health, the Vatican released details of Francis’ Holy Week schedule. It said he would preside at this weekend’s Palm Sunday Mass and at Easter Mass on April 9, both held in St. Peter’s Square and expected to draw tens of thousands of faithful. A Vatican cardinal will be at the altar to celebrate both Masses, a recent practice due to the pontiff having a troublesome knee issue.

But Francis is scheduled to celebrate Holy Thursday Mass, which this year will be held in a juvenile prison in Rome. Still unclear was whether he would attend the late-night, torch-lit Way of the Cross procession at Rome’s Colosseum to mark Good Friday.

Before departing Gemelli Polyclinic late Saturday morning, Francis comforted a Rome couple whose 5-year-old daughter died Friday night at the Catholic hospital. Outside, Serena Subania, mother of Angelica, sobbed as she pressed her head into the chest of the pope, who held her close and whispered words of comfort.

Francis seemed eager to linger with well-wishers. When a boy showed him his arm cast, the pope made a gesture as if to ask “Do you have a pen?” Three papal aides whipped out theirs. Francis took one of the pens and added his signature to the child’s already well-autographed cast.

The pontiff answered in a low voice that was close to a whisper when reporters peppered him with questions, indicating he had felt unwell — “I felt sick,” he said, pointing to his midsection — a symptom that convinced his medical staff to take him to the hospital Wednesday.

Asked how he felt now, Francis joked, “Still alive, you know.” He gave a thumbs-up sign.

Francis exited the hospital from a side entrance, but his car stopped in front of the main entrance, where a gaggle of journalists waited. He opened the car door himself and got out from the front passenger seat. Francis had a cane ready to lean on. (AP)

The roof at the Apollo Theater in Belvidere, Illinois, collapsed Friday night during a tornado

The Apollo Theatre in Belvidere, Illinois, reportedly suffered a marquee and a partial roof collapse Friday night during a tornado.

The collapse  left at least one person dead, dozens of others injured and debris scattered on nearby cars and streets after the incident.

More than 20 ambulances were called to the scene, according to Fox 32.

People were seen removing the debris off the floor in search of anyone trapped underneath. Emergency responders took people out of the building on stretchers and loaded them into ambulances.

Illinois Democrat Gov. J.B. Pritzker said his administration is closely monitoring the roof collapse.

“I’ve been in touch with officials for updates and to direct any available resources we can,” he wrote on Twitter. “As we learn more, please follow the guidance of all local authorities.”

The collapse was reported amid severe storms with 90 mph winds.

The concert began at 7 p.m. local time Friday night. The bands scheduled to play were Revocation, Morbid Angel, and Skeletal Remains. A band was reportedly playing on stage when the collapse occurred. The incident happened about 30 minutes into the concert.

Morbid Angel said in a statement that the concert was canceled “due to a Tornado that hit the Venue.”

“We ask anyone who is still traveling to the venue to please seek shelter and stay safe,” the band posted on social media. “We are currently sheltering in place, and want to extend our support and hope that everyone at the show tonight is safe. Right now our focus is on making sure everyone in the venue tonight is ok and gets home.” (FoxNews)

Has T. rex lost its bite? Menacing snarl may be wrong

New York. The Tyrannosaurus rex is often shown baring massive, sharp teeth, like the ferocious creature in “Jurassic Park.” But new research suggests that this classic image might be wrong.

The teeth on T. rex and other big theropods were likely covered by scaly lips, concludes a study published Thursday in the journal Science. The dinosaur’s teeth didn’t stick out when its mouth was closed, and even in a wide open bite, you might just see the tips, the scientists found.

The research is the latest in a long back-and-forth over how dinosaur mouths really looked.

Recent depictions show big teeth jutting out of the dinosaurs’ jaws, even when closed. Some thought the predators’ teeth were just too big to fit in their mouths, said study author Thomas Cullen, a paleontologist at Auburn University in Alabama.

When researchers compared skulls from dinosaurs and living reptiles, though, they found this wasn’t the case. Some large monitor lizards actually have bigger teeth than T. rex compared to their skull size, and can still fit them under a set of scaly lips, Cullen said.

The scientists also found clues in the pattern of wear and tear on tooth surfaces.

For a creature like a crocodile, whose teeth stick out of its mouth, the exposed part gets worn down quickly — “like someone’s taken a sander to the side of the tooth,” said another study author Mark Witton, a paleoartist at England’s University of Portsmouth. (AP)

“To provide government employees full opportunity to properly observe 06-07 April 2023, regular holidays, and to allow them to travel to and from the different regions in the country, work in government offices on 05 April 2023 is hereby suspended from 12:00 o’clock in the afternoon onwards,” ayon sa ipinalabas na memorandum.

“However, those agencies whose functions involve the delivery of basic and health services, preparedness/response to disasters and calamities, and/or the performance of other vital services shall continue with their operations and render the necessary services,” ayon pa rin sa MC 16.

“That’s a viral infection kasi so talagang mabilis yung pagkalat. We are trying our best to implement the protocol dun sa World Animal Health but it seems yung iba naman di nag re-report eh,” ayon pa rin kay Estoperez.

France supports PH in Mindoro oil spill response

France has financed the visit of one of its experts to support the Philippines in the ongoing oil spill response after the tanker MT Princess Empress sank in Oriental Mindoro last month.

In a statement Thursday, the French Embassy in Manila said Mikaël Laurent of the France-based Cedre or Center for Documentation, Research and Experimentation on Accidental Water Pollution capped off his 14-day mission to the Philippines on March 29.

Laurent participated in planning meetings with the Philippine Coast Guard, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), local authorities, as well as private operators, including the French company Le Floch Depollution.

He also joined reconnaissance operations and observed coastal cleanup worksites, polluted sites to identify cleanup techniques adapted to the different substrates and anticipate the parameters for the closure of worksites.

Laurent also served as technical advisor during the deployment of oil containment booms and the recovery of pollutants.

He provided advice on selective collection to limit the quantity of waste generated during cleanup operations.

The French Embassy said the assistance enabled “significant improvement” in the speed of pumping pollutants on board the tug Titan 1, accompanied by the tug Ladagat.

“This mission is part of France’s long-term support for the protection of the environment and biodiversity in the Philippines, particularly in the maritime field,” the embassy said.

“It was made possible thanks to funding from the French Development Agency (AFD) and Expertise France, in the framework of technical cooperation on disaster risk management.”

The field cooperation was also followed by exchanges at an institutional level, in particular with the PCG’s Marine Environment Protection Training Institute.

France is an addition to Japan, the United States, and South Korea, which have extended technical expertise and equipment to help speed up Mindoro’s oil containment and cleanup operations. (PNA)
