LONDON | King Charles III has formally reaffirmed that Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, remain non-working members of the British royal family despite their return to the United Kingdom, making clear that their relocation does not restore their former royal roles.
The clarification came in a letter issued by Lord Chamberlain Richard Benyon on the King’s behalf and circulated to senior government and military officials, as well as the King’s representatives across Britain. Buckingham Palace said the move was intended to avoid confusion over the couple’s status as they resume private activities in the UK.
No return to official royal duties
According to the letter, Harry and Meghan will continue not to use the styles “His Royal Highness” and “Her Royal Highness.” Their charitable activities will remain private rather than being undertaken on behalf of the Crown, and their position is described as broadly that of private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.
The couple still hold the titles Duke and Duchess of Sussex, but their HRH styles have been kept in abeyance since they stepped back from royal duties.
Harry and Meghan left their senior working-royal roles in 2020 and moved to the United States. The arrangement was formalized following the Sandringham discussions involving the late Queen Elizabeth II, King Charles, Harry and other senior members of the royal family.
Return after six years
Harry, Meghan and their two children returned to Britain in late August after about six years in the United States. Their move has generated renewed public interest in their relationship with the royal family, particularly with King Charles and Harry’s older brother, Prince William.
Reuters reported that the couple were surprised by the timing of the King’s clarification, while AP said the letter was released with little notice to their team.
Security remains a separate issue. Decisions concerning the couple’s police protection are handled by the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (RAVEC) rather than by the King personally. The question has been particularly significant for Harry, who has previously challenged the decision to reduce his publicly funded security when visiting Britain.
The King’s latest intervention therefore does not represent a change in Harry and Meghan’s royal status. Instead, it reinforces the settlement reached after their 2020 departure and establishes that their return to Britain is a return as private citizens, not as working representatives of the monarchy.
