UNITED NATIONS. Russia and China have blocked a resolution sponsored by the United States at the United Nations Security Council, which called for an “immediate and sustained” cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza. The resolution aimed to safeguard civilians and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to over two million Palestinians, amidst growing concerns about famine and escalating casualties from Israeli bombings.

The resolution emphasized the urgent need for a cease-fire but did not directly link it to the release of hostages taken during Hamas’ attack on Israel in October. However, it unequivocally supported diplomatic efforts to secure a cease-fire alongside the hostages’ release.

Russia’s delegate criticized the resolution as overly politicized and warned that supporting it would result in disgrace. Alongside China, Russia was among the three member states that voted against the resolution, using their veto power to overrule the 11 members in favor. Algeria also voted against the resolution.

In response, the US Ambassador, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, expressed disappointment at Russia and China’s veto, accusing them of obstruction. She criticized their refusal to condemn Hamas for their actions during the conflict, including attacks on civilians and hostage-taking.

Meanwhile, Russia’s deputy U.N. ambassador Dmitry Polyansky emphasized Moscow’s insistence on an immediate cease-fire but questioned the wording of the resolution, calling it misleading.

The Security Council had previously adopted two resolutions addressing the humanitarian situation in Gaza but had not specifically called for a cease-fire. The US has also vetoed resolutions demanding a cease-fire in the past.

Despite the setback, diplomatic efforts continue, with the US pushing for a cease-fire and the release of hostages in the region. The 10 elected members of the Security Council are also drafting their own resolution, emphasizing the need for a humanitarian cease-fire during Ramadan and the unconditional release of hostages.
