MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Senate has installed a new leadership lineup following a tense political standoff, with an ally of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. taking control of the chamber shortly before the scheduled impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, according to reports from The Associated Press.

On Wednesday, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian secured the Senate presidency after gaining the support of 13 of the 24 members of the chamber, effectively forming a majority bloc. His election followed a leadership dispute in which rival Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, a known ally of former President Rodrigo Duterte, also claimed the position based on differing interpretations of quorum rules.

Cayetano later conceded defeat after one senator from his bloc shifted support, solidifying Gatchalian’s majority. The leadership change resolves weeks of competing claims over control of the Senate, which is set to play a central role in the upcoming impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte.

The Senate is expected to begin the impeachment trial in July after the House of Representatives impeached Duterte last month on multiple allegations, including unexplained wealth and an alleged public threat against President Marcos. Duterte has denied the accusations, while her allies argue the charges are politically motivated ahead of the 2028 presidential election.

The leadership dispute has reflected broader political tensions in the Philippines, where relations between President Marcos and Vice President Duterte have deteriorated since their alliance during the 2022 elections. Their split has contributed to heightened partisan divisions within Congress and other institutions.

Political analysts, as cited by The Associated Press, noted that while the resolution of the Senate leadership dispute provides temporary stability, it also underscores the fragility of democratic institutions in the country amid competing political blocs.

The chamber’s leadership is critical as it prepares to preside over the impeachment trial, a process that could have significant implications for the country’s political landscape.

The political backdrop includes the detention of former President Rodrigo Duterte at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, where he faces charges of crimes against humanity linked to his administration’s anti-drug campaign, which left thousands of suspects dead. Duterte denies authorizing extrajudicial killings.

The Senate realignment also follows earlier political maneuvering within competing factions, including shifting alliances and legal controversies involving lawmakers, further intensifying debates over governance and accountability in the upper chamber.
