WASHINGTON — A man who opened fire on U.S. Secret Service officers at a White House security checkpoint has died after being shot during an exchange of gunfire, authorities confirmed.

The U.S. Secret Service said the suspect approached a checkpoint near the White House shortly after 6 p.m. ET and “removed a weapon from his bag and began firing at posted officers.” Agents immediately returned fire, striking the individual.

The suspect was transported to a nearby hospital but later died from his injuries, according to updated official reports.

A bystander was also injured during the incident. Authorities have not yet determined whether the injury resulted from the suspect’s gunfire or from rounds fired by responding officers. The condition of the bystander remains unclear as of latest updates.

No Secret Service personnel were injured in the shooting. Officials also confirmed that President Donald Trump, who was inside the White House at the time, was not affected.

Journalists covering the White House reported hearing multiple gunshots and were instructed to shelter in place inside the press briefing room. The Secret Service later confirmed it had secured the area and was coordinating with the FBI and other law enforcement agencies.

Investigators are still working to establish the full sequence of events, including how many rounds were fired and the exact source of the bystander’s injury.

The Metropolitan Police Department temporarily cordoned off the area, with crime scene markers and emergency equipment visible along the sidewalk near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, just outside the White House complex.

The incident adds to a series of recent security-related events in the vicinity of the White House, prompting continued heightened alert among federal security agencies.

Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing.
