CARACAS/LA GUAIRA, Venezuela — The death toll from powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela has surpassed 1,400, as rescue teams continue urgent search operations for survivors trapped beneath collapsed structures while authorities assess the full scale of the devastation.
Thousands of people remain missing following the twin earthquakes, which caused widespread destruction in several areas, particularly the coastal region of La Guaira and parts of Caracas. Officials warned that the number of casualties could rise as rescuers reach more affected communities.
The earthquakes, estimated at magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, struck on Wednesday, triggering building collapses, widespread damage, and panic among residents. Emergency responders have been working around the clock to clear debris and search damaged structures for possible survivors.
More than 1,600 international rescuers have arrived or are being deployed to assist local emergency teams, with support from countries including the United States, Argentina, El Salvador, and other nations involved in search-and-rescue efforts.
Many residents have been forced to stay outdoors due to continuing aftershocks and fears that weakened buildings could collapse. Authorities have restricted access to some areas to allow rescue teams to operate safely and efficiently.
The disaster has left thousands injured and displaced, placing additional pressure on the Venezuelan government as families of missing residents demand faster assistance and improved coordination of relief operations.
Humanitarian aid efforts have begun as authorities work with local and international organizations to provide emergency support to affected communities.
Rescue teams remain focused on locating survivors while officials continue evaluating the extent of the damage from what is being described as one of Venezuela’s most devastating natural disasters in recent years.
