SHANGHAI | October 11, 2026 | Top-seeded Alexander Zverev survived a three-set battle to reach the fourth round of the Shanghai Masters on Sunday, while US Open finalist Ben Shelton suffered a surprise third-round exit after losing to France’s Arthur Gea in straight sets.
Zverev defeated Frenchman Quentin Halys, ranked 48th in the world, 6-4, 6-7 (8), 6-3 in a match that saw the German squander two match points in the second-set tiebreak before recovering to secure victory. He did not face a break point throughout the match, according to the Associated Press (AP).
The victory moved Zverev into the round of 16, where he is scheduled to face Alexander Bublik, who defeated American Brandon Nakashima in three sets, 6-7 (7), 6-3, 7-6 (5).
Earlier, third-seeded Shelton was eliminated by 21-year-old Gea, who won 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3). The Frenchman converted his first match point in the second-set tiebreak to claim one of the tournament’s biggest upsets.
Gea, ranked 56th, secured his first victory over a top-10 player, according to Reuters. Shelton, ranked fourth in the world, acknowledged that he had been outplayed and pointed to limited match practice and fitness concerns after withdrawing from the Japan Open. He had also struggled with jet lag following his recent travels.
Shelton reached the US Open final in September, where he lost to Zverev. He had entered Shanghai among the tournament’s leading contenders but was unable to find a way past Gea in two closely contested sets.
Other players advancing on Sunday included ninth-seeded Australian Alex de Minaur, who defeated Japan’s Rei Sakamoto 7-6 (6), 6-4, and 26th-seeded Russian Karen Khachanov, who beat France’s Adrian Mannarino 6-2, 6-4.
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner withdrew from the tournament earlier in the week, announcing that a right knee injury would keep him out for the remainder of the 2026 season, AP reported. His absence has added uncertainty to the battle for the year-end rankings.
The Shanghai Masters is one of the ATP Tour’s nine Masters 1000 tournaments, the highest tier of men’s professional tennis below the four Grand Slam events. Established in 2009, the tournament attracts leading players from around the world and plays a significant role in the late-season rankings race.
Zverev’s victory keeps his campaign on track, while Gea’s breakthrough win gives the young Frenchman a major opportunity to advance further in one of the tour’s most prestigious events.
