EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France –  U.S. President Donald Trump asserted leadership over allied deliberations at the Group of Seven (G7) summit in France on Wednesday, telling fellow leaders “I’m the boss” as they coordinated a stronger stance on Ukraine and agreed on additional measures targeting Russia, according to Reuters reporting.

The remark came during meetings in Evian-les-Bains, where G7 leaders issued a joint statement acknowledging Ukraine’s improved battlefield position and signaling continued political and economic backing for Kyiv. The statement also reinforced pressure on Moscow, including fresh sanctions measures, as Western allies reassessed the trajectory of the war and prospects for negotiations.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European partners had used the summit to press for sustained U.S. support, arguing that Russia is not in a position to dictate peace terms. The joint statement was viewed by several diplomats as an indication that Washington has adopted a firmer line on Moscow compared with earlier positions, though analysts cautioned that policy implementation remains uncertain.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said there had been a noticeable shift in Washington’s approach. “There is a position that is harder toward Russia and more realistic, in our view, of the situation on the ground of the war,” he told reporters.

Despite the coordinated messaging, uncertainty remains over whether the United States will maintain or expand sanctions pressure, including decisions on waivers tied to Russian oil exports. Trump’s position is seen as pivotal to any sustained G7 strategy given Washington’s central role in enforcement mechanisms.

Alongside discussions on Ukraine, leaders also addressed global economic and security issues, including supply chains for critical minerals and broader trade imbalances. France has pushed for a collective G7 approach to reduce reliance on China, particularly in strategic sectors such as rare earths and battery materials.

Diplomats said discussions included potential industrial policy tools such as price supports, subsidies, market standards, and coordinated investment in non-Chinese supply chains. The proposals reflect growing concern in Europe and North America over Beijing’s dominance in key industrial inputs and export controls affecting materials such as rare earth magnets.

China has rejected allegations of unfair trade practices and has warned against protectionist measures, including proposed “Buy European” policies and expanded technology sovereignty rules within the European Union.

The G7 also discussed artificial intelligence governance over a working lunch attended by senior technology executives, including OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. Talks focused on regulatory frameworks, liability issues involving AI systems, and the broader implications of machine-generated content for information integrity.

While Ukraine remained a central focus of the summit, leaders also welcomed a preliminary U.S.-Iran understanding and discussed broader energy security concerns. These include efforts to diversify global energy routes away from chokepoints such as the Strait of Hormuz, which has been affected by regional tensions.

However, Trump reiterated that the Iran agreement remains provisional. He warned that the United States could resume military action if the deal collapses, underscoring continued volatility in parallel diplomatic tracks alongside the G7’s coordinated positions.

The summit outcomes reflect a convergence on several strategic issues, particularly Ukraine and global supply chains, but also highlight ongoing divergences among allies over the extent and durability of U.S. commitments under the current administration.
