JAKARTA | Flights to and from Indonesia’s capital resumed Tuesday after volcanic ash from Anak Krakatau forced airport closures for two days, disrupting nearly 3,000 flights and affecting about 341,000 passengers.

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport and Halim Perdanakusuma Airport serving Jakarta, along with three other regional airports, reopened after authorities determined that conditions were safe for aviation. Airlines were required to inspect aircraft before returning to service, while pilots were warned to avoid restricted airspace affected by volcanic ash.

Anak Krakatau, located in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra, remained active Tuesday. Indonesia’s Geological Agency recorded four eruptions, although dense fog prevented visual confirmation. Authorities said the volcano had returned to intermittent Strombolian activity after a prolonged eruptive phase.

The disruption began after ash from the volcano spread across western Indonesia. Aviation authorities closed airports because volcanic ash can damage aircraft engines and other critical systems.

Anak Krakatau was formed from the remnants of the historic Krakatau volcano, whose massive 1883 eruption triggered a tsunami and one of the deadliest volcanic disasters in modern history. In 2018, Anak Krakatau itself collapsed partly into the sea during an eruption, triggering a tsunami that killed more than 400 people.

Indonesia lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire and has more than 120 active volcanoes, making volcanic eruptions a recurring challenge for aviation and communities across the archipelago.
