Just like ‘Finding Nemo’

I’m done writing the saga of Palasig who to me was a great writer and a poet. I want to have it printed as a book for reference purposes in the future. Now I can write about anything like before.

Let’s start with the forthcoming SK Elections. For the longest time, I have yet to see SK officials and members doing something good and exemplary in their barangay. In the past, most of them if not all were often embroiled in petty crimes and in extreme cases, drug use. Some of them have developed the attitude of disturbing the peace in the community like shouting at midnight when drunk, starting trouble in barangay gatherings, making noise with their motorcycles and many other annoying activities.

SK must change for the better and not just run for the heck of it or for prestige or for the small power attached to it. They should erase the notion of many that SK has become the perfect breeding ground for corruption as seen in the past. They should refrain from doing activities that require expenses and asking donations from barrio folks like uniforms for basketball. Instead, they should initiate actions that would help their respective community like clean-up drive of canals and rivers, tree planting, or simply showing the youth that they practice good manners and right conduct (GMRC).

In the past, when SK had not yet been conceived by politicians, the YMCA and YWCA were actively doing good jobs of developing the skills and potentials of the young. They regularly conduct seminars and leadership training without expenses on the part of the youth and their parents. They sponsor summer camps for personality development of the young participants. They invite good speakers and achievers that will inspire them to be good citizens of the community.

During those days, money was not the motivational factor of teaching the youth but the sincere desire of leaders to see the youth grow and become useful citizens of this country. If they can do that in the past, with more reasons they can do it now considering the ease of communication and the availability of modern technology. The sad part is, we need to find true leaders who are willing to sacrifice personal interest for the welfare of others. Looking for such leaders nowadays is like finding Nemo in the depth of the Pacific Ocean.

Elon Musk considers surgery ahead of proposed ‘cage match’ with Mark Zuckerberg

0

NEW YORK. Elon Musk has mentioned the possibility of undergoing surgery before the proposed “cage match” with Mark Zuckerberg. The two tech billionaires had seemingly agreed to a face-to-face showdown in late June. While it remains uncertain if the physical fight will actually take place, Musk and Zuckerberg have continued to generate interest by exchanging online jabs at each other. Most recently, Musk announced on Sunday that the fight would be live-streamed on his social media site X, formerly known as Twitter.

Musk also stated that the proceeds from the fight would go to a charity for veterans. In response, Zuckerberg raised concerns about using a more reliable platform for fundraising. He expressed skepticism about the fight happening anytime soon.

Earlier on Sunday, Musk mentioned that he was training for the match by lifting weights. However, he revealed that the timing of the fight is still uncertain due to a scheduled MRI and the possibility of surgery.

“I’m getting an MRI of my neck & upper back tomorrow,” Musk wrote Sunday night. “May require surgery before the fight can happen. Will know this week.”

The talk of a physical fight began in June when Musk, who owns X, responded to a tweet about Meta preparing to release a new Twitter rival called Threads. He took a jab at Zuckerberg, expressing concern about the world becoming exclusively under Zuckerberg’s control. In response, a Twitter user jokingly warned Musk of Zuckerberg’s jiu-jitsu training.

“I’m up for a cage match if he is lol,” Musk wrote. After it appeared that Zuckerberg agreed to the idea, Musk proposed the Vegas Octagon.

Whether the cage match will actually occur in Las Vegas remains uncertain, as Musk has a history of tweeting about potential actions prematurely or without following through. Nevertheless, the banter between the two billionaires has captured attention, leading to a wave of memes and posts asking people to “choose your fighter.”

As of Monday morning, The Associated Press reached out to Meta, X, and the Ultimate Fighting Championship, which owns the Octagon, for statements on the matter.

Astronauts get first glimpse of spacecraft for upcoming moon mission

0

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla.The four astronauts who are set to embark on a lunar journey in about a year have been given their initial look at the spacecraft they will be flying in, although NASA issued a caution on Tuesday regarding possible further delays.

With the distinct red “Remove Before Flight” tags still hanging from it, the astronauts examined the unfinished Orion capsule and walked away with a sense of awe. “There’s nothing else quite like that… it sent shivers down my spine,” shared astronaut Christina Koch with the press.

During a recent visit to the Kennedy Space Center on Monday and Tuesday, the American and Canadian crew meticulously inspected the capsule. NASA’s intention is to send this quartet around the moon and safely back to Earth in the late stages of the upcoming year.

Nevertheless, ongoing evaluations of the capsule’s heat shield have the potential to postpone this significant lunar journey by astronauts—the first in over fifty years. The uncrewed test flight encircling the moon from the previous year resulted in unforeseen scorching and material loss from the heat shield situated at the capsule’s base. This heat shield plays a pivotal role in safeguarding the capsule against the intense heat experienced during reentry into the Earth’s atmosphere.

Looking ahead to the next mission of the Artemis program, which aims for a moon landing, more challenges loom, and the targeted time frame of late 2025 could potentially extend into 2026. The main challenge revolves around SpaceX’s Starship, the rocket that will transport two NASA astronauts from lunar orbit down to the moon’s southern pole.

Considering that SpaceX’s Starship has undergone just one test flight to date, ending in an explosion shortly after launch in April, NASA is harboring concerns regarding whether Elon Musk’s SpaceX can successfully meet the established deadlines. The space agency is withholding commitment to a moon landing using the Starship until SpaceX accomplishes several Starship orbital flights, establishes an Earth-based refueling depot, and completes a comprehensive rehearsal for the moon landing.

According to Jim Free, NASA’s chief of exploration systems development, a clearer understanding of the situation is expected by autumn. Astronaut Victor Glover admitted, “It’s evident that we have a significant amount of work ahead of us.”

Despite these lingering uncertainties, an optimistic atmosphere filled the Neil Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building, which bears the name of the first person to set foot on the moon. The astronauts, assigned to this mission amidst excitement in the previous spring, were asked about their feelings while on such hallowed grounds.

Reid Wiseman, the commander of the crew, explained that the significance lies not in their personal journey but in the upcoming moon landing, as it will “carry the dream for us.”

In preparation for an upcoming acoustic test, over 200 rock concert speakers were positioned around the capsule. NASA is planning to subject the area to up to 143 decibels of thunderous noise, mimicking liftoff sounds, to assess the resilience of the capsule’s windows, wiring, and other components.

Pointing towards the capsule, Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen remarked, “That’s real… it’s not a dream.”

Thai King’s second son makes surprising return to the country after decades apart

BANGKOK. The estranged son of Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn, Vacharaesorn Vivacharawongse, made an unexpected return to the country after 27 years of living abroad. His surprise return was revealed in an online video, showing him being warmly greeted by well-wishers at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport.

Vacharaesorn’s return comes during a sensitive time for the Thai royal family, as the eldest daughter of the king has been in a coma since December.

The 42-year-old, who works at a law firm in New York, is the second son of King Vajiralongkorn with his former wife Sujarinee Vivacharawongse, a former actress. They divorced in 1996, and Sujarinee and her children moved abroad. The youngest daughter was taken back by the royal family and given the title Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana, but the four sons, including Vacharaesorn, remain estranged without any formal royal titles.

The Palace has not commented on his visit. During his return, Vacharaesorn visited a daycare center for underprivileged children in Bangkok and donated money to support their work. He interacted thoughtfully with the children and showed great interest in the foundation’s efforts to help underprivileged families.

After his arrival, Vacharaesorn was seen visiting religious sites in Bangkok, including the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, and shared a photo on his Facebook account of himself on an auto-rickshaw at night with the caption “Bangkok Tuk-Tuk.”

King Vajiralongkorn, 71, has been married four times and has seven children, but he has not yet named an official heir. His fourth marriage to Queen Suthida was announced shortly before his coronation in 2019. He ascended to the throne after the passing of his father, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, in 2016.

In December, the Palace disclosed that Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol, 44, collapsed due to heart arrhythmia and was later diagnosed with a mycoplasma infection. She has been unconscious and on life support since, as per the Palace’s latest statement on her condition in January.

Delayed passengers growl after a bear escapes from crate in cargo hold of an Iraqi plane in Dubai

0

BAGHDAD. Iraq’s prime minister has ordered an investigation into how a bear escaped from its crate in the cargo hold of an Iraqi aircraft as it was due to depart from Dubai airport, leaving passengers disgruntled over the delay and causing a stir on social media.

Iraqi Airways said it wasn’t to blame for the bear’s escape and that the aircraft’s crew worked with authorities in the United Arab Emirates, which dispatched specialists to sedate the animal and remove it from the plane.

A video clip circulating on social media showed the plane’s captain apologizing to passengers for Friday’s takeoff delay because of the bear’s escape from its crate in the cargo hold.

Iraqi Airways said Saturday that procedures to transport the bear were carried out in accordance with the law and with procedures and standards approved by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

The airline said the bear was being flown from Baghdad to Dubai. But a person speaking on the video clip making the social media rounds suggested otherwise, saying the aircraft was an hour late for its trip to Baghdad and that passengers were being asked to disembark until the issue was resolved.

Dubai International Airport, the world’s busiest for international travel, declined to comment.

An Iraqi Airways official confirmed to The Associated Press on Sunday that the bear was, in fact, being transported to the Iraqi capital. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he’s not authorized to speak about the matter publicly, declined to name the animal’s owner.

Keeping predatory animals as pets in Iraq — especially in Baghdad — has become popular among the wealthy.

Authorities have struggled to enforce legal provisions to protect wild animals. Baghdad’s police has previously called on citizens to assist authorities in preventing such animals from being let loose on the city’s streets or ending up as exotic meals in restaurant by reporting such cases.

AP first reported the story.
