Mass evacuation of young scouts from South Korean Jamboree as storm Khanun approaches

SEOUL, South Korea. South Korean authorities, in collaboration with the World Organization of the Scout Movement, are set to evacuate tens of thousands of young scouts from a coastal jamboree site as Tropical Storm Khanun approaches. The decision was announced on Monday as the storm continued its meandering path, posing a threat to the safety of the scouts.

Starting Tuesday morning, more than 1,000 vehicles will be utilized to move approximately 36,000 scouts, mostly teenagers, from the World Scout Jamboree in the southwestern county of Buan. The scouts hail from 158 countries and will be relocated to various venues in and around the capital city, Seoul. Authorities are working to secure spaces at government training centers, education facilities, and hotels to accommodate the participants during the evacuation process.

The coastal campsite, which has been hosting the jamboree, will no longer be used for any event after the scouts have been safely moved out. While some reports indicated that scouts from Sweden, Norway, and Denmark might be transferred to the Camp Humphreys U.S. military base, this was not immediately confirmed by officials.

The World Organization of the Scout Movement emphasized the need for a swift response from South Korea to move the scouts out of the storm’s path and provide necessary resources and support until they return to their home countries.

According to the latest weather reports, Tropical Storm Khanun is expected to make landfall in South Korea on Thursday morning, potentially bringing winds as strong as 118 to 154 kph (73 to 95 mph). Large parts of the country’s south, including the Buan area, could be affected by the storm as early as Wednesday.

Before the evacuation announcement, soaring temperatures had already compelled British and American scouts to leave the site and seek refuge in nearby hotels and military facilities. Several participants had been treated for heat-related ailments since the jamboree began.

In response to the impending storm, South Korea’s Safety Ministry instructed local officials to prepare for the closure of vulnerable sectors like coastal areas, hiking trails, river parks, and underpass tunnels.

While the evacuation marks an unexpected disruption to the jamboree, officials are working to create alternative programs and activities for the scouts to participate in before their departure. This includes the possibility of a K-pop concert at a Seoul soccer stadium on Friday, coinciding with the closing ceremony.

As authorities prepare for the evacuation, the safety and well-being of the young scouts remain the top priority.

Elon Musk announces to livestream cage fight with Mark Zuckerberg on X

0

NEW YORK. Elon Musk has revealed that his potential in-person fight with Mark Zuckerberg will be streamed on his social media site X, formerly known as Twitter.

The two tech billionaires apparently agreed to a “cage match” face-off in late June. Zuckerberg is actually trained in mixed martial arts, and the CEO of Facebook’s parent company Meta shared about completing his first jiu-jitsu tournament earlier this year.

“Musk wrote in a post on Sunday, “Zuck v Musk fight will be live-streamed on X, with all proceeds going to charity for veterans.”

“Don’t have time to work out, so I just bring them to work,” Musk added.

Whether or not Musk and Zuckerberg will actually step into the ring in Las Vegas remains to be seen, especially since Musk often tweets about actions prematurely or without following through. Nevertheless, even if their cage match agreement is all in jest, it has garnered attention.

It all started when Musk, who owns X, responded to a tweet about Meta preparing to release a new Twitter rival called Threads. He took a jab at the world becoming “exclusively under Zuck’s thumb with no other options.” However, a Twitter user playfully warned Musk about Zuckerberg’s jiu-jitsu training.

“I’m up for a cage match if he is lol,” Musk wrote.

Representatives of X, Meta, and Ultimate Fighting Championship, which owns the venue where the fight might take place, have not immediately responded to emails seeking comment.

Musk’s push to stream the video live on X is part of his efforts to transform the platform into a “digital town square.” However, his highly publicized Twitter Spaces kickoff event in May, where Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced his run for president, faced technical glitches and nearly a half-hour delay.

Musk attributed the problems to “straining” servers due to the overwhelming number of people trying to listen to the audio-only event. Nevertheless, at its peak, the number of listeners listed reached around 420,000, far from the millions of viewers that televised presidential announcements attract.

“The PCG calls on the China Coast Guard to restrain its forces, respect the sovereign rights of the Philippines in its exclusive economic zone and continental shelf, refrain from hampering freedom of navigation, and take appropriate actions against the individuals involved in this unlawful incident,” ayon kay PCG Spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea Commodore Jay Tarriela.

“We ask that China Coast Guard, as an organization with a responsibility to observe state obligations under UNCLOS, COLREGs, and other relevant instruments of international maritime safety and security, to cease all illegal activities within the maritime zones of the Philippines,” sabi ni Tarriela.

Mariin ding kinondena ng Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) ang  insidente na tinurang “excessive and offensive.”

“We call on the China Coast Guard and the Central Military Commission to act with prudence and be responsible in their actions to prevent miscalculations and accidents that will endanger peoples’ lives,” ayon sa pahayag ng AFP.

Pope announces World Youth Day to return to Asia in 2027, urges young people ‘not to be afraid’

0

LISBON, Portugal. Pope Francis concluded World Youth Day in Portugal with a massive open-air Mass, attended by an estimated 1.5 million pilgrims, and delivered a powerful message to the young people urging them to embrace their dreams and not be afraid. The pontiff also made a significant announcement, revealing that the next edition of World Youth Day in 2027 will be held in Asia for the first time in three decades.

The news that Seoul, South Korea, has been chosen to host World Youth Day 2027 reflects the growing importance of the continent for the Catholic Church. In contrast to traditionally Christian lands in Europe where the Church is facing decline, Asia is witnessing a vibrant and expanding Catholic community. South Korea, in particular, has experienced remarkable growth, with Catholics now constituting 10 percent of the country’s population of 50 million, up from just 1 percent half a century ago.

During his homily, Pope Francis encouraged the young people to strive for positive change in the world and emphasized the significance of their role in the Church and society. He highlighted the essential contributions of the younger generation in working for justice and peace. Drawing inspiration from St. John Paul II, who frequently emphasized the potential of young Catholics during his tenure, Pope Francis urged the youth not to fear failure and to pursue their aspirations with determination.

As World Youth Day events have historically attracted massive crowds from all over the world, this year’s gathering in Lisbon has been no exception. Pilgrims from diverse countries and backgrounds came together, camping out overnight to participate in the grand finale of the festival.

Throughout his visit to Portugal, Pope Francis deviated from his scripted speeches, preferring to engage in spontaneous and direct conversations with young people. His approach seemed well-received by the attendees, who appreciated his conversational style and the opportunity to interact with him.

Looking ahead to the future, Pope Francis also mentioned an upcoming youth jamboree in 2025 to be hosted by the Vatican during a Jubilee year. This event is expected to attract over 30 million pilgrims to Rome.

Regarding concerns about the Pope’s health as a reason for disregarding prepared speeches, the Vatican spokesperson assured the public that Pope Francis is in good shape and doesn’t have any eyesight problems affecting his ability to read his remarks.

The Pope’s message of inclusivity and openness throughout the week resonated with the young attendees, who embraced the idea of the Church as a place that welcomes all, irrespective of their imperfections. They expressed their support for the Pope’s inclusive vision and felt empowered by the sense of unity and acceptance they experienced among fellow believers from different nations.

As World Youth Day came to a close in Lisbon, the faithful departed with renewed hope, inspired by the Pope’s call to fearlessly pursue their dreams and make a positive impact on the world around them. With the exciting news that the next World Youth Day will be hosted in Asia, the Church looks forward to further engaging with the dynamic and growing Catholic community in the region.

The first pill to treat postpartum depression has been approved by US health officials

0

WASHINGTON. The United States health officials have approved the first-ever pill designed specifically to treat severe postpartum depression. Known as Zurzuvae, the drug is intended for adults experiencing intense depression related to childbirth or pregnancy. Postpartum depression is a condition that affects thousands of new mothers in the U.S. each year, with an estimated 400,000 people affected annually. While this condition often resolves on its own within a few weeks, it can persist for months or even years in some cases. Existing treatment methods include counseling and antidepressants, but they may take weeks to show results and might not be effective for everyone.

The newly approved Zurzuvae pill, developed by Sage Therapeutics, is taken orally once a day for a 14-day period. According to two company studies, women who took Zurzuvae experienced reduced signs of depression over a four- to six-week period compared to those who received a placebo. The benefits were evident in many patients within just three days of starting the medication.

Dr. Tiffany Farchione, FDA’s director of psychiatric drugs, believes that having access to an oral medication like Zurzuvae will provide a valuable option for women struggling with severe postpartum depression, including those facing life-threatening emotions.

Sahar McMahon, one of the participants in the drug study, had never experienced depression until after giving birth to her second daughter in late 2021. She decided to enroll in the trial and noticed an improvement in her mood and outlook within days of taking the first pills. Other experts, such as Dr. Kimberly Yonkers of Yale University, also acknowledge the positive effects of Zurzuvae but suggest that more follow-up data should be obtained to understand its long-term efficacy.

Zurzuvae is a neurosteroid drug, which stimulates a different brain pathway compared to older antidepressants that target serotonin, the chemical associated with mood and emotions. The pill form of the drug is a more convenient alternative to the previously approved IV version, which is less commonly used due to its high cost and administration challenges.

As of now, the price of Zurzuvae has not been announced, and its affordability will likely play a significant role in how widely it will be prescribed. The drug’s side effects are milder than the IV version and include drowsiness and dizziness.

In summary, the approval of Zurzuvae marks a significant milestone in the treatment of postpartum depression, providing a promising option for those who have not responded well to other treatments. However, continued monitoring and research are needed to fully understand the drug’s long-term effects and ensure its safe and effective use for new mothers struggling with severe depression after childbirth.

45 pistol at pito pang slugs.
