16 na bahay nasunog sa Lumban

0

Lumban, Laguna.

Crowds cheer as India launches a lander and rover to explore the moon’s south pole

0

SRIHARIKOTA, India. An Indian spacecraft blazed its way to the far side of the moon Friday in a follow-up mission to its failed effort nearly four years ago to land a rover softly on the lunar surface, the country’s space agency said.

Chandrayaan-3, the word for “moon craft” in Sanskrit, took off from a launch pad in Sriharikota in southern India with an orbiter, a lander and a rover, in a demonstration of India’s emerging space technology. The spacecraft is set to embark on a journey lasting slightly over a month before landing on the moon’s surface later in August.

Applause and cheers swept through mission control at Satish Dhawan Space Center, where the Indian Space Research Organization’s engineers and scientists celebrated as they monitored the launch of the spacecraft. Thousands of Indians cheered outside the mission control center and waved the national flag as they watched the spacecraft rise into the sky.

“Congratulations India. Chandrayaan-3 has started its journey towards the moon,” ISRO Director Sreedhara Panicker Somanath said shortly after the launch.

A successful landing would make India the fourth country — after the United States, the Soviet Union, and China — to achieve the feat.

The six-wheeled lander and rover module of Chandrayaan-3 is configured with payloads that would provide data to the scientific community on the properties of lunar soil and rocks, including chemical and elemental compositions, said Dr. Jitendra Singh, junior minister for Science and Technology.

India’s previous attempt to land a robotic spacecraft near the moon’s little-explored south pole ended in failure in 2019. It entered the lunar orbit but lost touch with its lander that crashed while making its final descent to deploy a rover to search for signs of water. According to a failure analysis report submitted to the ISRO, the crash was caused by a software glitch.

The $140-million mission in 2019 was intended to study permanently shadowed moon craters that are thought to contain water deposits and were confirmed by India’s Chandrayaan-1 mission in 2008.

Somanath said the main objective of the mission this time was a safe and soft landing on the moon. He said the Indian space agency has perfected the art of reaching up to the moon, “but it is the landing that the agency is working on.”

Numerous countries and private companies are in a race to successfully land a spacecraft on the lunar surface. In April, a Japanese company’s spacecraft apparently crashed while attempting to land on the moon. An Israeli nonprofit tried to achieve a similar feat in 2019, but its spacecraft was destroyed on impact.

With nuclear-armed India emerging as the world’s fifth-largest economy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s nationalist government is eager to show off the country’s prowess in security and technology.

“Chandrayaan-3 scripts a new chapter in India’s space odyssey. It soars high, elevating the dreams and ambitions of every Indian,” Modi said in a tweet after the launch.

India is using research from space and elsewhere to solve problems at home. Its space program has already helped develop satellite, communication and remote-sensing technologies and has been used to gauge underground water levels and predict weather in the country, which is prone to cycles of drought and flood.

“This is a very critical mission,” said Pallava Bagla, a science writer and co-author of books on India’s space exploration, adding that India will require soft landing technology if it wants to attempt more missions to the moon.

India is also looking forward to its first mission to the International Space Station next year, in collaboration with the United States as part of agreements between Modi and U.S. President Joe Biden at the White House last month.

This one-off visit by an Indian astronaut to the International Space Station will not hamper India’s own program, which aims to launch an Indian astronaut from Indian soil on an Indian rocket in late 2024, Bagla said.

As part of its own space program, active since the 1960s, India has launched satellites for itself and other countries, and successfully put one in orbit around Mars in 2014.

Singh said that based on the current trajectory of growth, India’s space sector could be a trillion-dollar economy in the coming years.

As of April, India has launched 424 satellites for 34 countries, including Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Kazakhstan, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. The ISRO has earned approximately 1.1 billion rupees ($13.4 million) in the past five years from the launch of foreign satellites, the minister told India’s Parliament in December.

Threads becomes fastest-growing app ever, with 100 million users in under a week

The last record was held by ChatGPT, the wildly popular generative AI tool, and took the site two months to achieve.

Threads broke the record to become the fastest-growing app ever, gaining over 100 million users in less than a week. The Twitter rival dethrones ChatGPT, the previous record holder, which, though not exactly an app, earned 100 million users in just two months. Before that, TikTok held the record, reaching the mark in nine months.

Threads, which launched on July 5 for iOS and Android, wields users’ Instagram credentials to sign up, making it easier for the existing 1.6 billion users of the photo-sharing app to make the leap. It operates as a separate app from Instagram that users must download and then activate their Threads profile to use it.

Thus far, it’s the first Twitter alternative to really take off successfully — at least so far.

“Several Twitter clones have emerged over the years, yet all have failed to achieve mainstream success,” says Mark Weinstein, social media and privacy expert and MeWe founder. “By integrating with Instagram and its billions of existing users (far more than Twitter has), Threads may be the first Twitter clone with a real chance of unseating its segment stronghold, albeit while collecting mass data troves on its users, for sale to all targeting bidders.”

Though available in 100 countries, Threads doesn’t operate in the European Union, so the record-breaking user count doesn’t include potential EU users.

However, Meta plans to launch Threads in the EU in the future. It is unclear whether the current roadblock refers to the EU’s antitrust laws in the works or the Threads app’s privacy concerns.

“Similar to Meta’s other products like Facebook and Instagram, it appears that Threads will earn revenue via data harvesting and surveillance capitalism,” Weinstein adds. “According to Apple’s App Privacy Details, Threads will collect a plethora of user data, including locations, contacts, purchases, browsing history, search history, financial info, health & fitness, and more.”

Instagram users that join Threads have an identifier to show for it on their profile, along with a counter for the user count. As the app continues to grow its user base, it’s worth remembering that signed-up users don’t equal active users.

“Dancing to the tune of a sacred and biblical prayer, with matching sacred costume to boot, is completely disrespectful not only of people and institutions practicing such faith but of God Himself,” ayon kay Fr. Jerome Secillano, executive secretary ng CBCP Episcopal Commission on Public Affairs.

“May God haved mercy on him. The sacred liturgy is a sacred celebration where God encounters his people through his word and the sacraments. The liturgical celebrations of the Church should glorify God at hindi babastosin ang Diyos. They are meant to sanctify people at hindi mambabastos ng mga tao,” dagdag pa ni Archbishop Bendico.

Jollibee North America addresses illegal dismissal accusations in New Jersey branch

0

NEW JERSEY. Jollibee North America has responded to allegations of illegal dismissal involving nine employees at its branch in New Jersey, stating that the Journal Square store terminated the workers due to financial challenges.

The Jollibee branch had previously faced criticism for the alleged unjust termination of the nine employees.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Jollibee North America explained that the Journal Square branch, which is situated near a commuter hub, has been struggling to recover from changes in customer behavior following the pandemic. This includes a decline in foot traffic in the area as more people are working remotely.

“The Jollibee Journal Square store in the US implemented a reduction in its workforce, unfortunately affecting nine store crew members who were selected based on a last-in first-out basis of hiring,” the statement clarified. “This action was taken due to financial circumstances specific to this store and is unrelated to other claims circulating online.”

Last week, the labor group Justice for Jollibee Workers gained attention when it accused the branch of unlawfully terminating the nine employees after discovering their plans to unionize and demand higher wages, double holiday pay, and compensation for “borrowed workers” who were temporarily assigned to work for another employer.

Justice for Jollibee Workers subsequently penned a letter demanding the reinstatement of all terminated employees, backpay and compensation, a public apology, and recognition of workers’ rights.

“We know the truth. We know that, in fact, you were trying to undermine us, workers who are simply striving to improve our working conditions,” the demand letter expressed.

Former Jollibee workers, along with more than 50 supporters, staged a protest at the Journal Square, with some publicly reading the demand letter to ensure the management was aware of their grievances.

Justice for Jollibee Workers also claims that instances of wage theft, worker mistreatment and misclassification, casualization, and chronic understaffing have occurred in Jollibee branches worldwide.

WHO: Global outbreaks of avian influenza pose ongoing risks to animals and humans

0

The current outbreaks of avian influenza, commonly known as “bird flu,” have inflicted devastation upon animal populations, including poultry, wild birds, and certain mammals, leading to severe repercussions for farmers’ livelihoods and the food trade. While primarily affecting animals, these outbreaks continue to pose persistent risks to human health.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) have united in urging countries to collaborate across sectors in order to save as many animals as possible and safeguard human populations.

Although avian influenza viruses typically transmit among birds, the growing number of H5N1 avian influenza detections among mammals, which share closer biological proximity to humans than birds do, has raised concerns that the virus may adapt more easily to infect humans. Furthermore, some mammals can serve as mixing vessels for influenza viruses, potentially giving rise to new, more harmful strains that affect both animals and humans.

The H5N1 avian influenza viruses, stemming from the goose/Guangdong lineage, initially surfaced in 1996 and have caused outbreaks in birds ever since. Since 2020, a variant of these viruses belonging to the H5 clade 2.3.4.4b has triggered an unprecedented number of deaths in wild birds and poultry across multiple countries in Africa, Asia, and Europe. In 2021, the virus spread to North America, and in 2022, it reached Central and South America.

In 2022, WOAH received reports of H5N1 high pathogenicity avian influenza outbreaks in poultry and wild birds from 67 countries across five continents, resulting in over 131 million domestic poultry losses due to death or culling in affected farms and villages. As the disease continues to spread, another 14 countries have reported outbreaks in 2023, primarily in the Americas. Notably, mass death events in wild birds caused by influenza A(H5N1) clade 2.3.4.4b viruses have been recorded.

Monitoring the recent surge in outbreaks among mammals reveals an alarming trend. Since 2022, ten countries across three continents have reported deadly outbreaks caused by influenza A(H5) viruses, including A(H5N1), in mammals. It is likely that more countries have experienced outbreaks that have yet to be detected or reported. Both land and sea mammals have been affected, with outbreaks observed in farmed mink in Spain, seals in the United States of America, and sea lions in Peru and Chile. At least 26 species have been known to be affected. Additionally, H5N1 viruses have been detected in domestic animals such as cats and dogs in several countries, with recent announcements of H5N1 detections in cats made by Polish authorities.

Dr. Gregorio Torres, Head of the Science Department at WOAH, warns of a recent shift in the ecology and epidemiology of avian influenza, heightening global concern as the disease expands to new geographical regions, triggers unusual wild bird die-offs, and causes an alarming rise in mammalian cases.

Assessing the risk to humans, sporadic cases of influenza A(H5N1) clade 2.3.4.4b virus infections have been reported but remain exceptionally rare, with only eight cases reported since December 2021. Human infections can result in severe illness with high mortality rates. The detected human cases have predominantly been linked to close contact with infected birds and contaminated environments.

Dr. Sylvie Briand, Director of Epidemic and Pandemic Preparedness and Prevention at WHO, states that based on the available information, the virus does not currently appear to transmit easily from person to person. However, she emphasizes the need for vigilance in identifying any changes in the virus that could alter its transmissibility. WHO, in collaboration with FAO and WOAH, is actively monitoring the virus’s evolution and calling on countries to enhance their monitoring capabilities, particularly in regions with limited experience in avian flu surveillance.

Ongoing studies aim to identify any genetic changes in the virus that might facilitate its spread among mammals, including humans.

Keith Sumption, Chief Veterinary Officer at FAO, highlights the rapidly evolving epidemiology of H5N1 and emphasizes the need for vigilance, timely sharing of genetic sequences, and monitoring of the virus’s molecular epidemiology for effective risk assessment and disease control.

To curb the spread of avian influenza, the tripartite partners—FAO, WHO, and WOAH—urge countries to undertake the following actions:

  • Implement enhanced biosecurity measures and good hygiene practices in farms and poultry value chains to prevent avian influenza at its source.
  • Rapidly detect, report, and respond to animal outbreaks as the first line of defense, implementing control strategies outlined in WOAH standards.
  • Strengthen influenza surveillance in animals and humans, with a focus on risk-based surveillance in animals during high-risk periods. Animal cases of avian influenza should be reported promptly to WOAH. Genetic sequencing should be conducted periodically to detect any changes in existing viruses or the introduction of new ones. In humans, surveillance for severe acute respiratory infections and influenza-like illnesses should be prioritized, alongside careful examination of any unusual epidemiological patterns. Human infections should be reported under the International Health Regulations, and influenza viruses should be shared with WHO Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS) Collaborating Centres for Reference and Research on Influenza.
  • Conduct epidemiological and virological investigations surrounding animal outbreaks and human infections, enhancing surveillance to rapidly detect and investigate suspected cases.
  • Rapidly share genetic sequence data of viruses from humans, animals, or their environments in publicly accessible databases, even before peer-reviewed publication.
  • Promote collaboration between the animal and human health sectors, particularly in information sharing, joint risk assessment, and response.
  • Communicate the risk effectively, providing alertness and training to healthcare workers and occupationally-exposed individuals on protective measures. The general public and animal workers should be advised to avoid contact with sick and dead animals and report such incidents to animal health authorities. If unwell, individuals should seek medical care and report any animal exposures to their healthcare providers.
  • Ensure influenza pandemic preparedness at all levels.

FAO, WHO, and WOAH have convened experts to review the situation, monitor the rapidly evolving virus, and update recommendations for controlling its spread. They continue to work with countries on preparedness and response, fostering collaboration across nations and sectors. The global spread of the virus underscores the critical need for global cooperation and vigilance in protecting animals, people, and economies.

“The eDL is a valid, secure, and an alternative form of authorization for persons operating motor vehicles. We are launching this as part of the agency’s digitalization. The eDL will also ensure efficiency in our service,” ayon kay Villacorta.

“Apprehended motorists who must present the eDL only by accessing their LTMS portal account, while those who fail or refuse to present their eDL will be considered a violation of failure to carry a driver’s license,” ayon pa rin kay Villacorta.

Historic Anchor Brewing Co. is closing after 127 years, with beer sales in decline

0

SAN FRANCISCO. San Francisco’s 127-year-old Anchor Brewing Co. will shut down and liquidate after years of declining sales, citing tough economic conditions.

Anchor was a trailblazer in the U.S., brewing craft beers in the 1970s when most Americans were loyal to a handful of major brands. Its unique brewing techniques ignited demand beyond the city borders of San Francisco, and it quickly became a sought-after prize by beer geeks everywhere.

In recent years, however, brewers have faced increasing difficulty turning a profit with a proliferation of canned cocktails, crafted drinks, spirits and wines dinging beer sales. Lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic pressured brewers further.

Last year, overall beer sales volume slid 3.1% in the U.S., according to the Brewers Association. Craft brewer sales volume ticked 0.1% higher during the period, but imports are rising.

“We recognize the importance and historic significance of Anchor to San Francisco and to the craft brewing industry, but the impacts of the pandemic, inflation, especially in San Francisco, and a highly competitive market left the company with no option but to make this sad decision to cease operations,” brewery spokesperson Sam Singer said in a written statement Wednesday.

Anchor Brewing had teetered near insolvency before and in the 1960s it was acquired by a Stanford University grad, Fritz Maytag. Maytag implemented new brewing practices such as dry hopping, and began bottling the beer in 1971, according to the brewer.

By the mid-1970s, Anchor Brewing had assembled a solid portfolio of respected brews — including Anchor Porter, Liberty Ale, Old Foghorn Barleywine Ale and its first annual Christmas Ale, which became a holiday tradition in locales far from San Francisco.

Jeff Alworth, author of The Beer Bible, said in a blog post Wednesday that Maytag “sparked a revival in small-scale brewing” that would transform the industry and give the emerging craft brewing industry its ethos and attitude.

“He had this approach to beer, which was, ‘We’re going to use traditional ingredients and we’re going to use traditional methods and we’re going to be defiant as we do it and we’re going to be hyper-local,’” Alworth said. “It served as a blueprint.”

Anchor Brewing was sold to the Japanese brewer Sapporo in 2017 and it’s decided to discontinue the brand.

Anchor said that it made repeated efforts over the past year to find buyers for the brewery and its brands, but that it was unable to find one. It is still possible that a buyer will come forward as part of the liquidation process, the company said.

“Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever, but I still have hope that they can get rescued by somebody,” said Ana Echenique, who was first introduced to Anchor Steam beer when she moved to San Francisco in 2011. Enchenique became such a fan that she would buy it whenever she saw it in stores in other cities.

The news of the brewery closing came as a shock to San Francisco native Frances Baxter, who said Anchor Steam beer is classic San Francisco just like sourdough bread.

“It’s just really sad because it’s over 100 years of history and it’s something so uniquely San Francisco,” Baxter said. “We lost so many sourdough bakeries … it’s a shame to lose this, too, because I’m not sure anyone is going to save it now.”

Baxter went to Anchor on Wednesday to buy Christmas Ale for a brother who lives in Pennsylvania, but the brewery was closed for the day. She said another brother would try to buy the beer for him Thursday because she will be working.

“A lot of these companies just buy something and dispose of it, and that’s apparently what Sapporo is doing. It’s just a shame,” Baxter said.

Anchor recently announced that it would limit sales of its beers to California and that it would cut production of its Anchor Christmas Ale in an effort to cut costs.

The company has stopped brewing and will continue packaging and distributing the beer on hand while available through around the end of the month.

The brewer is giving employees a 60-day notice and plans to provide transition support and separation packages.

“Anchor has invested great passion and significant resources into the company,” Singer said. “Unfortunately, today’s economic pressures have made the business no longer sustainable, and we had to make the heartbreaking decision to cease operations.”

Anchor Public Taps will remain open to sell what inventory remains, including a small batch of 2023 Anchor Christmas Ale.

The batch was brewed prior to the company’s decision to cancel the nationwide release.

Giant panda gives birth to squirming, squealing healthy twin girls at South Korean theme park

0

SEOUL, South Korea. A giant panda has given birth to squirming, squealing healthy twin girls at a South Korean theme park.

Ai Bao gave birth to her cubs last Friday at the Everland theme park near Seoul, the park’s operator said Tuesday.

It released video of the birth and the mother caring for her newborns, as well as veterinarians examining the tiny cubs.

They are the first panda twins born in South Korea, Samsung C&T Resort Group said.

Both Ai Bao and her newborns are in good health, the resort group said in the statement.

Decades of conservation efforts in the wild and study in captivity saved the panda species native to China from extinction, increasing its population from fewer than 1,000 at one time to more than 1,800 in the wild and captivity. The life expectancy of a giant panda in the wild is about 15 years, but in captivity they have lived to be as old as 38.

The South Korean resort group said it will observe the cubs’ health and growth to determine when to unveil them to the public. Meanwhile, the group said it will use social media to show off the cubs.

Ai Bao and a male panda, Le Bao, came to the park in 2016 from China on a 15-year lease. In 2020, Ai Bao gave birth to a female cub named Fu Bao.

Ai Bao, Le Bao and Fu Bao had been the only pandas in South Korea. Everland’s Panda World, which houses the three pandas, has received 14 million visitors, according to the resort group.
