Sa kanyang sponsorship speech sa Senate Resolution No. 230, sinabi ni Marcos na “the prestigious George Cross Award from Her Majesty, the late Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness the then Prince Charles, was given to Parsons for her courage, compassion, dedication, and bravery in the face of grave and mortal danger. It is yet another highlight in the extraordinary history of Filipino nursing and May today stands proudly in the llocano tradition of her mother Zenaida and Philippine Nursing’s founder Anastacia Geron Tupas from 1922,” ayon sa kanyang talumpati.

Like her peers in the health sector, her commitment to saving lives, delivering the best care possible, and creating a better and healthier future is truly commendable and worth these recognitions,” ayon kay Poe sa kanyang talumpati.

Our nurses can only do these heroic sacrifices to the extent that they are taken care of. We need to resuscitate our nursing profession,” ayon kay Poe.

“We should give back not just in terms of recognition but also in terms of actual benefits to make the nursing practice a genuine livable career for practitioners. Upgrading the minimum salary of nurses is the least that we can do for the sacrifice they gave in nursing us all back to health,” ayon sa kanya.

Nagtatrabaho siya ngayon sa University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire at kasalukuyang isang Modern Matron for Respiratory Services. (PNA)

DepEd: Christmas party contribution, mga regalo ‘strictly voluntary’

0

“All Christmas parties, themes, costumes, decoration, and exchange gifts are voluntary. No learner or DepEd personnel should be forced to contribute, participate, or use their money for the celebration,” ayon kay Duterte, na siya ring concurrent Education secretary.

“Celebrations in schools and in DepEd offices, as far as practicable, should be simple yet meaningful. Christmas party themes should not result in expenses that will become a burden on parents, students, and DepEd personnel,” ayon dito.

“No learner shall be excluded from joining the Christmas celebration by reason of their failure to give the voluntary contribution or absence of a prepared gift,” ayon dito.

“DepEd personnel should be reminded that solicitations, whether in cash or in kind, are not allowed for Christmas parties or holiday celebrations,” dagdag pa nito. (PNA)

Has Christmas become less exciting?

In a few days from now, the entire Christendom shall be celebrating what Christians believed to be the birth of Jesus Christ. In the olden days, it is the time for family gatherings where every member of the family is expected to be present not only to exchange gifts and pleasantries with relatives but also to partake of the sumptuous food specially prepared for the season – ham, cakes, chocolate candies, assorted fruits and homemade beverages.  Today all these foods are available 24/7 anywhere making the season less exciting as far as the millennials and the Z generation are concerned.

Could it be one of the reasons why some bullheaded kids choose to spend time with their peers on the street up to the wee hour of the night?  Or could it be the lack of proper guidance because the parents/guardians are working to augment the needs of the family? Or could it be due to some other factors like peer influence? I am asking this in the spate of accidents involving motorcycle races in some barangays right under the noses of barangay residents.  It seems that some of the people have developed an uncaring attitude, apparently enjoying the rush of adrenalin in their veins while watching the deadly race.

Just lately, I think that was Wednesday night of November 24, 2022 when I saw on FB the motorcycle race at Barangay Concepcion, San Pablo City where a group of onlookers standing on the side of the road were raucously shouting in hysterics at the start of the race.  Soon as the two motorcycles passed in front of them like a bolt of lightning, there was a heavy crash and soon thereafter the gruesome photo of a man being carried in a stretcher followed. With what I saw, smashed and bloody face, I don’t think he will survive the crash.

Imagine the pain and emotional trauma of the family members who lost a loved one in a useless race at this time of the year. This could be avoided if there are concerned citizens who would inform the authorities about any upcoming motorcycle race or any race for that matter among teenagers and young adults. Unfortunately, the people at large seem to have grown callous to what’s happening around them.  They apparently appear to care only for themselves and their kinfolks which reminds me of the old saying “Sungay mo, sunong mo, buntot mo,hila mo” which is totally opposed to the Christian teaching “Love thy neighbor.”

Perhaps, aside from incorporating Good Manners and Right Conduct (GMRC) to the school curriculum, moral values formation must likewise be included to start from kindergarten to junior high school. There must also be spiritual revival among the people in the community without reference to any particular religion.  Materialism and greed must never be a substitute for love and kindness.  Just remember always that Christ was born in a manger wrapped in swaddling clothes and he lived his life on earth without any luxurious raiment to define Him as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.  Make Him the center of Christmas celebration and not some deadly race.

Grade inflation: Killing with kindness?

0

In a lot of team sports, coaches tend to scold players who look at the scoreboard. In families, sibling rivalries are avoided because they abide by gentle, parental advice to “mind your own business.” Do students these days find school fun without looking at their grades?

The fun in learning is important as students keep returning to — rather than cutting — classes for more. But more and more college students are becoming Churchills, thinking: “Personally, I’m always ready to learn, although I do not always like being taught.” Plus a few more Franklins, saying: “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.”

Welcome to the world of grade inflation. The higher the grades, the more enthusiastic the learners become (which is wrong on so many levels).

Unfortunately, the British statesman and the United States founding father would surely distance themselves from high grades-rewarded students. Learning was the two influential leaders’ own reward and they just wanted to immediately make an impact on society. With today’s atmosphere of inflation of grades and honors, the young leaders, the student leaders, and their student bodies are being held back by yet another social vulnerability and peer difficulties.

Rather than eyeing the desired behavior, students’ concentration is nearly on getting high grades, loving them as rewards. Grades have become an extrinsic motivator. We were alarmed of the phenomenon of grade inflation 20 years ago, and it was so wild we almost considered ourselves helpless. Likened to the growth of municipalities that are eventually being converted as cities, what the local leaders tend to forget is the growing number of street children while trumpeting accomplishments in governance.

We need to help change the mindset of our students vis-à-vis the intrinsic and extrinsic motivations. Parents and professors may help them get deeply involved in their subject/course endeavors and let them enjoy challenges, including but not limited to, punishing their mediocrity through giving them low grades. There are many ways and we may essentially embrace the phenomenon of grade inflation, but how about changing the systems in grading the students, the tenured and non-tenured professors? (We may tackle that in the future in this column.)

What is crucial at this point is to institute reforms in education so that inequality will not be felt much by vulnerable students. Grades do not matter to them, but we may listen to their noble suggestion, one of which is to let others earn their grades the hard way.

0

Itatayo na ang isang dalawang palapag na gusali ng University of Philippines (UP) sa New Clark City sa Capas, Tarlac.

Pinangunahan ni UP president Danilo Concepcion, kasama si Bases Conversion and Development Authority Chairperson Delfin Lorenzana at Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Assistant Regional Director Denise Maria Ayag ang groundbreaking ceremony para sa pagtatayo ng UP New Clark City satellite campus.

“This is a solid affirmation of the indispensability of education in empowering the lives of the people,” ayon kay Lorenzana sa isang statement.
